Black Lips marched from Sound Fix to Music Hall

Black Lips @ Sound Fix

As advertised, the Black Lips played a crazy set of music at Sound Fix, that in circus-fashion, included costumes, burlesque dancers, a dixie land band, a crazy man, confetti, a fire-eater, and a march over to the Music Hall of Williamsburg for their second proper-headlining show in NYC in two days. Leia Jospe took these photos....

Go and see them, you are going to like them.

while the photos may lead you to believe this was some sort of publicity stunt (sound fix may have been), the show at MHOW was great. i've seen this bands a lot, this being the first since the new album dropped. they have certainly evolved as a band in a hurry. while there is still puking/spitting, they sound/look like a complete band. these guys are what's missing in rock music. they exemplify rock stars on/off the stage ALL THE TIME in a modern sense. these guys aren't puking on stage one minute and being driven to their 5 star hotel the next. some real cool cats. best of luck black lips.

I'm still not into the Black Lips when I listen to recordings but I'd go see them live anytime.

this was bad

i dont know how it went at the music hall but their performance at soundfix sounded awful and was boring. it seemed like half the audience was payed off/ hired by the labelto look good and make like the show was fun as it was being filmed by mtv.
i've seen 'em once before and again was bored and left half way through. what's so great about these guys? is it that they are kinda cute and charming and are known to get a little outta cotrol? so what?! they dont make good music. i dont really get why there's all this big hype surrounding them.

I loved the parade. The music, the confetti, the fire and the fact that the police didn't give a fuck. People stood out on their doorsteps to watch. I think it's the first time I've seen, much less been in, a parade over something I really felt like walking in the middle of the road for. The show was a lot of fun too, but kinda a blur, if you know what I mean. Thank you Black Lips, and to all the people who kept me company while I waited on my homeless date.

The show was so much fun! Thank you Black Lips and thank you VICE Records (p.s. i love you mtv).

And if you are wondering about the crazy burlesque performers pictured, there's a lot more where that came from baby - www.virb.com/suspiciouspackage

Why does the guy puke?

Is it nerves or sickness or drugs?

Actually I knew a guy in Boy Scouts who could puke voluntarily.

Ummm...Not really. Bx3 kinda sucks.

i made out with one of them, then he went on stage and peed into his own mouth.

i was at the music hall show and the guitarist was nonchalantly spewing all over the stage..he never missed a chord while puking either. it looked like a beer puke to me. if you get a chance to see them..go, they rock.

I hate schtick, and that's what THIS is - schtick. They've done this before, they'll do it again, and probably for the entire existence of this band. It is expected of them to this, or something like this, and when they don't their fans think something's wrong, which is what exactly happened @ this year's Siren, and consequently, they didn't receive as much as a footnote and one picture in the reviews of said festival. Plus, the fact that Vice Magazine/Records set this up with their friends at MTV .......

Spontaneity is what makes live music so entertaining, but when it becomes predictable and habitual, it's schtick.

i saw them do spit and catch and kissing thats about it. 2 times and both of those they really do well. Music is good, thats why I would see them again, they take garage rock/punk to that next level. the antics are kind of weird and they dont really need it. btw did they have a projector for these shows? heard it was stolen few months back.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2007 12:08 PM

they only do the schtick thing at big corporate bs shows.

if you see them play a real punk show at a real diy spot, they jut fucking play and it rocks.

the dude pukes because of nerves...He did it a lot in Atlanta also

Posted by rj | September 22, 2007 1:31 PM

Who cleans up the puke?

Posted by Anonymous | September 22, 2007 2:59 PM

the songs and marching band were compliments of the the Stumblebum Brass Band (http://myspace.com/stumblebumbrassband)

Ok I really like this band and these photos don't present the lackluster beginning to this night, nor the agonizing wait at Music Hall. The two opening bands were so bad and the crowd was terrible.

Black Lips were great once they go to the stage, but they are definitely attempting to mature so the stage antics were minimal. Overall though, the Music Hall is nice a venue now and the redo to North 6 isn't totally hated. The bathrooms will proved to be very nice to ladies when shows sell out and once the new paint smell dissolves, this could be a great place again.
