My Bloody Valentine

Is the long wait finally over? My Bloody Valentine, the legendary sonic sculptors of feedback and tremelo who helped define the shoegaze movement only to disband after releasing just two full length albums, is set to make its first live appearance in more than a decade at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, CA in April, 2008. According to sources in the United States and the United Kingdom who are familiar with the negotiations, the band is close to signing a deal that will see a reunited My Bloody Valentine headline Coachella, scheduled for April 25–27, before embarking on a world tour sometime later in 2008. [The Daily Swarm]
Hopefully they'll also play two shows at Webster Hall (or somewhere).

Why would people want to see My Bloody Valentine? They never were that great live. I saw them twice during their heyday, once in NYC and once in London, and while the London show was somewhat good, the NYC show stunk.

Once again: why would people want to see My Bloody Valentine?

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2007 11:15 AM

Pulp will not reunite, Jarvis hasn't evne played any of their material

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2007 11:21 AM

@11:15

i saw them too (those same two shows actually) and like i didnt want to go, i had some dishes and laundry to do, but my friend was like 'come on dude, its MBV why wouldnt you want to see them?" and i was fine whatever, but i dont really want to. the nyc show did stink. i hate those guys. ugh....i just wish people would like have the same opinion as me all the fucking time.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2007 11:27 AM

Anyone who disagrees with my taste in music is an idiot.

Posted by Hipster | August 27, 2007 11:36 AM

Loveless is to MBV as Psychocandy is to JMC. Great albums. Although I prefer Slowdive in terms of shoegaze for that period. For those who haven’t seen MBV in the past, we now might have a chance to see them in the future. I saw JMC on their reunion in NYC and thought it was great. I look forward not to Coachella but to their post-Coachella tour.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2007 11:44 AM

MBV are a joke

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2007 11:50 AM

"Hm. Interesting...MBV reunion, nice nice. Could be worth it to take some pills and see. Let's check the comments...Oh, wait. Anonymous 11:15 saw them back in their HeyDay and they stunk! Why would I want to see them indeed. Why bother to see one of my favorite bands for myself. Oh, I would have thought they were awesome. Oh well, I guess they sucked. Forget it. I guess I'm not cool after all"

Well, 11:15 and whoever, maybe the show didn't stink maybe you stink. Maybe you weren't high on anything? 'cuz I'd imagine you'd want to? All that noise is just noise unless yr high, or autistic. Maybe because I never got the chance to see them in their heyday (which was when again? I don't remember when they were in our faces as much as Peter Bjorn and John, much less The Killers or that shit).

Posted by slim | August 27, 2007 11:57 AM

well why dont we throw in fucking Oasis in there while we're at it?

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2007 12:13 PM

Pass. Loveless is good and all, but they would probably suck live

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2007 12:15 PM

with the gorillaz broken up, blur will definitely headline sunday

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2007 12:16 PM

I would LOVE to see the 1985 Kansas City Royals reunite.

Posted by will | August 27, 2007 12:37 PM

My predictions/hopes for next year:

Friday - White Stripes and My Bloody Valentine
Saturday - Radiohead and Portishead
Sunday - David Bowie and Pulp

I know Jarvis is playing around with other things still, but he's still tight with the other bandmates, so I think it could happen. Possibly just as a one-off for the benefit of Americans that have been completely deprived of Pulp (no shows in California since 1996 and none in America since a meager 5 date east coast tour in 1998). Come on Paul Tollett, bribe/blackmail/beg, do whatever you gotta do to make it happen!

1. Considering that it's been well over a decade since they've actually performed, maybe they'll rise to the occasion. I'll probably skip Coachella, but if word-of-mouth is good when they hit New York, I'm totally there.

2. Loveless is good, but I like Isn't Anything just as much!

3. Anon 11:50, consider your cheap iconoclasm noted.

i run coachella...here's the confirmed 2008 headliners

friday - jesse & the rippers reunion
saturday - r kelly (performing 'trapped in the closet' chapters 1-67)
sunday - mozart

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2007 1:21 PM

I actually have an advance copy of the Jesse & The Rippers setlist:

1. Forever (Beach Boys Cover)
2. Devil In A Blue Dress

Encore:
1. Forever (reprise)

Posted by Camp Tiger Claw | August 27, 2007 1:31 PM

personally I wouldn't mind a California Dreams reunion for Coachella..Kelly Packard has held up quite nicely the past 10 years!

for it being some of the most promising music news i've read in a very long time, this is the most pathetic comments thread i've ever come across.

while his output since mbv has been minimal at best, what little kevin shields has put his hands to in recent years has all been spectacular and way ahead of its time (primal scream's xtrmntr, remixes for mogwai and yo la tengo amongst others).

while the couple folks on here feel the need to trash their live show (even though they were obviously not fans to begin with, and with a band like that you either get it or you don't), to pretty much anyone else that was really into this band and did get to see them, their shows were legendary. the live stuff i have from them is incredible, not to mention the story i heard of a man whose ears actually bled from one of their shows, and he still stayed through the whole set.

that said, i've also heard that at most of their shows a large part of the audience did usually walk out. again, you either get it or you don't. but my bloody valentine still makes more sense to me than all the 17 yr old kids buying black dice records.

i definitely could see mbv still being able to put on a hell of a live show. i just pray kevin shields eases up on the bong enough to start answering his phone when colm comes calling.

Posted by bd | August 27, 2007 1:36 PM

Anyone remember that Full House episode where Jesse & The Rippers did that horrible cover of The Who's My Generation with Danny Tanner on guest vocals?

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2007 1:40 PM

All things being equal, I'd much rather see a Ride reunion then MBV..But with new Oasis and Jesus and Mary Chain recordings in the works, the possibility of one is doubtful at best.

Kevin Shields to produce new Jesse Camp & the 8th Street Kidz record

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2007 2:51 PM

you guys, not a joke, I am in LOVE with john stamos' cover of "forever". Sometimes I sing it in the shower!!!

Posted by pretty girl | August 27, 2007 2:56 PM

I still have nightmares about when Jesse signed to Fat Fish records and tried to go solo. Do The Jessman? Please.

Also, who could forget his misguided attempt at becoming 'The Vulture?'

Coachella is going to be so awesome with J&TR. I'm more excited than the first time I visited The Smash Club.

Another "pathetic" comment here:

I've heard most of Kevin Shields post-MBV stuff and entertaining? Yes. Good? Yes. Quality? Yes, but ahead of its time? Ah, no. Its just an extension of MBV, like if they would've continued, that's what Kevin's songs would've sounded like. Kevin has also said that he doesn't like performing live because the music doesn't translate well in an open space environment. Look it up on YouTube.

Bless your heart sister for admitting that.

Posted by b.LOUD | August 27, 2007 3:14 PM

Any simpleton who would argue that Primal Scream's "XTMRNTR" isn't still ahead of its time is indeed pathetic. And that album never would have happened without Kevin Shields.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2007 3:47 PM

Isn't Forever a Kiss song? No matter what reunion this was, someone would bitch about it and say they suck.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2007 4:23 PM

YES!

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2007 4:27 PM

i am crying in anticipation.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2007 4:53 PM

Yes, yes, yes..., I saw MBV on the tour with Dinosaur Jr.(w/o Lou and Murph) and Babes in Toyland. I had low expectations, but they completely blew me away. They blew Dinosaur off of the stage. I wanted to leave after MBV, and should have. I love MBV live. I cannot wait.

Don't rely on line-up rumors for Coachella, esp this far in advance. People were expecting the Police this past year, with the news in January of their reunion and the pre-sale password being "Roxanne" that took place at almost the same time, but were pretty disappointed not to see them on the line-up.

Although I would agree with the statement that you should not rely on any rumors this far in advance, I'm not sure about the comment about "people" being disappointed when the Police weren't on the lineup. The concert was sold out in something like 3 weeks (which was unheard of based on previous years). Couldn't have been too disappointed...

Posted by CN | August 27, 2007 6:19 PM

even if they play coachella, will you be able to see them? i mean can you even say you saw them if it was from 5,000 feet away when you could barely hear it and were watching it on the video screen anyway? plus won't be there something equally as rad going on the 2nd stage at the same time? don't forget the heat, the parking 14 miles away and the insane traffic. im glad if MBV does reunite, they plan to play some other shows.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2007 7:44 PM

i hear the smiths are playing saturday for $75 million

Coachella 2008 bands (headliners/sub-headliners)
1) Radiohead
2) My Bloody Valentine
3) Portishead
4) No Doubt
5) The Cure
6) Bright Eyes

You heard it first.....

Posted by true love waits! | August 27, 2007 9:54 PM

the hell with this: loveless is the second most overrated album of the '90s.

Posted by jakob | August 28, 2007 3:08 AM

Two words why this won't happen:

Cocteau Twins

Posted by Joseph | August 28, 2007 8:56 AM

I went Coachella in 04 and 6:19 has it exactly right. Some really good bands there and I was standing 5000 feet away from the stage looking at some projection screens. I might as well have been at home watching a DVD of the bands. I will say, that if you like a lot of the smaller bands, its worth it. The bands in the tents are really the only way to go.. I doubt MBV will be playing a tent. :-) But seriously, MBV don't have enough material to get too excited about a reunion.

Posted by Mike | August 28, 2007 11:15 AM

hmmm blur..mbv...verve........all there in some way shape or form.......

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2007 1:48 PM

skinny puppy and bauhaus are not big enought to headline coachella. ill put money on pj harvey and rediohead being there though and maybe nin if they do release the scond edition of year zero next year.

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2007 3:35 PM

Friday- California Dreams
Saturday- Jesse and the Rippers
Sunday- Zack Attack!!!

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2007 4:00 PM

CN: The sell-out was mainly due to RATM though -- that took everyone by surprise. I never said it was very many people [http://www.coachella.com/forum/showthread.php?t=304], but enough for many pre-sale purchasers to know not to trust rumors. ;)

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2007 4:38 PM

My Bloody Valentine will probably play the same time as Radiohead

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2007 4:49 PM

As much as I would LOVE for this to happen more than anything else!!!!! - it's not going to. Keep dreaming....
This would be the most anticipated reunion ever.
Also, in regard to that Talking Heads post - that's even more unlikely to ever happen. Not in our life time.

Posted by Bud | September 4, 2007 2:54 PM

AHHHHH!!!! Why anyone would want to see my bloody valentine is be-ond me! hearing a few seconds on the radio the other day was enough to make my ears feel distressingly violated and appalled at the state of this music industry (do people actually waste money on that kinda sewage)

By the way,
"Kevin has also said that he doesn't like performing live because the music doesn't translate well in an open space environment" means they're not talented enough to be able to play live without it sounding awful, even their studio edited stuff sounds like sewage.

Hears the actual headliners:

Friday: Tom Waits
Saturday: Robert Wyatt
Sunday: Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band

At the end of Beefhearts set, there will be an encore, the Lord himself, Frank Zappa will grace down from the heavens for a 9 hour jam into the Sunrise on monday.

Posted by Sam | November 5, 2007 5:24 AM

I agree only halfway with Sam. Why would anyone want to see them? Because their music was magical. However their live show is not. I saw them at Slims in SF back in 1991-1992, and it was mediocre at best. I can't imagine them being better in 2008. Pass.

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2007 8:45 AM

I know I would want to see them .<y bloody valentine is FAR from being overrated. If anything, they are underrated. This band is incredible both on their albums and live. I've never seen them live personally, but I watched some VERY POOR quality videos on youtube and it was still one the most incredible things I've ever seen in my life. My dream headliners:
1. My Bloody Valentine
2. Radiohead
3. Pavement

Posted by Jessica | November 11, 2007 5:25 PM

I have seen them live, in Vancouver in I think 1991, and they were BRILLIANT. Seriously, BRILLIANT. If this really happens, (I'm sceptically optimistic) then everyone who is a fan should drop everything and make way to the california desert. Be prepared to feel like barfing because it's so loud, though.
