Patti Smith @ Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NYC

Patti Smith @ The Music Hall of Williamsburg

Patti Smith played the new Music Hall of Williamsburg last night (Sept 6, 2007) - two nights later than she was supposed to. I unfortunately wasn't there, but Edwina Hay was on hand do document the festivities. Her report includes the part where Patti humorously read from the Brooklyn Vegan comments. I'd be lying if I said I didn't think that was pretty cool.

Keep reading for more of Edwina's photos & words.....

patti was really great. she cleared up some of the misconceptions regarding the postponement of the show. she told a story of how she met a turtle at nearby galapagos and missed her soundcheck. she also talked a lot between songs and was really, really funny. she talked about the comments in the post about the show being postponed and how ridiculous they were (the indie vs. indy vs. indiana debate was specificially mentioned). she said it was unfair to blame the construction workers who were working on their holiday, labor day. also, she doesn't participate in online forums because she doesn't like filling out the forms. she also apologized for charging so much for tickets and someone shouted back, "you're worth it."

she did her cover of nirvana's "smells like teen spirit" and talked about a journalist's review she saw on itunes. the person said negative things about her covering that song, but eventually gave the song a listen and apologized.

a song was dedicated to luciano pavarotti, and she told the story of how jackson, her son who is in her band, was missing from his bedroom when he was 7 or 8 years old. she eventually found him outside their house -fishing under the moon while listening to pavarotti on his boombox.

she went on about 9:05 and played for more than 2 hours. the encore was "rock n' roll nigger" and was a fantastic way to end her set. -edwina

Patti's next NYC is at the Beacon Theater. She said it will be special because it's it's fred "sonic" smith's birthday.

Fran Healy stoped me and asked for directions to this show down N6th St. last night - I assume he was there too. Looks like it was fun...

Did anyone tape this show? I wanna hear her spiel about our comments.

As for construction workers working on their holiday: If the postponement of the opening of the MHoW was their fault, then the blame for their having to work on Labor Day (assuming they were *required* to work that day) rests with them. They must have got overtime for working that day, anyway, even if it was their fault.

Let's not forget that construction workers who were carelessly smoking (and even boozing) on the job started the fire at the former Deutsche Bank building that resulted in the deaths of two firefighters and has residents of downtown worrying anew about the air they're breathing. Isn't Patti Smith a smoker herself, though? So she'd probably give those construction workers a pass.

"also, she doesn't participate in online forums because she doesn't like filling out the forms."

Jesus, how lazy can you get? Here on Brooklyn Vegan, you just have to type in your two cents, you don't even have to enter a name.

What in the hell do construction workers at the Deutsche Bank Building have to do with construction workers at MHoW? What are YOU smoking?

i always thought indianapolis residents referred to the city as "nap-town" instead of "indie".

Was anyone from Indiana at the show last night?

At the show I leaned up against a wall last night in the main room and felt something jabbing me, I then realized it was a bunch of wires sticking out from a disconnected electrical outlet.

Nice.

Fuzzy: Given that Patti Smith is left wing (progressive, what have you) in her politics, she just may be of the opinion that all laborers are somehow noble and I wanted to dispute that notion.

The construction workers at the Deutsche Bank building are back to smoking and boozing despite the fact that led to the deaths of two firefighters last year:
