LAURYN HILL video interview & FREE SHOW TONIGHT

The free Lauryn Hill show in Brooklyn is tonight (aug 6, 2007). Here's a picture of Ms. Hill (and her interesting new look) from a show she played ten days ago....

Lauryn Hill

People keep saying Lauryn Hill is completely crazy, and sure the make up applied in this video isn't necessarily helping, and talking about being a 'citizen' again can maybe raise some eyebrows, but most things she says in this interview for Dutch television actually make a lot of sense. She speaks on the Fugees, what she has been through to get here, new music, a new album, and more. [Wes]

I love Lauryn Hill and have been looking forward to this show since it was first announced. We got there at 7:30 and waited on a line which probably extended eight barracaded blocks. The line moved at a slow but steady rate and the cops told us that people were still being let in.

Then, as we were maybe 40 people from the entrance the cops delcared that wingate was filled past capacity and no one else would be let in. There must have been a thousand people still waiting to get in--according to one cop, wingate has a capacity of "16-18 THOUSNAD" people. People were going nuts, scrambling from entrance to entrance trying to find a way in but everything was barracaded off. There was a vacant lot with a sign (appropriatley enough it said, "vacant lot for rent") and a bunch of people hopped over the gate to try to get a better view, but the cops escorted the people out.

all of the surrounding blocks were totally blocked off. we, like many people, wandered from entrance to entrance trying to find a way in to no avail. the surrounding parks were empty, and as with the 77 drummers thing, there were people who left early but no one else was allowed in to "replace" them. people stood in the street and on the sidewalk so they could at least hear, if not see, the show, but the cops yelled at everyone to move. "Evacuate the area at once!" "you are not allowed to be here!" "no one else is getting in!"

i've been going to these free brooklyn concerts since marty markowitz first introduced them in like, 2000 or so. this is the first time i've been turned away. i mean, PRINCE showed up at one of the asser levy park shows last year and they didnt close it off. i am so dissapointed

Posted by sad lauryn hill fan | August 6, 2007 10:43 PM

so did she ever show up?!

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2007 1:23 AM

Well im truly sorry for 10:43pm and the thousands of others who didnt get in cause you missed a truly remarkable and special show. Maybe one of the best shows i have seen not only this year but in a long time. Id say to the above poster, serves you right for not getting there early like every single newscast and blog warned people but I got there later than i wanted to as well. When i got there at 7 i knew standing on the line would not get me in so i went to the vip table, bulshitted with them using my sure fire secret way that always works(of course im not gonna tell any of you) and i got into the vip area. What started out was ridiculous as the show was supposed to start at 7:30 and Sean Kingston did not come on till 8:30. Then when he ended at 9, Marty "windbag" Markowitz told us Lauryn was not even here yet and then a lecture on how artists are basically unpredictable and crazy as if this excuses unprofessional behavoir. But whoa once she started it made everything ok. She played for over 2 hours. Went on at 9:50 and got off stage around 12:20a. Simply amazing. Forget MTV Unplugged and her reclusiveness over the years cause this woman is awesome. What a command of the stage. Like a female Sly Stone with a crack band behind her she rocked it. She played everything. Old songs, fugee songs, covers(an amazing cover of Marley's Iron Lion Zion and new stuff which sounds so sweet. God, i hope someone recorded it. A show to remember for a long time.

Oh and just to correct the sad lauryn hill fan poster. Yes Prince showed up last year but he was never announced. It was a Maceo Parker show. I can assure you that if it was a Prince show outright, you would have probably had to get there around 8 hours early to even have a shot at getting in.

anyone know if they ever let anymore people in? (and no i dont mean people who want to show off that they can bullshit their way into VIP section) i mean, i was waiting around in line till almost 9:30 and people where coming out but they didnt let anyone in. i asked both the security and the NYPD if eventually they'd let some people in and they both assured me that wasnt going to be the case..

what a miserable experience! i don't care how talented mizzz lauryn hill is, she needs to learn to have more respect and appreciation for her fans.

Reminds me of the time they had a hip-hop show on Fourth of July at Summerstage about 7-10 years ago (don't remember exactly). It was all day affair which reached capacity early on. Of course, since the concert was so long, many people left early instead a watching the whole thing. Security did not let anyone else in. Toward the end, summerstage was almost empty and the performers had an empty ventue to perform to. KRS-One (I believe) was saying on stage "can you please let more people in?". Hundreds (easily a thousand) were listening outside, but no one could get in.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2007 8:34 AM

we should all boycott that stank ho

FIrst of all it was not showing off but rather just stating facts. Second of all, the only misery going on here is you having the nerve to grouse about not getting in cause you did not get there early enough. Furthermore, blaming Lauryn Hill for that is pretty lame. It was a free show but you were not guaranteed anything. You do not have an ultimate right to be in there and cmon you know the deal. Sometimes they will do a one in one out policy when its at capacity and sometimes they wont. It certainly was not up to Lauryn. It was security and police. If you read the rolling stone link you see security even gave her brother a hard time about getting in. Next time get there super early for shows like this if you want to make sure you get in and take your anger out on the right people.

As for the Rolling Stone link, I could not disagree with that reviewer more. She was apparently at a completely diff show plus she shows a real lack of musical knowledge. But thats Rolling Stone for ya.

I guess everyone has there opinion. For me and the thousands of people who stayed around for the whole performance it was a truly amazing show. She definately delivered. Lauryns back! No shes not the same one you remember but like most real artist shes changed. I don't like artist who perform songs the exact same live as on cd anyway so for me it was a beautiful thing. An hour into it she start performing versions closer to the original so fans could lose their minds and sing along. She knows she still needs to give fans something familiar until enough new material is out there to absorb.

Her band was on point! She gave the crowd alittle bit of hip hop, reggae, afrobeat, and rock. Never too much of one or not enough of the other. I and many others will remember this show for life. I've seen her and the fugees MANY times all over the world. From Miami to Europe and this show was better than ANY previous solo performance or group performance.

I'm sorry Lauryn's life took a turn and she had to deal with alot of things that kept her away for so long but in the end her music, her creativity, her talent, and her passion will put her in the place she deserves to be. Miss Hill is legendary and God willing Lauryn will be a legend in the same veins as her childrens grandfather. She reminded me of a Nina Simone, James Brown, and Bob Marley wrapped into one on stage last night.

THANK U LAURYN for putting on such an amazing show for all your fans. Most of us appreciated it. The few who didn't let them keep hating.

You really can't fault the promoters for this one. The venue is huuuuge. It's a track and football field. If the capacity was three or more times Irving Plaza, I wouldn't be shocked.

Secondly, it's a REAL neighborhood, plopped in between some narrow streets off the main avenue, and it also happens to be a largely Carribean area.... so when Marty Markowitz and Co. bring in West Indian acts, or a Lauryn Hill, you can better believe it's going to be bonkers. You have entire families lining up with their dinner, folding chairs the works. Either you appreciate that as part of the fun or you shouldn't be bothering. These type of acts do not come to these types of areas normally. With all the blogs these aren't community shows anymore. Previously, these shows would rarely get much exposure...even NYPress would forget to list them some seasons. It's not just a free show either, it's a free show with video screens, a real stage, decent sound, and hand made signs advertising fried fish for sale.

There are some good views from the streets normally... it's shitty people couldn't get into this one, but unlike the Boredoms show, there was no RSVP, nobody could really guess how many would show up, and it was really first come first serve. The issue with the Police may also be due to the fact that only Muslim security typically work inside the venues...while the Police stand outside trying to stay calm.

I cannot believe some of the idiotic comments posted by some journalists on the overall review of Lauryn‘s concerts. It is so amazing how soon we forget, I mean 9 years ago every article was so positive about Lauryn I mean journalists would call her all sorts of high-quality names that she is naturally beautiful, has charisma, intelligent, the most versatile artist of her generation, inspirational, you know what I mean. She disappears from the limelight to become a mother, fans beg her to comeback, suddenly when she decides to come back we call her crazy and all sorts of derogatory names. I am still trying to find out what is all this hate on Lauryn.

To top it all I am really surprised by some people claiming that she is racist when we all know that this was a malicious rumour which was unfounded. I just realise everyday that Americans are ignorant and stupid, I have never seen anywhere in any country where an artist with a political substance and with what Lauryn represents gets disregarded it is shocking. Americans are so caught up in a material world and they are forever supporting artists that worship vanity. I mean the fact that an artist like Rihanna can top the Billboard charts it says a lot about the weaknesses of the music industry in general. Lauryn’s concerns about the current state of hip hop are so true and most people feel the same even Oprah had a forum on this issue and we all know that the current state of hip hop and RnB is horrendous; too much commercialisation which is really out order, women’s portrayal of sex gimmick images, non-sensical lyrical content, I mean male hip hop artists are such a disgrace to the black communities the female RnB stars have truly lost their identities, it is really sad to see these things happening. I mean most of the things Lauryn talked about in her recent interview make a lot of sense; people must not confuse her intelligence with craziness. I am still trying to figure out why people are so concerned about her outfits do they want her to dress like Beyonce? I really need answers on this one.

http://www.commondreams.org/headlines03/1214-07.htm

Lets not forget Lauryn the deep words she spoke at the vatican concert.

""I did not come here to celebrate the birth of Christ with you but to ask you why you are not in mourning for his death inside this place," ...""God has been a witness to the corruption of his leadership, of the exploitation and abuses ... by the clergy,"...
"Hill told the crowd to seek blessings "from God not men" and said she did "not believe in representatives of God on earth."

Hill, 28, did not sing the song listed on the program but instead sang a song about social injustice.

Of course her part did NOT air (no surprise) but glad Lauryn was in a place where she did not fear expressing herself at any cost and shes still in that place. Its who she is she can't create music her fans are comfortable with shes doing her. Hate it or love it. I love it.

Wow, Anon@2:06am had the balls to scold someone for not showing up early enough to be let in... but then went on to talk about how he/she got there later than they wanted to, swindled their way into the VIP secion, then gloated about how awesomefantasmagorical the show was.

You, my friend, are a GIANT DOUCHEBAG.

it was hard to concentrate on her musical abilities when she's dressed like Homie the Clown from In Living Color

Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2007 3:45 PM

it's really hard to hear all of these comments on her appearance. Just becasue she's not hinting at tits and ass ala beyonce/ciara/kelly/rihanna doesnt mean shes crazy. I read somewhere that one of teh things that led to her pushing away from music was the fact that everyone and thier momma was copping her style. She felt her style became commodified and felt disgusted by it. i think she's dressing like this because she doesnt want anyone to cop this style. And so far so good. It's not about the appaearance its about the music. that house of dereon made in chian shit the knowles are hawking with beyonces big texas hair is pretty ugly, but6 not too many people are saying anything about her because shes still hinting at tits and ass in her appearance, and all of her music is about getting a man, losing a man, leaving a man. While lauryn is talking about some serious real shit folks. don't sleep.

also i heard that lauryn is pregnant again. which may be why shes trying to cover up .

it seems we only love Lauryn when she is massed produced.
she is a thinking breathing being, to be pushed and pulled around in all direction for the sake of a buck would change anyone.

Lauryn's not crazy, her style may be unusual but at least it's unique and it's lauryn. when lauryn tries to find herself and get her own piece of mind, we condemn her.
anyway, her style isnt that far fetched, it resembles a mix between bohemian and 70s glam rock.

the only crazy one is Wyclef, he's lashing out and badmouthing Lauryn because he can no longer control her and take advantage of her talent. he was probably banking on the Fugees getting back together, but lauryn is no longer his prize to be banked on.

i loved lauryn and i still love lauryn, she's doing what she needs to do, because her experience from miseducation has obviously jaded her. she doesnt deserve the ridicule placed on her. she is an amazing artist and her music still gives me chills!
