CNN: "Ryan Adams has meltdown at concert"

Throughout a show Thursday night, the 32-year-old singer-guitarist complained about the sound monitors onstage at the State Theatre. At one point, he moved two monitors, his microphone and his guitar pedals. In Ryan's defense, 70 minutes is not that short - Dirty Projectors were amazing, but they only played for 45 minutes Friday night. Saying he had a "meltdown" might be pushing it.After 70 minutes he'd had enough. Adams announced "the last song," played it and didn't return for an encore. Many fans stood and booed. [CNN]
Ryan Adams' Halloween show is sold out.

Of course the media's blowing this waaaaaay out of proportion but why did they boo him? That's considered NORMAL behavior for him. Last December, I saw him @ Town Hall where he and band played for about the same amount of time, 70 minutes, and no encore there either but nobody booed. I guess we're spoiled here in NYC and know that his M.O. is being unpredictable. The Holloween show should be awesome.

seriously, that's like getting mad that cat power walked off stage or that george clinton's tour manager asked your venue's sound guy to find their band as many different kinds of drugs as possible. besides, weren't they bored to tears after an hour ten of ryan adams?

Whatever the issues/meltdown was in Minneapolis, he was over it and played an amazing show in Madison the following night:

he pulled similar shit in maine last week as well. played 4 songs, asked the crowd "can we start over again?", entire band leaves stage, comes back out instantly and plays the opener "goodnight rose" a second time, and then played another 4 songs before "taking 5" to attempt to fix some monitor problems, which turned into a 15-20 minute break. band finally returns, plays another 6 songs, and then ryan says "goodnight" into the mic and slam the stand down. a total of 70 minutes of music, which sure is not that sure when you have another band or two supporting you, but when you have NO openers, and are charging people $40 bucks a ticket, you owe people a little fucking more than that, especially considering other nights had gotten 2+ hours.

not that SHORT i meant, heh

the guy is a major jerk off whose albums offer diminishing returns at best...hes got such a bad name for himself wherever he goes-his attitude stinks-to fans, to fellow artists and to promoters....

Meltdown is pushing it for sure. Every musician here can sympathize with shitty monitors. it happens. But you push through, right? But, ryan dude, hire your own sound man if it's such a chronic problem, or fire the one you have now. You take their ticket money, you're responsible for delivering the show.

Overrated. Just like Pete Doherty.

Besides being a total jerk, the older Ryan Adams gets, the more boring his music gets. He showed a lot of promise in his Whiskeytown days and early in his solo career but has never lived up to it. He is one the most unoriginal artists in music today. Every single song he does lately sounds just like either The Dead, Neil Young or Gram Parsons. He sounds like a one man tribute band!
It seems like more and more recording artists are having meltdowns, breakdowns, hissy fits or just canceling their gigs these days. Whatever happened to being a professional?

Sound like Ryan needs a drink!

speaking of bad sound systems. lets talk about how shitty the sound at the music hall of williamsburg is. its shitty. do something people.

the minneapolis show was great. sure, shitty sound guy, but any musician can tell you that you get through that. i waited 4 years to see adams live and the MN show is what he gave us. pretty petty shit if you ask me. The fans were great, the venue was fantastic, but the sound sucked. Who cares. I don't care if he is a perfectionist, he owed a decent show to Minneapolis especially after his last show in 2003.
His music is brilliant and his shows can be amazing, but the MN show was just immature, and childish(like ryan is). It's not about the money we paid, it's not about the over publicized "tantrum" he threw, its about the music and playing for the fans which he didn't do. It's just getting harder and harder to have a reliable and respectable musical inspiration these days and Adams proved that once again
Posted by rick | September 30, 2007 3:41 AM
His music is most certainly not "brilliant." Now THAT'S going overboard...

i thought the sound at mhow was good.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2007 12:28 PM
i think bryan adams is more cutting edge than this snore-inducing jackass. if i had to hear goodnight rose twice in one set i think i'd have a meltdown.
Posted by jerry koffman | September 30, 2007 7:15 PM
dudes. monitor issues are huge. if the venue/sound guys can't fix that, it's a huge fucking inconvenience.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2007 8:41 PM
How'd you like to see my foot inconvenience your ass?

Animal Collective had an equally large meltdown at Webster Hall tonight.
See it on CNN.com tomorrow.

sound might be subpar at MHOW, but it was worse when it was Northsix

"Animal Collective had an equally large meltdown at Webster Hall tonight."
yep, avey tare actually apologized for playing one song bad. He said he wasnt feeling it. I wasnt feeling it either. Did it feel like this band was going through the motions? Im very disappointed. And the no encore, even though they didnt deserve it, still sucked because people hung in there because they are loyal fans, for 10 damn minutes.
You know you have a problem when the best part of the night is the club dj and not the bands. Whoever it was, he pulled off a great set.

"sound might be subpar at MHOW, but it was worse when it was Northsix"
yeah thats like saying WW1 was pretty bad, but WW2 was even worse. ok maybe thats a bad anology, but we read all this press how this place had state of the art sound system. bullshit. Christina Carter opening for Thurston last week was probably the worst sounding single performance Ive seen in years. She should have stormed off the stage and I wouldnt have blamed her. Feedback and tin can like echo on every goddamn song. it was unbearable.

If you think Ryan Adams is amazing, you need to get out and see more music. And that comes from a RA fan! He is however an amazingly immature spoiled jerk!

animal collective sort of had a meltdown last night.
Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 11:02 AM
Yes, if that's a meltdown, then Animal Collective should be on CNN. What absolute GARBAGE last night was at Webster. Apparently the bass was too heavy for Avey to even contemplate trying to finish Fireworks, let alone come back out for an encore.
After 10 minutes of chanting and clapping, the lights finally came on and we realized they weren't coming back. So, were treated to roughly an hour and 15 minute set, w/o an encore, and half of Fireworks (not to mention them sleep walking through Leaf House).
So disgusted. Get over yourself, Avey.

i bought tix for AC waaaay back, but chose to go to iron & wine at town hall instead...
looks like i made the right choice
iron & wine was awesome...the full band really lets sam show off his guitar skills...the packed house was was bursting with energy and captivated from start to finish...it was cool to the performers match the enthusiasm of the crowd
Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 12:15 PM
come on now - get real - iron and wine shows don't have energy
Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 12:52 PM
dont blame Avey, he looked like the only one who was actually trying. and wtf where is Deakin? Im sick of the shitty mysteries surrounding this band.
Posted by a devoted Animal Collective fan | October 1, 2007 1:11 PM
and just to add, boy am i glad i didnt get tickets for tonight.
Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 1:25 PM
"Apparently the bass was too heavy for Avey to even contemplate trying to finish Fireworks, let alone come back out for an encore."
it definitely wasn't fireworks, as someone from the crowd requested that directly after the stalled song, and avey told him to come back tomorrow, which sounded a little harsh.
and it didn't sound anything life fireworks. i'm pretty sure it was an unreleased song, like many of the others played last night.
although i was disappointed with the lack of an encore, they most often do not play them.
i was more disappointed with the apparent disinterest in making up for what the members seemed to know was a sub-par performance.
and the lack of deacon was a bummer.
it did still have it's moments for me.
i hope tonights fans get a better show.

it was part of a medley that had come out of fireworks which would have then gone back into fireworks

Ryan Adams doesn't ask you to hang out with him. He doesn't even ask you to listen to his music. Attacks on his character and music are completely irrelevant to what happened that night. And given the size of the venue, his options were limited as to what could appease the situation. For instance, several years ago Will Oldham performed an acoustic set in the middle of a small outdoor audience when bad weather made electric music, and even being on the stage, dangerous. This did not seem to be an option. Carlos Santana, a musician known for extended jams, rarely plays longer than 80 minutes. Although Adams certainly would have liked to have given the crowd more for their money, he at least put in his eight hours, so to speak.

jesus.
i'm never going to illegally download one of his albums and only listen to it once EVER AGAIN. you blew it, buddy.

well, I'd be a bitter person as well if all I did was drive around in a van, earning shitty money, playing mediocre music to a bunch of losers who basically post photos and commentaries on BLOGS! Think of the life one COULD HAVE? HA!

I'm 19 and probably have gone to over 100 shows in my life. no need to patronize me. I'm not even big into ryan adams and went pretty much out of curiousity and he just blew me away.

I think Mr. Adams was just a little nervous about being in the backyard of his main musical influence. And I don't care what he might claim, Whiskeytown and Ryan owe A LOT of their musical sound to the Replacements and Mr. Westerberg. ("Yesterday's News" & "Revenge" are like long lost Replacements tunes.)
And having just saw Mr. Adams (and no, I don't write for the NY Times) in Northampton a few weeks back, I can say his set was mindblowing. Almost two and a half hours, he was joking with audience and his band mates, and seemingly in a great mood. One of the best shows I've seen in a long while.
As for him "melting down"...sounds more like he was just having a bad day, and really, he amongst us who hasn't can cast the first stone.
He rocks!
The Mats rock!
All is good!

please..... i actually adore ryan adams...but please...stop saying he's a genius...unless your definition of genius is just taking other people's music and changing the words.. be honest...it's what he does.... i buy his music... i like his lyrics and i love his voice..... i definitely think his talent lies mostly in his vocals... but he is one of the most unoriginal artists of his genre...
