Virgin Festival vs. Lollapalooza this weekend & related news

Two big U.S. music festivals are happening this weekend - both with impressive lineups, and both within a reasonable distance from NYC. The Virgin Festival in Baltimore is somewhat more reasonable, but some may think the flight to Chicago for Lollapalooza is worth the extra effort. Are you going? Which one?

I'll be at the Saturday Virgin show, LCD is what sold me on it. I would've went to Lollapalooza to catch them w/ Daft Punk, but then I'd have to take off on Friday. I'll see Daft Punk at Keyspan.... The proximity of Virgin won me over.

im going to lolla, all around it will be a better weekend. baltimore is depressing.

Lolla it is (my home turf, anyway, so it's an easy choice). I'm not going to bust my ass like I did last year, though. I kind of overdid it.
My plan of attack:

Virgin conflicts according to Productshop:
AUGUST 4TH
Shout Out Out Out (12-12:50) vs Fountains of Wayne (12-12:45)
Cheap Trick (1-1:50) vs The Fratellis (1:20- 2:10)
Amy Winehouse (2:10-3) vs Paulo Nutini (2:35 - 3:35)
LCD Soundsystem (5:30-6:30) vs Beastie Boys (6:15-7:35) vs TV on the Radio (7:15-8:15)
The Police (8:05-9:50) vs Modest Mouse (8:45-10)
AUGUST 5TH
CSS (12-12:50) vs Dan Deacon (12-12:30) vs Girl Talk (12:30-1:10)
Regina Spektor (1:10-2) vs Matisyahu (1:30-2:25)
Spoon (2:25-3:15) vs Explosion in the Sky (2:50-3:45)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs (5:15-6:15) vs Wu-Tang Clan (5:45-6:45)
Smashing Pumpkins (8:30-10) vs M.I.A. (9:10-10)
Depending on the layout of the stages LCD/TVOTR/BB and CSS/DD/GT are killers.

LOLLAPALOOZA all the way!!
Hittin up that Mets/Cubs game at Wrigley on Friday from 1-4, then hustling over to Grant Park in time to have The Rapture kick off the Friday night dance party beginning at 5pm (followed by LCD and Daft Punk). Going to be an incredible weekend.

I'll be at Lollapalooza. Managed to make it a cheaper weekend than Virgin would have been.
Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2007 2:18 PM
Hotel prices in Chicago kills the deal.
Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2007 2:24 PM
I wish I was going to one of those. I'll see CSS on Friday at Studio B at least.

Hmmmm did i not see most of these bands in much smaller places in the last couple of weeks where they were much better than at big giant outdoor shows like this. and the others im seeing upcoming in the next few weeks at smaller places. yeah thats right i have
not gonna go to either of these lame events.
im saving all that money for drinks, staying in the city and seeing the police on friday night and blonde redhead on sunday. Oh and monday laughing at you idiots who do trek to those lame o festivals and claim they were the best thing ever

Hey Anon 2:28, nothing says "cool shit" like "saving money for drinks" and "seeing the police." Rock and Roll Brah.
Don't spill any of those drinks on your girlfriend's implants.

Hotel prices aren't that terrible in Chicago - found a nice place for less than $175 a night. Just had to book early. Plus, it's worth it just for Daft Punk & Pearl Jam.
Posted by Robert | August 1, 2007 2:52 PM
hey camp tiger claw---
i reckon that's why he's not going, to save up to get her a pair of implants. or maybe to get himself a pair of calf implants, since those are all the rage in some circles.
Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2007 2:54 PM
Lolla all the way. Convenient, quick flights were $200 if you booked early.
Posted by MDK | August 1, 2007 3:00 PM

I got the $60 three-day and am staying at the hostel as well. And the (also cheap) flight's so short you can fly out Friday morning and save yourself a night's accommodations.

I don't see any conflicts for Virgin Festival, at least not for my two days. You can hop pretty comfortably from Shout Out Out Out Out, to Cheap Trick, leave early for The Fratellis, then hang out until Felix. Then it's LCD Soundsystem, which slightly overlaps Beastie Boys' start time, and then hit TV on the Radio and Modest Mouse. (Fuck the Police.)
Day two is even simpler: Dan Deacon and Girl Talk back to back in the morning, then Regina, Spoon, leave Spoon early for Explosions, stay till Bad Brains, catch YYY, see the second-half of Wu-Tang, go back for Interpol, and then finish the night off dancing to M.I.A. or reliving high school days with 311. (Fuck the Smashing Pumpkins.)

Lolla all the way! More stages, more room, more bands, better location, better afterparties, better nightlife, Daft Punk.

I might contract out an ambulance to be on standby all weekend. It's time to get nuts!!

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2007 9:39 PM
Going to VFest - as much as I'd love to go to Chicago for Lolla, I can't afford it right now.
Excited for LCD, Fountains of Wayne and Beastie Boys, though.

Hooray Lollapalooza! Everyone go watch The High Class Elite.

im guessing its too late to make plans now but if you need a hotel, consider something out by o'hare in the worst case scenario. thats about a 45 minute ride on the blue line to the festival. and prices out there are much cheaper, like in the 100-130 dollar range. i did that last year and it was no trouble at all. this year im staying with a friend.
loop hotels are so expensive(300 per night when i checked last year), if cubs are in town i think hotels get booked because people come from all over the midwest, and the mets are visiting? forget it, hotels are probably booked solid.

I'm going to Lolla and hoping to survive the 95 degree heat. WTF I am way too old for this #$%@!

Austin City Limits Festival blows both of these away.
