The 2007 Virgin Festival in Baltimore - review & pics

words & photos by Bao Nguyen

Girl Talk
Virgin Fest 2007

So this was a very last minute idea, meaning I left New York for Baltimore at 12 PM on Saturday when gates had already opened at 10 AM. Not knowing at the time whether I had a pass waiting for me at the festival, I made the 4 hour drive, hindered by the beach bound crowd on the NJ Turnpike, armed with a Polaroid, 4 hours of sleep, and a sense of regret for missing the previous night's CSS show. I arrived at Pimilico Field at exactly 4 PM and after nearly being run over by Richard Branson on a golf cart, I made it just in time to catch the start of Peter Bjorn and John's set. I think their music plays better in a small club than a large festival type atmosphere especially when the entire crowd seems to be waiting for only one particular song that everyone can whistle to. Following Peter Bjorn and John was an high energy set from LCD Soundsystem that included a very unusual mosh pit where three people were doing their best Thom Yorke seizure dance....

Virgin Fest 2007

The sun soon began to set and that signaled the mass exodus to the Main Stage to catch the Beastie Boys. While waiting for the Beastie Boys to go on, I noticed the crowd was fairly older, late 40's, early 50's. Assuming they were there waiting for the Police, I asked a woman no younger than 50 if she was excited for the Police. To my surprise, she smiled and said, "I'm actually here to see the Beastie Boys! I don't understand all the hoopla behind the Police". I suppose there is no age restriction in exercising your right to party. However, as my friend pointed out, the members of the Beastie Boys are getting quite old themselves and beginning to resemble Bob Dylan onstage. Nevertheless, the older crowd seemed to be enjoying themselves especially near the end of the set when they played old hits such as "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" and "Sure Shot". The Beastie Boys cleverly sampled KRS-One's "Sound of Da Police" in a tribute to the final act of the night.

Virgin Fest 2007

Lollapalooza had Pearl Jam, and well - many more acts, but one thing that was clearly missing from their line-up was the Police. Definitely the band I was looking forward to the most all weekend, they really showed that they knew how to rock out even if they were growing a bit senile in their age. Maybe it was no sleep or too much music, but I heard Sting greet the crowd with, "Hellllooo, Bonnaroo!". I suppose he might have said Baltimore, but to keep the interesting plotline going let's just say he said the former. Starting out with "Message in a Bottle", the set was practically a compilation of all their greatest hits, which didn't seem to disappoint the crowd. Throughout the set, the crowd remained energetic, dancing and singing along, something lacking at most indie rock shows today. Day one was over, and in 12 hours I would be back and ready for a very long Day 2.

Virgin Fest 2007

For Day 2 I magically turned my Polaroid into a SLR, so the photos from this day are of much higher quality. This depends of course on your preference to Polaroid to digital, a true marker of how "indie" you are apparently. Whereas choosing which acts to see was a fairly simple task on Day One, it was extremely difficult from the outset to plan out Day Two's schedule. As mentioned earlier, I missed CSS' show at Studio B, so it would be sacrilege to miss Lovefoxxx and company twice in one weekend, right? Well the only trouble was that Dan Deacon was playing the Dance Tent followed immediately by Girl Talk. I have never seen Dan Deacon live, and to see him play in Baltimore - his hometown, was as good as place as any to see him for the first time. I was not disappointed. Dance circle competitions, a critique on post-Armageddon cinema, beach ball envy - the set had it all.

Always a fun thing to do on a Sunday at noon is go buckwild onstage during a Girl Talk set. He decided to keep this a G-rated version of his usually raunchy sets by keeping most of his clothes on. Nonetheless, his mix of Daft Punk, the Police, Avril Lavigne, and everything in between, kept the young crowd dancing into the afternoon.

After Dan Deacon and Girl Talk, I headed over to the Main Stage for a bit of a breather and caught Regina Spektor and Spoon. It was a nice break to just sit back and listen to Regina Spektor's set, which included a cover of John Lennon's "Real Love", and then sing along to the Spoon catalog of favorites like "Small Stakes" and "I Turn My Camera On".

Being so caught up with Spoon's set, I forgot that Explosions in the Sky had started playing on the South Stage 20 minutes earlier. I hurried over to catch the last couple of songs. One of my favorite live acts, Explosions in the Sky held their own in a crowd that was eagerly awaiting Bad Brains, Wu-Tang Clan, and/or 311.

I headed back in the direction of the Main Stage to catch the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The beginning of the set was heavy on Show Your Bones but slowly transitioned back to the days of Fever to Tell. To anyone who has always wondered what "Maps" was about, well according to Karen O, it's about, "Love! Summer fucking love!". Her childhood summer crush was apparently with a boy named Rand McNally - zing. I ran back to the South Stage to catch some of Wu-Tang's set. It was beyond packed and I was left to enjoy their set from afar and mainly through the giant TV screens adjacent to the stage.

Next was more New York bred (indie?) rock with Interpol. I was pretty disappointed at their recent Bowery show, but was pleasantly surprised by their performance on Day Two of The Virgin Festival. Perhaps they ARE meant for big venues such as Madison Square Garden. My friends and I found ourselves mindlessly dancing and jumping around to a crowd who were anxiously waiting for the Smashing Pumpkins. First time I could say I've actually had fun at an Interpol show.

Most of the crowd all day seemed to be waiting for them. It seemed like every other person I saw was wearing a ZERO t-shirt. Given this, the crowd was more subdued than I expected, but then again I only stayed for four songs which included "Zero" and "Today". Without D'arcy and James Iha, it just doesn't seem like a real reunion.

I left the Pumpkins early to catch the act I had been looking forward to all weekend (after the Police). Unfortunately, there was nothing for M.I.A. to climb in the Dance Tent, but she was far from disappointing. The dance tent was full of a diverse crowd of Baltimore hipsters (don't ask me to explain what that means exactly) to European ravers left over from the earlier dance acts. I've still heard only certain tracks from "Kala" so far, but in any case, I found myself dancing until she ended her hour long set with "Galang". Naeem Juwan of Spank Rock watched from backstage, and I was hoping he would play a song with her to return the favor from last year. Alas, he stayed in the shadows watching his hometown dance to easily the best act of the entire weekend.

Anyone see Pete Yorn cover the PB&J whistle song (yes I know the name of the song) at Lollapolooza? I watched it on the computer...
'cause I'm a nerd

VFest on Saturday was quite stellar (the only day I went).

LCD, Modest Mouse, Peter Bjorn and John, Fountains of Wayne, Beastie Boys, Incubus, The Fratellis and TVOTR were all excellent (in preference order from best to not-quite-as-good-as-the-best-but-still-good). I don't like the Police or Cheap Trick, so they weren't. Amy Winehouse was boring but sounded good. Good times but probably won't shell out the money again.

dan deacon wore a new shirt! amazing. sorry to say that the sum of all virgin acts might just amount to the greatness of one daft punk song live from the robot pyramid. nice review though bao.

Regina Spektor's got a great fucking smile....and some nice tittays.

The Pumpkins never advertised themselves as a reunion and D'arcy was out of the band long before the end. I'm so tired of media types saying it isn't a reunion b/c James and D'arcy aren't in it. No one but the media said it was in the first place. But I'll let this stop bothering me soon enough...even while the bands like Wilco and Nine Inch Nails have rotating lineups...where's the backlash there? Bah...

It is beyond annoying to read reviews and all the writer can focus on is that there are members of the audience that looked old. That is beyond boring to hear.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2007 12:37 AM

i think it's the fact that the smashing pumpkins fucking suck since james and darcy left that is the real issue.

Posted by bob | August 7, 2007 12:46 AM

yes, we saw the tittays up close in person in the bathrooms. it was niiiiiiice.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2007 12:50 AM

i never noticed how big the tittays are, they totally snuck up on me

FYI: I was a senior in high school when "Fight For Your Right to Party" came out and the Beasties weren't much older than I. Now, I'm 39.

Oh, perhaps that woman "no younger than 50" was actually quite a bit younger than 50 but had done a lot of drugs.

Wish I had known you were in town! We had passes for Saturday, courtesy of Incubus, but I was more excited about Sunday (didn't get there on Sunday, cuz I wasn't trying to shell out 100 bucks). Really wanted to see Regina and the Wu! Booka Shade's set on Saturday was pretty good, and Paolo Nutini did a great job, though he came off kinda snobbish.

Did you have a parking pass, or did you have to get ripped off by the locals?

Posted by Any Given Tuesday | August 7, 2007 9:39 AM

Luckily they gave us a press parking pass so we got in and out of the Pimlico pretty easily without worrying about the gridlock of traffic.

Worth mentioning was the Velvet Revolver show on the South Stage. friggin' insane set!

The north stage was pretty much mobbed the whole time but at South, you could chill a lot easier and get up close.

on the flip side, I didn't catch the set but everyone I knew who saw the Police on Saturday said they blew the big one.

I was only there for Saturday, I thought the whole day was amazing~!!!! Got down there from NY at around 11:00 AM, and headed to the dance tent for Shout out out Out Out, which was a damn good way to start a party!
Next, we wandered around for a bit, then hit Amy Winehouse, which WAS boring, but sounded good. We left Incubus early to hit the dance tent to get some shade, and just because there was a lot more energy in there. Felix da Housecat tore it up, then Danny Tenaglia put it down something FIERCE right after. The two blended their sets quite nicely, with Danny dancing around stage towards the end of Felix's set.
We left Tenaglia a bit early for LCD, and they were tight as always. they ended the set with a KILLER Yeah (Crass Version). That song was the highlight of the day to me. I was dancing like a lunatic, so maybe I was one of the three you saw??? =0)
We went to the Beasties a bit late, and while they were good, we couldn't stay away from that damn tent!! Sacha and Digweed killed it! We saw a bit of the Police, then headed to Modest Mouse. MM took a long time to do sound check, but they soudned really good. After Float On, we needed one more dose of the dance tent, then drove back home to NY.

I'd definitely go again, well worth $125.

Everyone must have slept on all the free parking ... Yeah, the Police were terrible, they were the only band my girlfriend wanted to see out of both days(!) and after 4 songs she was ready to go. Sunday was excellent with Interpol in the rain and M.I.A. with Naeem getting hyped side stage being by far the best (except during M.I.A.'s set when she pulled some kids on stage for Bird Flu and we got crushed by a whole crowd of kinda fat, kinda butch girls rushing the stage).

>Regina Spektor's got ... some nice tittays.

i'd hit it

I was there as well. The crowd really got to me. Too many fratboys and hippies. I'm no hipster but I'll take hipsters over fratboys any day of the week. I actually really enjoyed Peter Bjorn and John. And for my money LCD Soundsystem was the act of the festival. Fucking amazing. Did not see anyone in the dance tent though. Interpol were pretty good but their set was too short.

As for the Police, I thought they were pretty good but frustrating. They changed the arrangements to so many of their songs. It is clear that they all still have the chops to make all the songs muscular and thrilling if they played them the way they sounded originally. Also Sting still has it as a vocalist, but why did he only use his falsetto sparingly? He went so low on the choruses to "Roxanne" and "Can't Stand Losing You." Why on earth would he choose not to?

Overall a fun time but I doubt I'll be going back. My tolerance for drunken neanderthals has just about run out.

Posted by Evan | August 7, 2007 7:01 PM

was there both days and saw about 15 different bands/acts. overall it was great. lcd soundsystem was definitely a highlight on saturday. "all my friends" and "yeah" were amazing.
camped out at the north stage most of sunday and was able to get surprisingly close to the stage for all of spoon, yeah yeah yeahs, interpol, and smashing pumpkins. had to wait through panic at the disco to save my spot though and they were painfully bad. i loved the guitarist almost getting pegged with a roll of toilet paper.
the crowd wasn't what i had expected. i kept thinking i was at a dave matthews / phish headlined concert. but a good weekend. i'd go back next year for a similarly diverse and fun lineup.

We where laughing at the people who paid for local parking the better one was the preferred parking scam they had going as if 200 for both days was not enough from people (I didn't pay anything near that rock on!!).

On the block we parked across from the artist entrance they had a MAKESHIFT lot with people with preferred parking things hanging from the mirror. We parked on that block maybe 25 feet away from that lot (and several local ones) both days. In front of a set of houses who wouldn't dare sell parking on the lawn.

The guard who was sitting watching the preferred lot actually would be watching ours too since it was so close.leaving was smooth no traffic leaving the lot, no idiot's who blocked us in or puked on our bumper.

2 - 2 day passes one for 100.00 on craigslist and the other 150.00 on ebay = 250.00 (last min desperation *smile*)

2 - 2 day vip bracelets from some young girl who wanted to get rid of them to a scalper but i got to her first. she didn't know she had the good ones seems daddy works fir virgin \m/ 50$

Didnt pay for parking, didnt pay for beer since they where free in the artist bar area the bracelet got me to.

GREAT TIME for more than half the price!!!!

WAs there both days. Unfortunately, due to still suffering from the day before...missed Spoon's set. But saw about 15 bands over the weekend. My favorites- the Beastie Boys, Wu Tang, the Fratellis, Ben Harper and the Pumpkins. I miss Iha and D'Arcy, but this incarnation is really good and like a bunch of the new stuff. United States is great live track.

Posted by nbflowers | August 8, 2007 9:53 AM

i was there both days. (went last year as well)
despite the crippling hot/humid temp, it was worth the drive from ohio. traffic to pimlico was much better- probably because everyone with an inch of yard space was charging for parking this year. one of THE best acts was Felix Da Housecat. his set was tight and he seemed to be having as much fun as the crowd.
sasha/digweed solid as well.
Matisyahu was spot-on with his set. he threw down some great reggae. glad i watched the whole thing. Fratellis - another highlight of the weekend - def one of my favs. although i am wondering why acts such as Wu Tang Clan had to be banished to the small south stage when clearly they draw huge crowds. Spoon (while good) shouldn't have been on the north stage. even though the drive was long, the weather too damn hot and an annoying lack of shade at the track, i can't wait to go again next year.
