DOWNLOAD: A Place To Bury Strangers - Never Going Down (MP3)

Ludfest

Sorry for not posting about this earlier - it sort of got lost in the holiday shuffle. BIG FREE GREAT OUTDOOR SHOW PARTY FESTIVAL ON THE LOWER EAST SIDE THIS SUNDAY!

The first annual ‘LudFest’ block party/fundraiser will take place on Sunday, September 9th. ‘LudFest’ is a fundraiser for the 7th Precinct Community Council, with proceeds going toward charitable functions, such as giving toys out to needy members of our community, as well as funding for the Explorers Program, which gives teens activities to keep them off the streets. Local stores and restaurants will participate and rent tables to offer their items. All proceeds will go to charity.

The event will include local bands, including Secret Machines, A Place to Bury Strangers, Dub Trio, Other Passengers, The Sugar Report, Emok and Ruthless Thomas. After party will be held at Pianos.

A Place to Bury StrangersMany familiar names on that list of entertainment, but let's use this post to point out something pretty cool that happened last week. Out of seemingly nowhere, Pitchfork shot the Brooklyn Band called A Place to Bury Strangers from relative obscurity to relative fame.
.....Few people understand this better than Oliver Ackermann, frontman for thunderous Brooklyn three-piece A Place to Bury Strangers: Under his catch-all company name Death by Audio (it's also a music venue, recording studio, and collective), he custom-builds and designs his own hand-wired pedals, which are used by everyone from Lightning Bolt and Serena Maneesh to Wilco, Spoon, and TV on the Radio. Not coincidentally, anyone looking for a quick description of his own band can look to the names he gives these things: Interstellar Overdriver, Supersonic Fuzz Gun, Total Sonic Annihilation. ["A Place To Bury Strangers" = 8.4 = Pitchfork Best New Music]
See them at Ludfest. Listen at MySpace. More tour dates below...

"2004 called, it wants its Sunday back"

Why would you diss free music?

Posted by Anonymous | September 7, 2007 4:52 PM

IT'S FREE PEOPLE. LIGHTEN UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HERE IS A SIMPLE SOLUTION: IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, DON'T GO.

The P-Fork big-ups to Place To Bury Strangers is seemingly out of nowhere. Maybe it's just the climate of file trading, but I've had the album (or most of the tracks plus demo stuff) for close to a year now.
It's certainly worthy of the praise but it is strange. Did someone at P-fork get bored and begin randomly digging through crates or something?

I'm coming all the way from Scotland for this festival and it will rock!
APTBS and Secret Machines fuckin kick ass.
Cant wait to get the APTBS album.
I think I'll buy it tomorrow.
Peace

I like these bands! I'm thrilled they are still kicking and (in PtBS's case) finally getting some major press. Had a bit of deja vu, is all.

Jeez...just a joke, fellas.

Posted by Jeff | September 7, 2007 5:45 PM

Yes, but sometimes jokes can go too far, Jeff! You have no idea who you've hurt with that comment!! SHow yourself!!!

Posted by Anonymous | September 7, 2007 7:31 PM

Damn... Everyone needs to lighten up. It's a free outdoor show on Ludlow. No more hurt feelings :)

Oversensitivity is so 2004...

A Place to Bury Stranger opened for the Jesus & Mary Chain at the recent Webster Halls shows. I could not enjoy their set because it was much to loud.

Nice.. I'll be there: as I planned when heard of it.

BTW This Country and World needs help, truth, and love.

Let's all spread the word somehow, by media, arts, word, ect.

APTBS just released a 10 song official cd (not cdrs or mp3s this time) on a really small label a couple weeks back. A very small pressing, yes, but it's official enough to get reviewed on pfork. And a good thing, too... they're getting some much-deserved attention.
They've since been picked up by a somewhat larger label in chicago and will be recording new stuff for them soon.
I have nothin' but love and burst eardrums for the 'strangers... yeah, I'll be at the ludfest. I'm interested to hear if the Secret Machines' new stuff has evolved since the spring.
Here's hoping better food vendors are there.

we here at Cakeshop are also offering free music all day sunday during LUDfest. instead of conflicting with the talent outside, we're offering our take in what literally the future of indiepunk might look like...all these bands are under 21, but worth the price of free.
i especially reccommend The Duchess of Lightning and Fiasco.

hmm, well, more b.s. to add to the mix, but it's accurate:
yup, jeff was joking and has a good sense of humor and some of the others got (typically on blogs) carried away. but it's a good point. not jeff's, but the fifth comment. and no, not that the bands are a flash in the what the fuck ever. they r great and are part of a great scene here (and other cities, but especially here) it's the cheeseheads who r the flash in the pan. get it right. so, for the 50, 80, 90, whatever percent of the assholes who jump on the "hipster" train, that's the problem. no, it's not the end of the world, but it's why clubs, bars, venues that care about real indie/alternative music are overwhelmed in the last few years, fucking all the people who love the music/scene/people. call it "hipster" now, whatev, it's never gone away, always been there, new wave, post-punk, etc etc. never changed, new bands, older bands. same type of people who love it. whatever name u give it. except... for the trendoid losers who latch onto it becuase it's what's cool. so every inch of space is crammed. or worse, they don't know what the fuck they r in a place for.
so, get it right. indie/alternative/hipster-- overused words. the real stuff is and has always been there. so enjoy it if u really like it. otherwise, please go and play in another "cool" sandbox, for as long as u r told it is fashionable.
so go, it should be a great show, they r all great bands, have fun. if u don't get it, pls don't go.

APTBS sounds really, really, really derivative. Solid band but.. why not just listen to New Order or JAMC?

Posted by Anonymous | September 10, 2007 9:53 AM

APTBS was probably the worst band I have seen live in a while...can somebody confirm if they are usually decent (i.e. attempt to sing, not stare at their feet, play notes) and deserve another chance at their show in two weeks?

Also...wtf, why did the Secret Machines never play?

Posted by Anonymous | September 10, 2007 7:18 PM

k, a couple of points on the last comments.

well, yes, aptbs are "deriviative", tho i think that's yet another much overused term when looking into any art form, not just music, and especially when people tend to criticize indie/alt music, as that genre is, by definition, supposed to impart something new, perhaps a different edge.
however, as i said, it's overused as a means of criticism. and it also always seems to come with a negative connotation. so, yes, aptbs is very similar to (early) jamc, but they most definitely add a different dimension, especiallly live. beyond their brilliant and obvious skills as muscians, as a technical merit, they also impart a punk sensibility to jamc (shoegaze) style. they basically fuse the two forms agressively together. it's their energy in presenting this genre that gives their sound a fantastic punch. as an aside, or by way of example, i can refer to one of the recent jamc shows. honestly, it was really good, but let's just say, the band lacked, uh, pretty much any sense of real energy. back to aptbs, another aspect they add is their somewhat darker lyrics, that as well brings another diff from jamc. so, influenced, yes, and all music is influenced by much of what came before, but then that's another discussion entirely. besides, it's just fun, really fantastic music.
as for new order (?) that band shouldn't have been mentioned in the question. there's no similarity. and as to the question itself, even assuming that is has validity to be asked at all, then the simple answer... why not listen to both?
as to the other comment about it being a bad show, etc. etc. hmm, there were two rather generic sounding bands at ludfest, and i'm not sure why they were booked for it, based on the other bands on the bill. but whatever, they were there. my question would be, why were u at ludfest if not to hear some real indie/underground stuff? if it's not your kinda thing, that's cool, but u should probably frame your criticism a lil better. honestly, i had to laugh when i read your comment about staring at their shoes... for those who may not know, that's EXACTLY how the genre became named. an unimpressed critic for NME, at an early concert by either slowdive or chapterhouse (recollections differ, probably easy to research) called the band members "a bunch of shoegazers....staring down at their shoes". lol, your criticism seems kinda quaint in light of that.
now, as to why secret machines didn't play. they did; they were about to go on and then had to go play their gig at pianos. it was dusk, and as i noticed being there, the sched seemed to be pretty messed up and late, and i assume there was some issue with permits, police, etc. so they had to play inside.

Posted by patrick | September 10, 2007 8:33 PM

Does it actually bother you that APTBS stared at the floor? Or even perhaps their instruments? Where would you prefer they look? At you? Maybe you didn't like it because you weren't listening. Maybe you were just in deep thought about yourself? Perhaps if you were listening you would have heard the announcement that Secret Machines were to play at Pianos.

Posted by Anonymous | September 10, 2007 8:59 PM

For those who doubt the sheer gorgeosity of APTBS, listen to their track "Ocean". It's on the band's myspace, as well as the new s/t cd... but you gotta turn that volume knob up, up, up.
Dig?

Posted by i want my daddy's records | September 11, 2007 12:46 PM

That was a great day of music... For the lucky few who got in to see Secret Machines, they killed it. Beat watching football...
