KEXP in-studios during CMJ (2007)
KEXP will be back in NYC this year for their annual in-studio session broadcasts. Based on their posted schedule, eight of twenty bands have been announced, but are all the seats - even the "TBA" ones - really already full? I can see Band of Horses filling up quickly, but usually the lesser known bands take a while to fill up at least.
If they are all filled, I would say there's still a chance of getting in if your really want to - you can show up early, and if there are empty seats they let you in, or maybe they just haven't opened all the slots yet (anyone already sign up?). Last year the performances were behind glass - not ideal, but this year they're taping at "Gibson Showroom", and I have no idea what that space is like.

Wow, it really is getting close to impossible to go to SXSW or CMJ these days. There's just way too many people, and everything fills up immediately. I'm glad the "scene" is doing well for the bands' sakes, but I'm kinda looking forward to a time when rock isn't cool (again).

the sign-up has been up for about a week, but the names only started cropping up within the last few days. i bet a lot of people blanket covered the week (guilty) so they wouldn't get shut out of a spot.

kexp lets you sign up for everything. all you have to do is click a box. that's probably why the tba's got filled up so fast.
most people who do sign up though, rarely ever show up.

BV:
The list went up Friday, and by end of day almost all slots were full. Cheryl Waters told me a few weeks back, that the venue is much better for fans, the room is still separate from the bands but site lines are perfect and the sound in the audience room is excellent. (I wonder if KEXP took our comments about Gigantic to heart from last year's posts on BrooklynVegan.com) I looked at some photos of the Gibson Showroom on the internet, it looks like a great space. (will try to post some for you all later)
I will be going early Monday morning to the showroom to set up buttons, banners and postcards for KEXP and will report here and/or on my blog about the space shortly thereafter. I will also check if people not on the list are getting in without problems and will report that as well.

The Gibson showroom space is a pretty large performance room, about the same size as the room at Mercury Lounge. Great sound.
