DOWNLOAD: MGMT - Time to Pretend (MP3)

MGMT

MGMT are a Bowie-esque "electro pop duo" from Brooklyn who happen to be signed to Columbia Records. They also happen to be going on tour with (the Bowie-loving) Of Montreal - that includes the show at Roseland Ballroon in NYC on October 13th They are:

Andrew Vanwyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, two psychic pilgrims whose paths first intersected in the green pastures of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, circa 2002.
I should see them live before making any judgement because I can listen to the above MP3 over and over again, but most of the other songs streaming on their MySpace seem a little too unoriginal, a little too.....Bowie? I also haven't heard the whole new album (out late 2007 or early 2008).

Their MySpace page is really annoying too. I'd still see them live I guess (at least once) - like at Cake Shop in NYC tonight (Sept 12). All tour dates below....

Being 'weird' and coming from Brooklyn ain't too cool anymore. I actually just heard some of their songs on Myspace (thanks for that...) and probably one of the cornier stuff I've heard in a while. There is already a show called 'Flight of the Conchords' and 'Ween'..Sorry, the shtick is done.

i'd love a follow up/reaction post to their show tonight.
i booked their second date (BJ's fredonia) for an expirimental dance party and am interested in what their live performance is like.

these guys are fucking awesome. their myspace sucks, you really have to go see the show. they sold out mercury lounge in twenty minutes. they are not as derivative as you think, and they are going to blow up when the album comes out

Posted by a;lksjdflkj | September 12, 2007 7:26 PM

since when was it a bad thing to sound like bowie

Posted by Anonymous | September 12, 2007 7:30 PM

saw them open for of montreal 2 years ago...fucking terrible

Posted by Anonymous | September 12, 2007 8:10 PM

miserable, miserable band. saw them by chance at mercury lounge. ugh. bowie-esque?! not so much.

Posted by Anonymous | September 12, 2007 8:53 PM

they just straight rip bowie off if that's what you mean.

Posted by Anonymous | September 12, 2007 9:04 PM

i saw them on that of montreal tour also, it's just two dudes lip synching along to their laptop... sooooo if you're looking for a live show to convince you, probably not gonna happen

Posted by Anonymous | September 12, 2007 9:36 PM

nah, they're great.

i saw them open for of montreal two years ago as well and loved them. i bought one of their cds and it immediatly became the theme music for my road trip that year. time to pretend rocks!

Hey Dummies: they play with a full (5-piece) band now; are definitely not "electro-pop"; have one bowie-sounding joint (which is still great); Dave (fucking) Friedman produced their record; and they're real dope. so shut up and try to make a better record if you can.

I love this band even if the sound was terrible at Cake Shop last night. Their new album is currently on repeat.

Posted by Anonymous | September 13, 2007 10:40 AM

did anyone see them at the Annex or at Orhcard bar?

Posted by Anonymous | September 13, 2007 11:06 AM

anyone see the annex show

Posted by Anonymous | September 13, 2007 11:11 AM

Yeah they should stop being weird and being from brooklyn. Idiots!

Posted by Mickey Mouse | September 13, 2007 12:21 PM

What n annoying myspace sight

Posted by Anonymous | September 13, 2007 12:45 PM

Learn to fucking spell. I wonder if people think that MGMT sounds like Bowie because they do tricky little things like have melodies, harmonies, musicality. HMMM... That was the old 70s shtick.. Bizarre idea... Etc. Blah blah blah.

Posted by Anonymous | September 13, 2007 12:57 PM

we eat meat!

Posted by Anonymous | September 13, 2007 1:00 PM

they were weird way before moving to brooklyn - you forget they did go to the most obnoxious liberal arts college...

Posted by Anonymous | September 13, 2007 1:37 PM

I think mgmt are funny. maybe we should lighten up. for christsakes, they're myspace has like 90 images of slime and a dinosaur grinding the golden gate bridge. that's not serious. chiiiiill

Posted by Anonymous | September 13, 2007 1:45 PM

hmm, i went to their myspace page fearing the worst, but besides the fact that their page is an example of what not to do, i was pleasantly surprised by the music! good songs and good production, there are levels of complexity in there. it's not really bowie-esque at all, except for one song where the vocals sound like him.

their songs utilize melody, harmony and rhythm. that's a lot more than i can say for a lot of the other "hipster flava" groups out there.

if your band is from brooklyn, does that mean you are now held to a higher standard?

Posted by Anonymous | September 13, 2007 2:11 PM

annoying, not obnoxious!! people please

Posted by Anonymous | September 13, 2007 2:17 PM

i think they're awesome

Posted by your lady | September 13, 2007 2:50 PM

MGMT has an incredible sound and a spectacular live show. I haven't heard anything this good in ages. Mercury Lounge had throngs of people trying to fight their way in. How are you even posting anything about a band you've never heard live and judging them from a couple of myspace DEMOS. Fucking lame.

Posted by filet mignon | September 13, 2007 3:33 PM

yeah! the management! 10 bucks says bowie will love these dudes

Posted by Anonymous | September 13, 2007 4:19 PM

unoriginal?

Posted by Anonymous | September 13, 2007 4:22 PM

"i dont think it sounds like a derivit"

Posted by Anonymous | September 13, 2007 4:23 PM

have you people ever heard of a sense of humor? they are hilarious. more bands should be like them and not take themselves so seriously. it's supposed to be fun, right?

Posted by Anonymous | September 13, 2007 5:25 PM

You're annoying...

Posted by Carol Brady | September 13, 2007 6:47 PM

their myspace page is obviously intentionally annoying. brooklyn vegan, you have zero taste.

Posted by rere | September 13, 2007 6:56 PM

it's Fridmann not Friedman you fucking ponce

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2007 10:47 AM

looks like most people like it. nice to get such an intense reaction either way

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2007 5:22 PM

They are fucking amazing. you really can't say anything about them unless you've heard more than one song. plus, their shows are great. they are an extremely hard working band and deserve more then a scan on myspace. their myspace doesn't reflect the band at all. fucking love MGMT!

Posted by Anonymous | March 16, 2008 8:00 PM

What's original these days anyway? I haven't seen them live so I won't comment there, but I love their album. People should just lighten up, the whole thing is a joke. For God sake they have a songs on the album about selling out to a major record label and being "rock stars".
They've said in countless interviews that they're trying to be annoying or obnoxious.

Posted by Anonymous | April 20, 2008 2:36 PM

Their whole thing is to be unoriginal, to appropriate noticeable items from past styles and tamper with familiar traditions. There is equal reverence and irreverence in their music. It's not just "a total joke"; there is a serious artist's statement behind the prank. It is more than Dada and more than a postmodern jab at hackneyed ideas; it is an odd adding and combining of these elements to transmit a summative chaos, with more of an apocalyptic grin of delirium and a wide-eyed fascination than a know-it-all hipness. There is a scream of terror behind all of it. If you want to dig into their myspace aesthetic, realize that they are trying to present something as disgusting and vile as how they consider their music and the modern world itself to be. And then realize that that it is exactly what makes those things so beautiful and hilarious and horrifying to them.

Posted by Anonymous | May 27, 2008 8:02 PM

you all are gay...who gives a fuck about their myspace listen to fucking oracular spectacular...the shit is dope....people you want to hate on them for sounding bowie-esque....who cares, the band obviously has good taste, the psych-pop sound kills it....and is not something that you will hear to common in modern music....so all you winey fuckers who are hating on them for unoriginality shut the fuck up and go listen to your nickelback
