Pete Best @ Kenny's - October 2005 (CRED)

Not the most popular venue obviously, but there's some history there, and I for one count myself as one of those with at least a few memories of going to see friends' bands play at Kenny's Castaways. Opinions of the venue aside for a second, what do you think of the lineups (listed below) of the 40th anniversary shows so far?

40 years and that's their big "all star" lineup? That's pathetic.
Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2007 2:14 PM
Bernie Shanahan is bigger than Jesus.

smithereens are honestly the only band ive heard of on the lineup

"Not the most popular venue obviously"
Pay no attention to the previous comments, it all came from one loser that couldn't get friends to come out to a show. Most likely because that person has no friends.

i don't see why anyone has a problem with kenny's castaways in the first place.

Yes, in 1980

Randy Burns is the national poet of Scotland, er...wait, no, that's Robbie Burns.

that's not cool, man. i was that loser who couldn't get his friends to come out to the show. well, not at kenny's but it might as well have been. you're a douchebag who asks his friends to give money to people like Kenny Castaway and Hilly Cristal so you can feed your ego. those types of places are nothings, and do nothing, and bring nothing, and just sort of sit there and will take credit as some patron of rock and roll when a young springsteen or ramone goes through their stage and really it had nothing to do with them.
i'm just syked that this topic reopened so i can tell you all how much kenny's sucks, and fuck cbgb's.
who here hasn't been told to fuk off by hilly cristal, and didn't think it was cute?
Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2007 3:44 PM
um previous comment about hilly and the fuk off or what have you retracted because this is a kenny castaway thread.

I CAN BARELY CONTAIN MYSELF!
THOSE SHOWS ARE GONNA BE OFF THE HOOK!
Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2007 4:22 PM
Listen. No disrespect to Tony Coniff or his friends but it's not a cookin' all-star jam till Elaine Caswell shows up. I saw her open for Chuck Mangione back in 89 and lemme tell you... that broad has some golden pipes!
Posted by EC Fan Club | September 20, 2007 4:28 PM
YEAH TONY, YOU FUCK, WE ALL WANT ELAINE CASWELL ON THAT JAMMY JAM!
I'D CLEAN HER GOLDEN PIPES AND SNAKE HER DRAIN ANYDAY!
AND CHUCK MANGIONE'S FEEL SO GOOD ALBUM IS SINGULARLY TRANSCENDENT! SINGULARLY TRANSCENDENT!

It's obvious there aren't a lot of New yorkers reading here or you'd respect Kenny's. Back when you actually had to be a half decent band to even book a gig (not just be able to promote yourself, and good musicians could actually earn a living doing it. You're just a bunch of 20 something out-of-town wanker hipsters trying to be funny.
There was a time when we would kick your asses in peace and not worry about you running off to the fuzz. Bring 'em back

time for bed, grandpa.

No Underdog, I'm a New Yorker for most of my life and The Bleeker St scene has/always will->BLOW! Kenny's only offered an outlet for losers to pretend they rock!

A lot of you people sound like a bunch of spoiled underachievers who couldn't get a gig as a musician because you're horrible and you berate anyone who is trying to actually do something. You are probably the same guys who hang in those trendy bars on les that are all carbon copies of each other. You obviously have no imagination, no creative talent, and no brains. You think that by writing your sludge here that you have contributed in some way when all you have done is prove your ignorance. Instead of writing nonsense, why not do something important. But that would require intelligence, so I'm sure there will be more sludge added. I for one will never visit this site again. It obviously caters to non starters.

I saw a frienf's band at Kenny's a month ago, they were great, then another band came one - The Rhodes I think, they were awesome. Went back to check the place out another weekend and the bands all sucked...go fig, it's either a hit or miss.

Well, have to acknowledge that Kenny's has been around a L-O-N-G time, gave a lot of bands (including a young, slim Smithereens) a start.
Having worked with Maria Kenny on this Thursday's show - a BENEFIT for "Little Kids Rock", an organization that brings musical instruments & instruction to NYC public schools - I know that whatever lineup there is, is not 'cos she didn't try to get some of the now-greats. She very much wanted to mix established and emerging.
So come and support them, toast Kenny's anniversary, donate to the cause, and enjoy the show.
This Thursday, The Witches In Bikinis will ROCK. This I know.

Kenny's Castaways has NOT been in existence for 40 years. It was the Mod Scene until the the 70s. Before that, it was The Show Boat. I know because my Dad owned it. And I remember the basement. And the tile floor and everything about it.

I think Paul Hipp does a very nice job on his new album.............John Ward

I think Kenny's has probably been around for around 40 years. I played there a few times, with my band, the Maroons in 1978 (33 years ago). It definitely hadn't just opened, so most likely, it had been there for at least a few years before 1978. So the poster (Karin) who says it hasn't been there 40 years is probably just splitting hairs/nit picking. I like the place because you actually went on stage when they scheduled you to! And the waitresses were hot. And Pat Kenny was really nice to us. As was Don Hill.
