Knitting Factory hanging in there ++ manager "decked"

Arcade Fire @ Knitting Factory, NYC - March 2004 (CRED)
Arcade Fire @ Knitting Factory

From last week's issue of Downtown Express

The new promoters Chantelle Hylton and Peter Agoston maintain that the Knitting Factory is still a valuable space, especially Downtown where the recent closings of multiple clubs including CBGB and Tonic have a void. Unsubstantiated rumors of the club moving locations at some point notwithstanding, they are still booking shows seven days a week. When asked if they feel the need to compete with the likes of Bowery Presents, Agoston said, “Certainly. New York City is a competitive playing field especially for an independent venue that’s up against a multi-tiered corporate infrastructure.” He continued, “It makes the job equal parts fun and challenging. Battling the big boys is what makes you stronger. I thrive off that competition." [Meat Puppets show signals a change for The Knit]
Back in April it was reported that Knitting Factory's building is for sale. I hope they survive it all.

And in slightly related news,

A man was nabbed for assault after he decked the manager of a TriBeCa nightspot and struck a bouncer, police sources said yesterday.

Eric Handy, 22, elbowed the bouncer and punched the manager while being escorted out of the Knitting Factory on Leonard Street at 10 p.m. Tuesday for disorderly behavior, the sources said.

He was charged with misdemeanor assault and was issued a police desk-appearance ticket, authorities said. [Sept 6 NY Post]

There was a punk show sponsored by Jagermeister going on in the main room that night, and some hip hop going on downstairs.

Last night Knitting Factory hosted the first in a new weekly series of shows hosted by bloggers. Did you go? How was Adam Kesher? I know David Bruno loved them, but it was his party.

i bet texting tickets will save the club.

it would be a total shame if it closed...i love that area.

the girl who works the advance tickets there is probably one of the coolest people in the entire city.

There are two young women who work the ticket booth there during the day, and they are both extremely nice people.

The bouncers are decent folk too. Last time I was there, the bouncers were trying to settle down some drunken ranting woman who was acting completely unreasonably. They were showing more patience with here than most people would have.

It seems they are working hard to make positive changes, and I'm impressed with what I've seen so far, although I've never gone to all 3 floors. I'm sure that's tough in snooty Tribeca. That guy Eric sounds who assaulted the bouncer sounds like a douche.

The texting for tickets thing is kind of interesting (there's a service fee but it's cheaper than Ticketmaster's). This month they're doing $5 off texted purchases so even with the fee it comes out cheaper to buy tix that way.

I've always liked this venue (been to all 3 floors!), hopefully they don't close/relocate when/if the building sale happens.

Adam Kesher was beyond amazing... seriously. Some really bad quality videos (with great audio) can be found here: http://ohhaveyouseenthis.blogspot.com/2007/09/best-new-band-you-havent-heard-of-yet

Everybody should go to a random show or 2 at the Knit soon and show support before it winds up like the rest.

The big thing which you might not guess by reading this blog is places other than the Bowery venues have shows. And the shows they do are more interesting and exciting than the Bowery who rarely hosts things that are really different.

The Knit will live on and will continue to be more culturally important than the cookie cutter and painfully predictable Bowery presents crap.

In the Bowery world Hip Hop, Punk Rock (except Against me) and Metal simply do not exist. They typically host yawn worthy white bread music for the very people that are destorying the fabric of this town. If they could they would just do the Arcade Fire at every one of their venues 365 nights a year.

Visit the Knit soon and drop a few bucks and help keep something truly unique going.

" If they could they would just do the Arcade Fire at every one of their venues 365 nights a year."

You probablly only eat vanilla ice cream, wear khakis and have a bedtime.

Keep it safe.

Peter's the man. Glad to see he is rep-ing some stuff there now. I like The Knit.

"The big thing which you might not guess by reading this blog is places other than the Bowery venues have shows."

Ironic that you write that in a news item about Knitting Factory.

The fact of the matter is this item is rare. How often are the Knit's 3 stages mentioned here? Todd P shows? etc...
