White Williams - 2007 Tour Dates (w/ Dan Deacon/Girl Talk/Battles), CMJ, TONIGHT, etc
DOWNLOAD: White Williams - New Violence (MP3) (via)
White Williams (real name = Joe Williams) was first brought to my attention when he was added to the Dan Deacon / Girl Talk tour. Since then I've been listening to an advanced copy of his forthecoming album Smoke pretty regularly (out nov 6 on TigerBeat). Think laid-back-laptop-dancey-electro-pop-sometimes-sing-along-like-Hot-Chip. One song is a cover of the 80's hit "I Want Candy".
And Williams (23 years old) and Girl Talk Greg Gillis go way back. From his bio:
Williams' first electronic music project was called So Red -- it was part of a tiny scene of Greg Gillis (Girl Talk), Andrew Strasser, Frank Musarra (Hearts of Darknesses) and Luke Venezia (Drop the Lime). Together they played and booked shows and parties.I couldn't help, but notice that White Williams is also friends with NYC's own club-personality Sophia Lamar. She appears as the model on the cover of the new CD, and is listed as a band member on his MySpace page - instrument = "PILE DRIVING ACCUMULATOR" - I don't know what that means either.
After two tours with Girl Talk when Williams solo project started coming into its own, Williams started gravitating toward pop music. He wanted to learn about the studio situations of his favorite albums of the 70's and 80's and was fascinated by the idea of re-contextualizing how music could be made with the tools given.
White Williams has never (or barely ever) played live, so that means tonight (Sept 5) @ Mercury Lounge (w/ French all-girl-band Plasticines) will be his first ever show (or close to it) as White Williams. Maybe it will be a great and monumentous occasion you'll be telling your grandkids about, or maybe it will be a dreadful and embarrassing experience that you can't believe you were charged money for. Check it out, or get to Webster Hall early on September 15th, or wait for CMJ, or go see him at the Annex, or when he tours with Battles, etc....

If you take the time to post a comment about a musician on a blog, why would you not actually take the time to listen to the music before doing so?

"One song is a cover of the 80's hit 'I Want Candy'."
...which itself was a cover of a song first recorded by The Strangeloves in 1965: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Want_Candy

i normally do take the time to listen to the music but i refuse to listen to any of this garbage laptop music that is somehow getting attention

Right...so you see the word "laptop" and publicly pass judgment without listening, when had you listened you might have realized that it's not "laptoppy" at all. Unfortunately all it takes to become part of the public record these days is a hot head and a keyboard.

Or I should say, "a hot head and a laptop."

i never said anything about him or his music, just that i think the genre is retarded. if you find it entertaining to watch somebody play music on a computer more power to you, i just prefer a band or dj

Right, well, since he's never played, how do you know that his show consists of playing music from a laptop? I think the answer is that you don't. However, that hasn't stopped you from taking an artist that you know next to nothing about and putting him on a pedestal from which you can make a semi-related statement. Maybe you should just start your own anti-laptop blog rather than smearing your mess all over this one.

Did anyone go to the show at the Mercury Lounge last night? How were Plastiscenes?

By now we can agree that a laptop is an instrument, not a genre.

Okay so friday night in boston simian mobile disco is playing with the princes, then saturday they split up -- or will they? Opinions, which are SO hard to come by on these things:
Webster hall doors at 5:30. Gramercy doors at 9:00. I missed an entire hot chip show at webster hall 'cause i'm an asshole and got there at 10:30 once (waiting on a lost friend) and last time i saw simian i'm pretty sure they made music till 3:30-- So because i'm made out of money i'm going to imagine in my mind that i'll be able to see both shows. What do you think?
