No Kids - For Halloween

DOWNLOAD: No Kids - For Halloween (MP3)

For Halloween

There's Black Kids, Cool Kids, Cold War Kids, New Kids on the Block, Kid Sister, No Age, and now No Kids.....

No Kids

No Kids are a trio from Vancouver, Canada comprised of 75% of the highly acclaimed pop band P:ANO fronted by genius Nick Krgovich. “For Halloween” is the first single from their upcoming Tomlab debut entitled Come Into My House due out February 19, 2008. The album, named after Queen Latifah's 1989 club banger, achieves an unsuspecting cohesiveness considering it weaves together Jam & Lewis-inspired production with the Buddhist pop sensibilities found in the work of Arthur Russell and a filmic atmosphere that hints at Douglas Sirk's masterful melodramas. These disparate elements work to form some sort of weird high art dance pop that is made for everyone. No Kids and Nick Krgovich can also be heard on David Shrigley's Worried Noodles released October 23rd on Tomlab.

Ozzy fans tricked into going to jail

Ozzy in concert in Canada - Oct 27, 2007 (CRED)
Ozzy concert

Roughly forty Ozzy Osbourne fans invited to a pre-party before the Ozzy/Rob Zombie concert in Fargo, North Dakota, were greeted with an unexpected surprise: Handcuffs! In what has to be the best sting operation since To Catch a Predator, invitations were sent out to people who ignored court summons, didn’t pay child support, failed to pay fines, etc. Approximately forty Ozzy fans (or Rob Zombie fans, to be fair) responded to the invite and attended the bash, which was held at the concert venue by PDL Productions. Little did they know, PDL stood for “Paul D. Laney,” a county sheriff, and that all those meaty guys wearing PDL T-shirts were actually deputy sheriffs, probation officers and local DEA members. Rather than boozing, the miscreants who showed up got arrested on outstanding warrants. “It was more of a warrant party,” Laney joked. Some on the cuffed end even thought the elaborate ruse was funny, but a few turned hostile when the reveal was made. [Rolling Stone]
I wonder if Ozzy and Rob knew it was going to happen, becaue that move was SO not rock n roll. Tour dates, here.

Lordi are (were) horrible (last night @ Irving Plaza)

Lordi (cred)
Lordi

I'm a sucker for a good stage show - schtick or not. I like the music to be good too though. That is possible. Gwar used to be great - original, talented and creative. Somehow I tricked myself into believing that Lordi - despite not looking at all original - would play good music, and that overall it would be a good time. Hey - they're big in Europe (yeah I know, so is David Hasselhoff) - "Hardrock Halellujah" rocks like Kiss - they even won the Eurovision Award. So last night (Oct 29, 2007) I went to see them open for Type O Negative at the venue formerly known as Irving Plaza (their first NYC show I think). One word: horrible. Not even "so bad they're good" (ok, maybe that a little - sometimes I laughed). Just kind of unoriginal, cheesy (with cheap props), and bad. Luckily I was mainly there to see Type O anyway.

Worth noting at least: Twisted Sister guitarist Jay Jay French came out to play one song with Lordi (without a costume on). Twisted Sister play the same venue on December 21st. Lordi & Type O Negative play two more shows together - tonight in Philly, and at Starland Ballroom in Jersey on Halloween.

NAS's new album title

NasNas is calling his new album "Nigger" (not "Nigga") - a term this is symbolically illegal in NYC, and NYC is the one putting up the biggest fight....

Behemoth record label Universal Music Group must change the name of rapper Nas’s new album, “Nigger,” or risk losing $84 million in state investments, a Fort Greene assemblyman said this week.

“[They are] profiting from a racial slur that has been used to dehumanize people of color for centuries,” said Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries (D–Fort Greene), a former entertainment industry big-wig. [Brooklyn Paper]

Nas told Rolling Stone he'll stick with the name anyway, even if...
“It’s probably going to make people uncomfortable. I don’t expect a lot of people to sell a record called Nigger. Hopefully, people can open their minds up and lose some of their fear and deal with it. It’s just an album. It’s one piece of the many things I do, and this will be one of my favorite pieces.” And his label is firmly behind him, “It will be certain record stores that will be scared to deal with it. The record label is gung ho, and it’s ready to go.”
50 Cent says Nas sucks. Some say it's just a publicity stunt. What do you say?

Tokyo Police Club playing Woodies. Amy Winehouse? SNL

DOWNLOAD: Tokyo Police Club - Citizens of Tomorrow (MP3)

not actually Amy Winehouse (CRED) (MORE)
Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse's father Mitch has claimed that his daughter cannot get into the USA because she was duped into signing a drugs possession confession.

The singer's father told 'This Morning' that Amy was asked to sign a form after her recent arrest in Norway but she did not know what she was signing. Winehouse and her husband Blake Fielder-Civil were arrested for possession of marijuana but the singer's father claims that this was a mistake. "It didn't belong to her, it belonged to someone else on the tour. They arrested Blake, Amy and the person who was responsible."

"They only released them after they signed a form, which they were told was a release form," he said.

"It was in Norwegian. It was actually a confession, so this is being dealt with now by the Norwegian authorities and the British consulate because the ramifications of that are that she now cant get into the States and she was meant to go next week."

I guess "What else is new?" would be good to say here. Maybe they'll clear it up in time for her performance at the Woodies @ Roseland on November 8th. In related news, Tokyo Police Club has been added to that bill that also includes Spank Rock. They don't sell tickets, but I'll be giving a bunch away (stay tuned).

Amy is also scheduled to play Saturday Night Live on November 10th. More TPC tour dates below..

Dirty Projectors playing Bowery -- 2007 Tour Dates

Dirty Projectors in London, October 2007 (CRED)
Dirty Projectors saying hi

Currently busy on tour in Europe until the end of November, Dirty Projectors will play a headlining show at Bowery Ballroom in NYC on December 4th (tix on sale Wednesday). Yeasayer recently said an interview,

One of the best shows we’ve ever played was with Dirty Projectors, Spank Rock, and Ponytail all on the same bill. That kind of diversity is ideal. [Drowned in Sound]
No openers announced for the Bowery show yet. Travis Morrison recently said,
I saw a show of a band called the Dirty Projectors at the Black Cat, I was screaming like a girl they were so good. Oh my god! I was actually starting to worry about my relationship with rock and roll, nothing was really like... I mean there were things I would appreciate and enjoy listening to, but I hadn’t been obsessed with rock music for a while. And I kind of got a band crush, I kind of flipped out about this band. [DCist]
That was pretty much how I acted last time I saw them too. Get three new live tracks for free at Daytrotter. All tour dates below...

Klaus Kinski's Comedy Canon (10/29/07)

Todd Barry

Todd Barry is easily one of the greatest comedians in existence. Period. On November 1, 2007 at Union Hall Todd celebrates his 20th year in comedy on the exact date he first went on stage. Also on the bill are David Cross, Sarah Vowell, Michael Showalter, Heather Lawless, Slovin and Allen, and some surprises. Or maybe just one surprise. Probably more than one. There are a hand full of tickets left online and a few will be available at the door so buy now or get to the venue EARLY (doors are at 7:30pm). All proceeds go to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

JensWhile others were bouncing from JENS Lekman to Danzig on Saturday night, I was bouncing from (Fred Armisen's) JENS Hannemann show at Sound Fix to Comedians of Comedy at Irving Plaza. Jens came out at around 8:00pm to a comfortably crowded room . His stage was flanked with two drum kits and he began with a drum solo that was a pitch perfect caricature of every instructional drum video solo I've ever seen. From there he spoke for a short time and challenged anyone who was willing, to a drum-off. Shortly after that, the wig came off and Fred was Fred which is what I hoped would eventually happen; it isn't often that Fred Armisen does an appearance like this. He covered topics such as SNL (2 years left on his contract), Trenchmouth (don't expect a reunion EVER), and TV he likes (I couldn't agree more). He even played some melodies on the piano. He was extremely funny, gracious, and a real joy to hear talk.

MAria BamfordFrom Sound Fix, I hopped on the L-Train to check out the second of two Comedians of Comedy shows at Irving Plaza. Comedians of Comedy is the one show I look forward to more than any other on the planet. And with the fear in the back of my head that this might be the last CoC tour, I enjoyed this show with maximum relish. It was one of those shows that made me feel so lucky to live in NYC as we were treated to easily the best line-up of the entire tour. The line-up included Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, Maria Bamford, Eugene Mirman, David Cross, Aziz Ansari, John Mulaney, Jon Glaser and Jon Benjamin, and Heather Lawless. From start to finish, the show was absolutely rock-solid. Even when some douche-nozzle had the balls to heckle Maria Bamford, the show never lost its momentum. As a matter of fact, that heckler probably added to the show's velocity as the subsequent comedians worked destroying said heckler into their routines. Every single comedian commanded the room, but I have to say the highlight of the show was John Mulaney. Sure, I've seen all of his material before, but he is such an amazing performer that his bits are always funny to me. Come to think of it, if there's one comedian out there who needs to make a CD ASAP, it's Mulaney. Sadly, no Zach Galifianakis this time around.

More comedy & NYC show listings, below....

10/29 - Rififi: TOTALLY JK with Joe and Noah!: Featuring Greg Johnson, Gabe & Jenny, and Max Silvestri, the highlight of this show, really, is Brett Gelman's performance of his opus 1000 Cats. You have to see this. I am not kidding

10/30 - Heathers: CAVALCADE!: Featuring Todd Barry, Rob Huebel, Paul Scheer, Christian Finnegan, Pete Holmes & More! And it's FREE! Heathers is located at 506 E.13th St. (btwn A & B).

10/31 - Union Hall: UNION HALL-O-WEEN: I can't believe I am going to miss this. Spend Halloween with the cast of Lucy, Daughter of the Devil, Cheeseburger, Cassettes Won't Listen, and more., Only $5 to get in! Thanks Onion!

11/7- Carnegie Hall: Sarah Silverman
With Special Guests Doug Benson and Todd Barry
: No more tickets left on line, but try your luck by calling 212-247-7800

11/11 - Irving Plaza: ASSSSCAT: Featuring Matt Besser, Amy Poehler, Ian Roberts, & Matt Walsh plus special guests including Chad Carter & Horatio Sanz. RAD!

Land of Talk's gear was stolen in NJ

Land of Talk @ Maxwell's, Hoboken, NJ - Oct 26, 2007 (CRED)
Land of Talk @ Maxwells

we were robbed at the Howard Johnson in Clifton N.J.
they stole my Cherry Red "faded" SG special with crescent moon inlays (pretty rare) and my Gibson Les Paul Studio "wine red" battered and beaten.
they also stole Chris' Bird's Eye Maple Samick SAB 650 with only one bridge pick-up and one volume knob. the Neck pick-up and and all other knobs are missing. His Peavey Milestone Bass (not worth ANY MONEY, but it fuckin worked just fine) was also stolen. it was midnight blue but we stripped most of the paint and the strap lock was a water bottle cap. [Elizabeth Powell of Land of Talk]
Someone told me Land of Talk's van was broken into before or after their show at Maxwell's the other day. The above quote is Lizzie's unfortunate e-mail confirmation. See Land of Talk on tour, and keep an eye out for their equipment.

Indie rock, race, Arcade Fire, Will Butler & Sasha Frere

Arcade Fire

Will (not Win who is pictured above) Butler responded to Sasha Frere-Jones' article about race and indie rock.

Being as I am in the Arcade Fire, I prickle a little bit at your statement that “[i]f there is a trace of soul, blues, reggae, or funk in Arcade Fire, it must be philosophical; it certainly isn’t audible.” In a somewhat … I dunno, is it childish to respond to critics this way? Anyway. I’ve attached an MP3 with parts of our songs that I think steal quite blatantly from black people’s music from all over the globe. [Will Butler]

Largehearted Boy's Interesting CD Releases This Week

DOWNLOAD: Sally Shapiro - He Keeps Me Alive (MP3)

editor's note: My favorite release this week is Sally Shapiro. Also, I guess it comes out this week in the U.S. - not two weeks ago (that was Canada). Largehearted Boy....

Im Not There SoundtrackOf all the week's releases I have heard so far, the soundtrack to the Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There has held the most appeal. Featuring indie artists from Sonic Youth to Yo La Tengo to Jeff Tweedy, this could be my favorite compilation of the year.

The soundtrack to the Joy Division biopic Control is also out tomorrow, along with US releases of three of the band's remastered albums with bonus material, Closer, Still, and Unknown Pleasures.

Other notable reissues include two Tegan and Sara discs, If It Was You and So Jealous.

Of the remaining discs, I can strongly recommend Nicole Atkins' debut album, Neptune City and Who Goes There by Ian Ball (of Gomez).

Have I left anything noteworthy off the list? What new music releases can you recommend this week? What should I avoid? What are you picking up?

an insider's view of Webster Hall (during Jens Lekman)

a view from the inside @ Webster Hall - Oct 27, 2007 (CRED)
Jens Lekman

Have you ever noticed that little room behind the glass over the right of the stage (stage left) at Webster Hall? Have you ever wondered what those people were doing up there, who they were, if they were wearing clothes, or anything else wild and crazy like that? Have you ever wondered if they could see you staring up at them while they pushed their various body parts against the glass, blatantly smoked cigarettes, danced around, or just generally looked like they were having a good time while the real show was going on right below them? I wondered all of this during the Jens Lekman show at on Saturday night. Well, now thanks to the power of Flickr, we can get a glimpse of exactly what was going on up there on Saturday night....

Jens Lekman @ Webster Hall, MHOW & on a roof - pics

DOWNLOAD: Jens Lekman - You Are The Light (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: Jens Lekman - The Death of This Summer (a mix) (MP3)

So, I ended up seeing Jens Lekman AND Danzig on Saturday night. I found out on Saturday that Jens was going on at 9:00, and that Danzig wasn't starting until 10:30, and if it weren't for the fact that Nokia Theatre is all the way up in Times Square (which is also the busiest spot on Earth on a Saturday night), I probably would have seen all of both of them. Instead I just missed the first few songs of Danzig - not a big deal (but more about that later). Jens was so good.

Jens @ Webster Hall, Oct 27, 2007 (CRED)
Jens Lekman

Then I went to see Jens again on Sunday night at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. Unlike at Webster where Jens was playing with a full almost-all-female-dressed-in-white band, at Music Hall it was just him and a bongo player. I think Music Hall was my favorite of the two shows. At Music Hall he was more free to do what he wanted, the sound was amazing, and the songs sounded tight and sometimes a bit improvised (which makes sense since there were way less instruments). He played with some backing tracks and used a loop pedal, and though he was new to the pedal ("I'm no Andrew Bird"), I think he did a good job with it. He played two encores, covered a Red House Painters song, and one by Paul Simon. He sang a bit in Swedish (I think it was Swedish), and he was hilarious (as always - and as he was at Webster Hall). All in all Music Hall just felt more special.

After the show - as promised - he played some more on a nearby roof...

We went to the roof of 151 Kent Ave, around the corner from the venue. It was freezing, he played like 4 songs and said then his hands were too cold. Someone gave him some finger less gloves and he played two more songs. Then someone brought pizza! Ha ha and it was perfect cause the man was starving. He might have played one more song. [Eduardo]
Jens on a roof in Brooklyn - Oct 28, 2007 (CRED)
Jens Lekman

I wasn't one of the few at the roof show (didn't totally realize it was happening or I probably would have tried to go). Stupidly or smartly (you decide), I was instead enjoying the warmth and vegan-friendly tacos over at San Loco with a bunch of friends who had also just watched the show. I wouldn't even mention this part, but it's worth noting because as we were leaving San Loco around 1am (around an hour after the Music Hall show ended), a still-hungry and completely-alone Jens Lekman walked in the door to San Loco. "Great show!", we told him. He said "thanks", and asked us if this place was good. We said yes, and someone told him he should get the Guaco Loco. He said he would, and then we went home. More photos below....

At Webster Hall the whole band spun around like they were in a musical during the song that reminds me of the Love Boat. At Music Hall it was just the two of them, but they still spun....

Peter of Peter Bjorn & John was spotted at Webster Hall. Jared (Sparrow House) from Voxtrot and Zach from Beirut were both at Music Hall. Zach's Badabing label-mate Essie Jain opened the show at Music Hall. Zach and Essie's label-mate Patrick Cleandenim opened the show at Webster Hall. Silver Ages also opened at Webster, and they joined Jens on stage during the encore (as you can see in one of the pictures above).

After some interesting high jinks with the most over priced shuttle service I have ever experienced I arrived in the desert just in time to see The Shins. The Sin City concert is set in the beautiful desert abutting some beautiful mountains and the night weather was wonderful. The Shins put on a good show, I love their records but its difficult to get excited about the Shins in a large scale setting. I just don't find their music translates well to upping the decimal levels. [Analog Giant]

Porter Wagoner, RIP

DOWNLOAD: Porter Wagoner - Committed To Parkview (MP3)

Porter Wagoner

Porter Wagoner, a Grand Ole Opry institution and member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, died Sunday (Oct. 28) at 8:25 p.m. at Alive Hospice in Nashville.

Known as the Thin Man From West Plains, he was 80 and had been hospitalized since Oct. 15. An Opry spokesperson announced on Oct. 21 that Wagoner had been diagnosed with lung cancer. He was released to hospice care on Friday (Oct. 26).

An Opry star since 1957, the well-loved Wagoner had been the show's goodwill ambassador for many years and was photographed by fans millions of times as he clowned onstage in the flashy rhinestone suits that became one of his trademarks.

After suffering a near-fatal stomach aneurysm in 2006, he later recorded a new album, Wagonmaster, released earlier this year. He promoted the project by traveling to Hollywood in February to open a concert for Neko Case. In July, he opened the White Stripes' concert at New York's Madison Square Garden. Earlier this year, he celebrated his 50th anniversary as a member of the Opry. He last played the Opry on Sept. 29. [CMT]

Porter's last NYC show was at MSG - opening for the White Stripes.

Vegoose this weekend, online stream, DAFT PUNK!

Daft Punk

The Vegoose festival happens in Las Vegas this weekend. Daft Punk play Saturday night (they go on at 10:15pm), but I can't figure out if they'll be one of the performances streaming at AT&T Blue Room. Probably not, so at least those of us who can't be there have this thingee to keep us occupied....

LONDON - Daft Punk, the Parisian electro-house duo, have launched a widget to promote their new album, which links to pages on Facebook as well as other sites.

The widget, which can be downloaded to desktops and embedded on blogs and websites, allows users to preview tracks and buy the first single from the new live album -- 'Alive 2007'.

The widget also links to dedicated pages set up on YouTube, Facebook and MySpace. It also features a biography of the band, photos, videos and a registration form for a Daft Punk newsletter.

The move comes as an increasing number of bands make use of social networking opportunities and embrace the web as the main plank of their marketing activity.

British band Radiohead launched their latest studio album in a download-only format this month. 'In Rainbow' was only available to buy through Radiohead's website, although fans could order the album in CD format as part of a box set for £40.

Fans could choose to pay as much or as little as they wanted for the download version, in a move which dealt a huge blow to ailing high street retailers and record labels.

How to spell the title of Justice's new album

DOWNLOAD: Justice - Cross Medly Medly (MP3)

Cross

hello, in the event that you are putting the justice record on any year end lists we wanted to make sure you had the proper information because over the year a lot of reviews incorrectly listed the album title as "cross".

it should read:

Justice Ý (Downtown/ Vice / Ed Banger)

note: to get the cross-like symbol just hit your computer's option key and

This has been a public service announcement (that was sent out to critics today).

Morrissey asked KRISTEENYOUNG to leave the tour

KristeenYoung

This is the fourth post to touch on the subject now, and this is allegedly the true story - a message sent out by Kristeen Young:

My band, KRISTEENYOUNG, have been asked to leave the Morrissey tour.

Although I have been advised not to respond or issue a statement, my feelings are that I must. We have been asked to leave because of something I said on stage at The Hammerstein Ballroom, in New York City, this past Tuesday night. Unfortunately, the statement has been perceived as being profane (when, actually, one of the two words in question is a scientific term found in junior high, health class text books, and the other word, I feel most would agree, is lightweight slang) or defamatory. What I said was part of a thread of stage statements I made throughout our set. They were metaphorical and overstated to make an artistic point. The "offending" statement, in particular, was in no way a literal statement, and was very much in keeping with the tone of my writing in general. I reach for beauty and intelligence in my lyrics, but try to retain a bit of the everyday in them. Maybe the statement was a bit TOO everyday. Maybe I misjudged… but I meant no harm. I love Morrissey with all of my heart, soul, body, spirit, to the core of my existence and always will. These will be the only words I will ever write or speak on the subject ever again. Please don't ask for an interview or e-mail me with questions. Thanks to those who understand and who are brave enough to say so.

Vetiver NOT opening for Morrissey + Boxton tix for $20

random photo of Andy of Vetiver & Michael Lachowski of Pylon (VIA)
Vetiver & Pylon

(As just posted) Kristeen Young dropped off the Morrissey tour. Her voice is shot.

UPDATE: Minutes after I posted that Vetiver ARE opening for Morrissey, Vetiver sent out a second message. Now they are NOT opening for Morrissey....

Subject: ok...now this is just plainly ridiculous

hey everybody....

ok, so....basically we just got a call a half hour ago to find out that we in fact ARE NOT now opening for Morrissey after all. as it turns out, friends of his, a NYC band called "Girlfriend In A Coma" are now opening up the shows, and
Morrissey has apparently apologized and told us that he is "very, very sorry",
that he likes Vetiver very much, but that "it just doesn't make sense".

you're telling me!

so anyway, no hard feelings, we're all actually very excited to head home and get some rest, and i'm sure all of this will be for the best.

tour w/ Morrissey? we Never Had No One Ever!

love to you all,

Vetiver

Continued below.....

here is the whole original post when they were playing......

---

Vetiver just opened for the Shins at Terminal Five (twice). Now Vetiver has been asked to open the next four Morrissey shows. Vetiver sent out a cute message with more details, so here it is:

Subject: How the heck did this happen???

We're still trying to figure it out, but Vetiver has been invited to open up 4 shows for Morrissey a.k.a. "THE MOZ" in New York and Boston! I know, right? CRAZY!
We think there still may be tickets available online.

Shows are:
10/26 Hammerstein Ballroom - New York, NY
10/27 Hammerstein Ballroom - New York, NY
10/28 Hammerstein Ballroom - New York, NY
10/30 Orpheum Theater - Boston, MA

Thanks to everyone who came out to see us play with the Shins this past week. We had an awesome time! We'll try to post some pictures on our website, www.vetiverse.com.

Also, Andy will be playing guitar and singing with Devendra Banhart across Europe in November...check Devendra's MySpace for details.

Love,
Vetiver

There are still tickets online. In fact, now the Boston shows have been reduced to $20 (thx John!) (also).

Pylon have some NYC shows coming up too.

The Sex Pistols played the Roxy in LA

Sex Pistols

Anarchy and punk rock nostalgia reigned on the Sunset Strip on Thursday (Oct 25) as the Sex Pistols played a rare club show in Los Angeles to warm up for a brief reunion tour in Britain next month.

About 500 sweaty fans packed the Roxy Theatre for the private show, the group's first public performance in four years. The English foursome played almost all of their songs during the hour-long set, including their best-known tunes "Anarchy in the U.K." and "God Save the Queen."

The show was predictably a little rusty, with singer John Lydon (a.k.a. Johnny Rotten) forgetting the words to the first song of the night, "Holidays in the Sun." But he added some bonus lyrics along the way, notably "Paris Hilton, kiss my arse" in "Stepping Stone."

He also struggled with sound problems and the heat.

"It's hotter than (expletive) hell up here," said Lydon, 51, clad in a traditional Indian kurta, tartan pants and blue vest and guzzling red wine from the bottle.[Yahoo]

Yo La Tengo tickets selling, Brooklyn show on sale too

Yo La TengoFour of the eight Yo La Tengo Hanukkah shows are now sold out. Tickets are also on sale for a November 16th Yo La Tengo show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg (which some people remember going on sale and then disappearing from Ticketmaster a week or two ago - it was because they accidentaly announced it before their Long Island benefit show was sold out). I didn't go to that, but I did see them in Austin this summer.

Shout Out Louds, Rosebuds @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC - pics

Shout Out Louds & Rosebuds @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC - Oct 25, 2007 (CRED)
Shout Out Louds @ Bowery Ballroom

Bjorn (pre-DJing at Hiro Ballroom) and plenty of other Swedes were in attendance at the Shout Out Louds show at Bowery Ballroom last night (Oct 25). That's why it seemed strange that the only surprise special guest that joined the Swedish band on stage was one of their label-mates from North Carolina - The Rosebuds (a band who graced the very same stage just over a week ago). The Rosebuds didn't actually do very much - just some barely-noticeable backup singing on a song, and some dancing and shaking. It was a tease actually - I was hoping they'd grab the instruments, and bust into some songs of their own.

The show itself was okay - Shout Out Louds are good, but not super exciting. Emusic's review of Our Ill Wills sums up the main thing I got out of it....

If it does not already exist, let us now initiate a genre called Cure-core, a collection of bands who nick proudly and brazenly from the catalogue of R. Smith. Let us also quickly clarify: in no way is this a bad thing. Instead of taking cues from the smeared-mascara mope of early albums like Faith and Pornography — as so many before them have done — the Shout Out Louds shoot straight for 1987's Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. Their version of "Just Like Heaven" is called "Tonight I Have to Leave It" and it opens their second album on an impossible high. It's got the commanding stateliness of an overture, sweeping and sun-eyed and jubilant. [emusic]
Swedish week continues. More photos & stuff below..

DANZIG fell, hurt himself. show Saturday? or JENS Lekman?

DOWNLOAD: Danzig - Blood & Tears (MP3)

Jens LekmanDanzig

I want to go see Danzig at Nokia Theatre really bad on Saturday (Oct 27). I want to see Jens Lekman at Webster though really bad too. Neither is a once-in-a-lifetime situation - I see Danzig almost every time he's here, and I saw Jens this summer in Norway, and I can see Jens again on Sunday at Music Hall (but that's solo). hmmm.

Well, the decision might be made for me anyway. Danzig fell off the stage at a show in Baltimore Tuesday night, played in an arm sling Wednesday night in Philly, and completely cancelled tonight's show in Worcester, Massachusets (Oct 25). No word yet on whether he'll cancel any more shows. All tour dates, and a video of him getting back on the stage after falling, below....

Bon Iver played two BV shows + more 2007 Tour Dates

Bon Iver @ Pianos, NYC (BV CMJ) - Oct 17, 2007 (CRED)
Bon Iver @ Pianos

Bon Iver played two shows during CMJ - the first was at Bowery Ballroom on October 16th (the BV official showcase)...

...the first set we saw at CMJ '07 will probably be one of the very best: We learned Bon Iver is simply astounding. (We also learned it's pronounced "bone ee-vare.") [Stereogum]
... and the second was the BV day party on October 17th. He was the only artist who played two BrooklynVegan parties, and it was because when I first booked him I didn't want him to make the trip all the way to NYC just to play one show, especially if he was going to be the opener on a 7-band bill. If you came to see him/them at Pianos and were confused about when and where he was going on....
The members — three of them in this incarnation — were scheduled to play a free show at 5:30, upstairs at Piano’s. But if you had left someplace early (a meeting at the Midtown headquarters of a newspaper, for example) to rush downtown, you would have found you had plenty of time to spare. Thanks to the usual complexities of club scheduling (one passerby mentioned a particularly thorough Meat Puppets set), the show was moved to the main stage, and it didn’t start until sometime after 7. [NY Times]
...it was because we made a last minute decision to move him to the main stage after Celebration. We did that because there seemed to be time to do it (oops), and because the upstairs room didn't really have all the equipment Bon Iver needed. Luckily...
The show was worth the wait. (Not to mention the price.) [NY Times]
Thanks to everyone who waited around to see him. Coincedentally, he started at the same exact time as the night before - except the delay at that show was due to one of the bands not showing up.

Both shows were great, but the Bowery one was my favorite one - it was first, and the acoustics/sound/whatever was amazing (Justin even said so himself during the performance). Luckily then, (no offense to Pianos who have been amazing), Bowery is where Bon Iver is playing again next - he's opening for Elvis Perkins on December 7th. That show will be solo though (just Justin) - we'll see how that goes - I'm sure fine (though I liked that band!) Tickets are on sale. More tour dates and pictures below....

Bouncing Souls played Webster, playing 3 Jersey shows

I was admittedly a little bummed that my Bowery show was the same night as the Lifetime & The Bouncing Souls show....

Bouncing Souls @ Webster Hall, NY - Oct 16, 2007 (CRED)
Bouncing Souls @ Webster Hall

"Though both New Jersey bands had to deal with sub-par sound, it didn’t stop an anxious crowd from greeting the bands to open-arms and sing-alongs. It seemed like yesterday that Lifetime reunited, but the influential melodic hardcore band pounded the walls with plenty of fan favorites and a few surprises, too. The cavernous Webster Hall was a strange setting to see band that was obviously more at home in a living room." [CMJ]

DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES' FIRST-EVER CHRISTMAS ALBUM WILL BE HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS WITH SEPT. 25 RE-RELEASE

World's Best-Selling Musical Duo's Xmas Album Will Now Be Available at All Retailers Nationwide, Tour Launches Nov. 30 in Chicago

LOS ANGELES, Sept 20, 2007-Building upon the success of their first-ever holiday album, which debuted last year, Daryl Hall & John Oates will re-release Home for Christmas on Sept. 25 through their own U-Watch/DKE Records distributed by ICON Music Entertainment Services. The album, which was part of an exclusive arrangement with Trans World Entertainment, will now be available at all music retailers nationwide, as well as online, for the first time.

"We are so pleased that Home for Christmas can now be bought by our fans at all retail outlets," said Daryl Hall. "This assures that everyone who wants one will have access to purchasing it."

Produced by Daryl Hall and longtime collaborator T-Bone Wolk and Greg Bieck, Home for Christmas, with special cover art designed by Michael McCurdy, features the world's best-selling musical duo giving new and original life to traditional holiday anthems such as "The First Noel," "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," "The Christmas Song," "Mary Had a Baby," "O Holy Night" and a re-recording of "Jingle Bell Rock," a promo-only single that was a hit for the duo for many years. Daryl and John each wrote one original song for the collection, the title track "Home For Christmas and "No Child Should Ever Cry on Christmas."

"It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" reached #1 on Billboard's Christmas chart last year, while critics were effusive in their praise of the album.

"I find my ideas of beauty infinitely expanded," said Blogcritics.com reviewer Michael Jones about Home for Christmas. "That is how my heart feels about it. You will never regret purchasing this."

All Music Guide's Stephen Thomas Erlewine raved: "The result is the rare holiday album that feels familiar yet fresh, and there's enough variety here to make this a Christmas record that will hold up well over the years."

Daryl Hall and John Oates will launch a tour to promote the album, starting Nov. 30 at Audiotrium Theatre in Chicago. Other dates include Detroit's Fox Theatre (12/1), Columbus, OH's Palace Theatre (12/3), Cleveland's State Theatre (12/5), Asbury Park's Paramount Theatre (12/7), Boston's Orpheum Theatre (12/8), Hershey, PA's Theatre (12/10), New York City's Beacon Theatre (12/12), Connecticut's Foxwoods Theatre (12/14-15) and Philadelphia's Kimmel Center (12/17).

Roseland, Hammerstein Ballroom, few shows, Moonies

(not) Rodrigo y Gabriela @ Roseland Ballroom, NYC - Oct 19, 2007 (CRED)
Rodrigo y Gabriela @ Roseland

Spoon (and friends) @ Roseland Ballroom, NYC - Oct 20, 2007 (CRED)
Spoon @ Roseland

Back in August I asked, "why do Hammerstein and Roseland have so few shows a year?". In response, I received the following letter (from someone who would like to stay anonymous)....

From "Anonymous":

Hey there,

SO I used to occasionally work at both of these venues. Here's what I do know, and it may not be much, as to why neither Roseland or Hammerstein regularly schedule things.

Apparently Roseland's owners are HUGE flakes. They're very mysterious with their staff, always hesitant to make schedules in advance. It just seemed really poorly managed. They were cheap bastards, and rather than committing even nominal amounts of money towards simple upgrades, they'd just constantly threaten and toy with the idea of selling it. I don't know why they just didn't give up. Apparently they've been doing this for YEARS--when it comes time to book some consecutive shows, they get cold feet and want to sell. Then when it's in "prime" show season and all their competition (see Hammerstein) are pumping out show after show, they get the spirit in them to start booking. They do however do a bunch of private corporate events that are not publicized.

Hammerstein is owned by the Moonies, who also own the New Yorker hotel that the venue is attached to. From what I can tell, the Ballroom just doesn't seem to be a huge priority to management. I guess it doesn't gross as much revenue as the hotel...DUH, they never book regularly. But again, it seems like once a year or so they do battle with Roseland with several shows in consecutive weeks.

Both places suck for different reasons. I think the sound quality at Hammerstein is awful. Also, the bathrooms are very inconveniently located downstairs. Because of the nightmare it is of getting from the front of the venue, pushing all the way to the back, I've taken to just drinking straight Jack when I'm there. Beer or "on the rocks" lead to wasted bladder space. One of the last times I was there was for a Black Crowes show, and they "fans" there were total assholes. I was by myself, and have never had problems making "friends" at shows, until that night. And I'm NO mutant.

Roseland's sound quality is better, but only if you're centered. If you can sit in the "VIP" section upstairs, you're in great shape. Maybe I'm just nostalgic, as the first time I saw Radiohead was there on the Bends tour.
Down play Roseland Ballroom tonight.

Sufjan Stevens The BQE, Part 6 on WNYC (video)

Bridget St John, David Garland, Dave Deporis (CRED)
David Garland and friends

This Sunday, Oct. 28, Sufjan Stevens will premier a couple pieces from his new orchestral project "The BQE" on David Garland's radio show Spinning On Air. That'll be heard Oct. 28, 7- 8 pm on WNYC-FM 93.9 in New York City, and online. David will also interview Sufjan. David also threw a preview up on YouTube....

Oct. 28, 2007, 7-8 pm, Spinning On Air with David Garland Sufjan Stevens and his Orchestra ride the BQE

Songwriter Sufjan Stevens has always shown a fascination with orchestral color and sound in his recordings, and his popular albums of songs usually include some purely instrumental pieces. Now he brings an orchestra of eleven players into the WNYC Studio for a live performance of pieces from his new instrumental composition "The BQE." Sufjan talks with host David Garland about the music and the ideas behind it, which include the story of the Brooklyn Queens Expressway, the consequences of urban planning, and hula hoops. This music, scheduled for sold-out performances in November in the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival, receives its premier on Spinning On Air!

I wonder if Sufjan sings at all in the BQE thing.

David Garland recently celebrated 20 years on the air at Joe's Pub. There are pictures, and you can listen to it.

See what else is coming up at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Lykke LiPeter Bjorn and John, Shout Out Louds, and Lykke Li are all from Sweden. Shout Out Louds play Bowery Ballroom in NYC tonight (Oct 25), Music Hall of Williamsburg tomorrow, Maxwell's on Saturday, and then they continue their North American tour (with Johnossi - also from Sweden). Björn Yttling (Bjorn) produced Our Ill Wills - the new Shout Out Louds record out on Merge. 21-year old Lykke Li (real name = Lykke Zahrisson) sings the girl parts on that record. Lykke Li just came out with her own EP as well. It was also produced by Bjorn. Bjorn and Lykke are here in NYC working on her full length album - which also explains part of the reason Peter and Bjorn have been around town. Lykke Li was the girl singing the the girl part on "Young Folks" at the CMJ show at Galapagos. Lykke Li is playing her own two shows - a free one at Knitting Factory on October 29th, and a not-free one at Mercury Lounge the next day. Bjorn will probably be at those shows to help her out. Maybe Bjorn and Lykke will also both be at the three NYC-area Shout Out Louds shows to help them out too. Lykke and the Shout Out Louds tour Europe together in November and December. One further connection all these artists have: Bud Fox manages Shout Out Louds, Johnossi, Lykke Li, El Perro Del Mar, and Bjorn. Peter plays Joe's Pub on November 19th. Who knows where the hell John is.

In related news, Sweden's Jens Lekman is also playing two shows this weekend.

Dan (CRED)
Dan Bejar

But Neko is to the New Pornographers' array of harmonizing vocalists what a good concertmaster is to an orchestral string section, or a good lead trumpet player is to a big band -- she is the point, the focus of the sound; she sets the time and the phrasing and the rest of it by being so strong up top that everyone else can't help but fall into place. And she does this even when things get totally fucked up........The other highlight was the appearance of part-time Pornographer Dan Bejar, who usually contributes three or four tunes to each record but almost never tours with them. The indie rock blogosphere clearly favors Bejar -- who plays the charismatic, idiosyncratic louche -- over Carl Newman, the dependable, somewhat dorky pop craftsman. As an unreconstructed dork, I know where my allegiances lie, but I also really like the contrast between the impeccable Newman songs and the looser, weirder Bejar songs..... "Wildfires Disrupt SoCal Concert Biz"

sucks
Wildfires

"At deadline, Los Angeles-based concert promoters AEG Live (and subsidiary Goldenvoice) and Nederlander Concerts hadn't reported any concert cancellations in Southern California. But the wind-driven blazes, which have already forced a reported half-million people to evacuate their homes, have caused Live Nation to cancel or postpone most concerts scheduled for this week, according to company officials.........a Jesus and Mary Chain gig at San Diego's 4th & B today has been cancelled. Ticket refunds for the latter are available at point of purchase." [Billboard]

Concert cancellations seem trivial in the scheme of things, but I guess each industry has to look at things from their own point of view, and the one we're interested around here (you and I) is music.

Lance Hahn (J Church), RIP

lots of sad news lately...

Lance HahnLance Hahn

Lance Hahn, the iconic Austin-based frontman for legendary punk band J Church, passed away yesterday (Oct. 21) from complications arising from kidney disease. His death came on the heels of a J Church/Cringer tribute/benefit album put together by several indie labels to raise money to help Hahn—who had no health insurance—pay his medical bills. [Harp]

The Hook - not totally closed just yet

Someone from The Hook got in touch to let me know that they're not going out just like that. There will be one final party at the closing venue on October 27th, and strangely - it will be a Halloween party called "The Death of Astroland" - "a laying rest of the Coney Island we all once knew". So basically the final party at the Red Hook venue will be in honor of the closing of Astroland in Coney Island. I guess, why not? More details below....

The Hook

THE DEATH OF ASTROLAND...a laying rest of the Coney Island we all once knew...

There is going to be free beer and free food.

There is going to be a ball pit (Yes, like the kind they have in Chuck E. Cheese but for adults).

There is going to be free skee ball.

There is going to be a highstriker (For those of you who don't know what a highstriker is, it's that stupid game where you hit a thing with a hammer and the ball flies up and hits the bell).

There is going to be a paintball alley (alla "SHOOT THE FREEK"). --i misspelled freak on purpose.

There is going to be pin the beard on the fat lady.

There will be live bands, a burlesque show, and live DJ music ALL NIGHT LONG.

And much, much more!

The Hook

Dave Gahan played the Apple Store, stream his album

by James Minor

Dave Gahan @ the Apple Store

Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan played a short solo set at the SoHo Apple store in NYC on Tuesday (Oct 23). Not surprisingly, it was being recorded for an iTunes exclusive digital release. People started lining up Monday night to get in, and about 85 of them did. My expectations were low - I mean it's an Apple store, but when Gahan and his band finally came out, it was flooring. Gahan's solo record Hourglass was released the same day (stream it at AOL), and all the material he played was pulled from that. The sound was great, and Gahan put just as much energy into it as any arena show - it even looked like he was having fun despite the semi-awkward lighting.

I love the new record, and it comes across great live - with "Saw Something", the Superpitcher- esque "Endless", and the screaming "Deeper + Deeper" being personal highlights. Fingers crossed for a real tour.

More pics, and the setlist, below...

Peter & Bjorn & ?? @ Galapagos, Brooklyn, NYC - Oct 20, 2007 (CRED)
Peter and Bjorn

Did anyone check out Peter and Bjorn @ Galapagos Saturday night? At first I was confused by the missing member, but I see from the pictures that it just meant they had a different drummer - which is not the first time that happened, but last time they played without John they just left their name the same.

I didn't go to Galapagos (obviously), but I did see Peter & Bjorn at Bowery Ballroom a few nights earlier - they were both in the audience watching Dan Deacon and Deerhunter, and they both also stayed all the way to the end.

Peter is playing without John & without Bjorn @ Joe's Pub in NYC on November 19.

Peter writes a lot of songs - too many to fit in the prospect of just one band with three songwriters so in his spare time he has recorded a solo album that bears some kinship with Paul Simon, Tim Hardin, Brian Eno, John Cale, Caetano Veloso, Robyn Hitchcock, The Go-Betweens and maybe The Shins’ acoustic ballads. Peter will mostly play by his lonesome, but may invite guests or have some special treats up his sleeve. Join him at Joe’s Pub for his raw, singular set. [Joe's Pub]
Tickets are at Joe's site.

Like the DeathSet, Team Robespierre are a young band I love. And like The DeathSet, Team Robespierre have played a bunch of Todd P shows, and have been photographed plenty of times by Tod Seelie. One such show was the Todd P Impose showcase that Dan Deacon, The Deathset and Team Robespierre played together at Silent Barn in Brooklyn on October 16th. It was the night before the BrooklynVegan day party at Pianos (in Manhattan) that TD & TR both also played. Yes, the two bands have a lot in common, but unlike The DeathSet (who are from Baltimore like Dan Deacon), Team Robespierre are from right here in Brooklyn.

It was daytime, and there was minimal crowd surfing, but the show at Pianos still rocked. hard. Like the DeathSet who played later on (but more on the stage instead of the middle of the room). Later that night TR also played the Oh My Rockness showcase at Knitting Factory. Miss Modernage was there. Here's a pic from the Brooklyn Silent Barn show....

"Radiohead Said to Shun Major Labels in Next Deal"

DOWNLOAD: Radiohead - How I Made My Millions (MP3)

Rainbow"The band is expected to market the album internationally through the British label XL Recordings....Side One, a fledgling label being spun off from Mr. Capshaw’s management company, Red Light, would release the album domestically in concert with another of Mr. Capshaw’s companies, ATO Records." In related news, Paul Oakenfold remixed a Radiohead song for his new album, and Radiohead plan to tour in 2008.

Klaus Kinski's Comedy Canon (10/23/07)

David Cross @ UCB Theater, NYC - Oct 19, 2007 (CRED)
David Cross @ UCB

Some Fred Armisen news y'all. Drag City Records has finally released Fred Armisen Presents Jens Hanneman: Complicated Drumming Techinque. I mentioned this DVD in a previous Canon, but have a look at the trailer at the end of this post. Fred will be at Sound Fix Records in Brooklyn on October 27th @ 8:00pm - performing, taking questions, and signing the DVD.

In the time that has elapsed since my last Canon, not only was the Sarah Silverman Program Season 1 DVD released, but the second season began airing on Comedy Central. So far, season two has been phenomenal and I just can't get enough of Jay Johnston, Brian Posehn, and Steve Agee's characters. In honor of a stellar-so-far Season 2, we're having a contest! To win, simply email BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (subject: Silverman!). A grand prize winner will receive a shirt, season 1 DVD, and a condom. Two runners up will get the season 1 DVD. Don't forget, Season 2 airs Wed. nights at 10:30 pm EST on Comedy Central.

Oh, and don't forget to see Sarah Silverman, Todd Barry, and Doug Benson at Carnegie Hall as part of the New York Comedy Festival.

Some Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter news too! Michael Ian Black released a CD on September 25th entitled I'm A Wonderful Man. Michael Showater recorded a CD at Union Hall back in July for JDub Records. It doesn't come out until November, but it's called Sandwiches and Cats and you can totally pre-order it right this very second. The two Michaels will also be touring together! Dates below.

Nick Swardson released a CD too! Check it out.

MORE COMEDY BELOW.........

Comedy wunderkind Bobby Tisdale has a new weekly shin-dig happening out in Brookyln called Bingo Night @ The Black Rabbit. The show happens every Sunday in Greenpoint at the Black Rabbit (Greenpoint Ave b/t Manhattan Ave & Franklin). Befriend him on myspace for weekly announcements as to what sort of craziness you can expect at upcoming bingo nights!

Comix has opened a second room at their club called Ochi's Lounge. Trying to bring 'indie' comedy to a cleaner, more professional room, Ochi's has a 1-item minimum and no cover. Not a bad deal and probably worth a look, though I tend to prefer my clubs a bit on the filthy side.

Keep checking the Human Giant Production Diary! As they continue to shoot season two, they continue to blog about it. GREAT stuff.

Speaking of video diaries, The Comedians of Comedy have a tour diary being hosted by Superdeluxe. Check it Out

My buddy Ben has been an interviewing machine lately. Here's some of his most recent dialogues

The Hook, RIP

(photo via)
Red Hook

Not many people realized the The Hook even existed, and not many people even realize that out-of-the-way Red Hook music venue went out of business earlier this month. The Hook was home to Clevelend Fest, No Fun Fest, a Moldy Peaches reunion, and even the occasional indie show. It was just too hard to get to - in a section of Brooklyn with a bad reputation, and without a subway. At least they tried. RIP.

Sly & the Family Stone are playing NYC

Sly @ The Grammys in 2006
Sly Stone @ The Grammys

Sly & the Family Stone was an American funk, soul and rock band from San Francisco, California. Active from 1966[1] to 1983, the band was pivotal in the development of soul, funk, and psychedelic music. Headed by singer, songwriter, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist Sly Stone, and containing several of his family members and friends, the band was the first major American rock band to have an integrated lineup in both race and gender. [Wikipedia]
You can keep reading the Wikipedia entry for more of their history since then, but more importantly - what have Sly and his Family Stone been up to recently? Well, in 2006 Sly made a rare appearance at the Grammys.
Reclusive funk music pioneer Sly Stone stole the show in bizarre fashion at the Grammy Awards on Wednesday, surprising everyone by making his first major public appearance in almost 13 years. [Reuters]
And even more recently (as you can see from their official website), S&TFS re-released their entire catalog, and came out with a new "Best Of" album this summer. Along with that came an interview in Vanity Fair, a 9.5 on Pitchfork, and a short European tour. How did that go? Well,...
...After spending only 20 minutes on stage at the Montreux Jazz festival in Switzerland last week, the 64-year-old musician performed only four and half songs during his latest gig in the southern French city of Nice.

True to his reputation as an unpredictable, combustible character, he walked off stage after 10 minutes leaving his backing band, known as the Family Stone, to keep the audience entertained.

Half and hour later, the brooding singer, hidden behind big sunglasses and baseball cap, reappeared to sing for another 10 minutes before disappearing for the final time. [the raw story - July 21, 2007]

You get the picture. What next?

Sly and The Family Stone are playing BB King's in NYC on December 7, 2007 - their first NYC show in 33 years (or so I'm told). There's going to be a presale on Friday, and a public sale next week. Stay tuned.

Mo Pitkins, RIP

Mo Pitkins, Sunday October 21, 2007
Mo Pitkins

On Sunday night, Mo Pitkins swaggered off into the sunset with a 5-hour finale that captured the charm and the camraderie the venue had always been searching for. "Smoke 'em if you got 'em," announced the emcee, Wonder-Woman clad Seth Herzog, "because there's nothing left to lose." And so people did. The crowded audience of artists, performers, trendsetters, and friends soaked in the vibe for one last time. [The Apiary]
and...
The distinctive Cuban Reuben sandwiches already a memory, patrons and performers packed Mo Pitkin’s House of Satisfaction Sunday night to bid farewell to the venue that was officially shuttered on Saturday. The 150 final revelers—including Moby and Penny Arcade—who populated the sidewalk, downstairs bar and dining room at the party’s high point seemed sad but resigned to the fact that the nostalgia palace would close after only a two-year run on Avenue A. [Village Voice]
Mo's has a page up full of condolence letters, like this one...
Sorry to hear that Mo's is closing. I am very happy that I will get to do two last shows there. I have enjoyed doing many shows upstairs there for the last couple of years. The vibe reminded me of the old fez which as we know also closed. I am getting tired of all the good clubs closing. People are just not coming out to see live music the way they used to. Back in the late 90's, early 2000's when I worked with The Strokes shows were packed and every band was friendly with each other. Thanks again for all the shows you helped me get at Mo's.
Take Care, Kerri
RIP

Yeasayer @ R Bar, NYC (BV CMJ) + more Tour Dates

DOWNLOAD: Yeasayer - 2080 (MP3)

Yeasayer @ R Bar, NYC (BV CMJ) - Oct 19, 2007 (CRED - Rebecca Smeyne)
Yeasayer @ R Bar

If you've read any reviews of my Friday show at R Bar, you know three things for sure: the Black Kids played, R Bar has stripper poles, and R Bar was packed.

Every place Black Kids played during the 2007 CMJ Music Marathon was mobbed. That’s not bad for a band that is still giving away its four recorded songs on its MySpace page, myspace.com/blackkidsrock. Black Kids were, it’s true, playing small places like the R Bar on the Bowery, where they shared the stage with a pair of stripper poles, and the Annex, where an amp gave out during their first song. [NY Times]
Most of those reviewers weren't there at noon when iLiKETRAiNS went on of course - at that time it was not packed (maybe 30 people?) (which is too bad because the UK band is really good live). For Brooklyn's Yeasayer though, it was also PACKED. This had in part to do with the fact that people were there to see Yeasayer...
One of the primary reasons I went to the BV party was to see Yeasayer, who my pals at Pitchfork had been talking up all week, with weird allusions to Vampire Weekend and 4AD; you could absolutely say I was intrigued. [17dots]
,and this in part had to do with the fact that Yeasayer went on right before Black Kids. Regardless, Yeasayer rocked the house.....
As much as I want to despise them, however, I don't. Songs like "2080" and "Sunrise" are kind of undeniable singles, they nail the harmonies (sometimes four-part) and the band are engaging performers." [Sound Bites]
He wants to hate them because he says they are hippies. HOAS adds,
There's both something legitimately good about this band, and a legitimate hesitancy to go nuts over them. The Fleetwood Mac + World Music thing is a good starting-point blurb, but the way the band incorporates its World rhythms and riffs is less appropriative than explorative; the songs where they go New Wave over (electronic) Native American beats keep the thing from settling into overthought mush. [heartonastick]
This band obviously has a lot of influences....
Wow. I’m not even sure how to describe their sound except to say that at one or many points throughout their 5-song set I heard the following elements: Men at Work, Annie Lennox, Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Joy Division, AND for some reason that only makes sense in my head and I know I will get crucified for this…wait for it…an inconceivably tasteful Nickelback in the hook for “Final Path.” And I LOVED it. Yeesh. [Ear Farm]
Nickelback....maybe. Let's just all agree that they don't sound like grunge...
Yeasayer don't sound anything remotely like grunge; their epic, cavernous sound relies too much on slippery crystalline guitar-lines and huge, thunking offbeats. More than anything else, their haunted keyboards and vague but fully integrated African influences recall Peter Gabriel by way of TV on the Radio, but their cascading thrum really doesn't sound like anything else I've heard. Still, I like the grunge parallel, if only because this band evinces the sort of all-consuming seriousness and desperation that those first-wave grunge bands had. [Village Voice]
Or to put it another way...
in short, though, yeasayer were fucking fantastic. [mr mammoth]
Check out an interview with the band at KEXP, and live videos (also from CMJ) at KEXP too. Download some live MP3s at Daytrotter.

Yeasayer are having a record release "dance party" at Glasslands in Brooklyn tonight (Oct 23, 2007), but according to everyone in the comments (and someone from the band), they are not actually playing.

They also have an upcoming Bowery Ballroom show that they mentioned at their last Cake Shop show, but it's still not listed on their tour dates, which are below....

Morrissey began his 5-night stand at Hammerstein Ballroom on Monday night with an energetic and powerful performance. Clearly understanding the disappointment at his cancellation of the June concert, Morrissey said “our little donkey finally made it to New York City, thanks for your patience, thanks for waiting” after the third number. He proceeded to deliver a set tight with recent numbers and weighed heavy on the back end with Smiths favorites, including the rare “Death of a Disco Dancer” from Strangeways. [NYCTaper taped it]

Foals @ BrooklynVegan show @ Pianos

The set I witnessed by Foals at Pianos on Saturday (Oct 20, 2007) was by far one of the highlights of my CMJ this year. The show was part of the free afternoon party I threw there, and seeing Foals back-to-back with the Maccabees made it even better.

Foals were also the first band of that day that really packed the room (probably partly because they were playing 2nd-to-last at a party that started at noon). And though obviously derivative of something or other (who isn't?), I now know that they don't just "sound like Bloc Party". They are awesome in their own way, and extremely tight. In fact, unlike their older recorded stuff, their live show didn't remind me that much of Bloc Party at all - except that both bands are British, are good, and might be classified as "dance punk".

Foals are a dance-punk band from Oxford. The five-piece group are known through extensive live playing around Great Britain for its mix of indie with elements from techno and math rock. [Wikipedia]
Are they signed to Sub Pop? Probably, but we'll have to wait to find out. Later that night Foals played with Le Loup, The Brunettes, and Band of Horses at Bowery Ballroom (it was the Sub Pop/Hardly Art showcase).

NME reviewed the Pianos show, and Leia Jospe was in the house to snap some photos - those are the ones you see in this post. More below....

"Art Goblins didn’t play their 9:15pm set because Eddie missed his flight and arrived to the venue late. When presented with the fact that they may not play, they decided to play an semi-plugged in set in the Music Hall lobby." [Metromix]

"Art Goblins missed their opening set but treated the crowd to a short impromptu set of Art Brut songs as everyone was leaving. With just an amp in the corner of the lobby and a screaming Eddie Argos, it was the perfect way to close out CMJ. We walked home and slept for 24 hours." [Obscene NYC]

Band of Horses @ Blender Theatre

Band of Horses played three shows (that I know of) this CMJ. One was their official CMJ showcase at Bowery Ballroom. One was a small in-studio session for KEXP. The other was at Blender Theatre - part of Blender Magazine's late-night CMJ party series. If NYC had a Wal Mart, maybe they would have played one in there too. Jefferson snapped the above and below pics at the Blender party.

Kill Rock Stars -- Xiu Xiu, Mary Timony, Marnie Stern, Mika Miko -- @ Gramercy Theatre, NYC (CMJ)

Xiu Xiu @ Blender/Gramercy Theatre, NYC - Oct 17, 2007
Xiu Xiu

Xiu Xiu, The Mary Timony Band, Marnie Stern, and Mika Miko each played sets at the Gramercy Theatre in NYC on Wednesday night for the Kill Rock Stars 2007 CMJ showcase. Edwina Hay took some pictures. M, M, M, More below....

Marnie Stern...

Marnie Stern

Marnie Stern kicked off the night with a furious yet playful set of songs. She’s a rare bird: a great guitarist and charismatic frontwoman. The pointed melodies and tribal pulse of her music recalled not just one of her major influences, Sleater-Kinney, but also the earliest, most dangerous-sounding songs from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs — passed down, probably, from the No Wave inspirations Stern and the YYYs share. [Allmusic]
Mika Miko...

Mika Miko

Mika Miko

Mika Miko

Mika Miko

Mika Miko

Mika Miko are, along with Marnie Stern, part of a new generation of Kill Rock Stars, but these five ladies take their KRS influences right back to the source with messy, energetic riot grrl punk rock. Brisk, invigorating, and retaining a playing-around-in-Mom’s-basement carelessness also projected through the adding-nothing-but-character stage banter. [Impose]
Mary Timony...

Mary Timony

Mary Timony

Mary Timony

Marnie Stern was originally supposed to be performing in this time slot. I'm still not sure exactly what happened, but whatever. Washington, D.C.-born Mary Timony, formerly of Boston noise-pop outfit Helium, is an artist I've long respected more than listened to, and if her set lacked the fret-tapping pyrotechnics of Stern, the muso in me could still geek out over her jarring tunings and sudden rhythm changes. [Pitchfork]
Xiu Xiu...

Xiu Xiu

Xiu Xiu

Under shafts of multi colored lights, against a backdrop of trippy projections, not once did Stewart crack a smile, even when giving props to his support acts or declaring his love for his label. But then, Xiu Xiu’s music is dark stuff, generally borne of despair and indignation about the state of Stewart’s world, or the one around all of us. It’s enough to make anyone a serious guy. There are delicate, ambient moments and blistering noise-filled ones. For the better part of an hour, the band on stage at the Gramercy was savage, primal, angst-filled, foreboding, sometimes unsettling, but never tedious and often captivating. Thanks to KRS and CMJ for including in their ranks a band as compelling as Xiu Xiu. [John Norris for MTV]
Mika Miko also played an awesome set at the BrooklynVegan party @ R Bar on Friday.

some RICHARD HAWLEY videos & stuff

Richard Hawley

Tix are still on sale for Hawley's Bowery show. I'm serious...

Serious

Official video for 'Serious' by Richard Hawley. taken from the album Lady's Bridge. Directed By Shane Meadows.
Richard Hawley - Serious: Making The Video
Ever since venturing out on his own as a solo artist after years of work as a supporting musician, Richard Hawley has, over the course of five full-length albums, brought simple, sincere songwriting back to an overly cynical and trite pop music world, the singer-songwriter looking as out of place among the Arctic Monkeys, Art Bruts, and Girls Alouds of the world as a humble suitcase style 45 RPM record player in a room full of iPod nanos. After an extended period of slowly building a core group of admirers, from indie rock fans to admirers of vintage 1960s UK pop music, to bored critics looking for anything better than the latest bunch of Williamsburg freak-folkers, Hawley’s warm, unassuming music found its way to a considerably larger audience in his home country, thanks in large part to the aggressive release of six singles by label Mute Records, and especially his nomination for the 2006 Mercury Prize. [Popmatters]
And here's the official video for "Tonight The Streets Are Ours" (the song he plays acoustic in the video at the top of this post).......

Yo La Tengo will play 8 Hanukkah shows this year

Hanukkah

Hey everybody,

Dateline: Hoboken. It's official. For the fifth time in the last seven years, Yo La Tengo will lift their collective voices in song to commemorate the eight days of Hanukkah. The concerts will once again take place at Maxwell's in Hoboken, beginning December 4 and concluding on December 11.

As in the past, each show will begin with an opening band, followed by some comedy, and then a Yo La Tengo set. And perhaps more. That's all we're going to tell you, so don't ask who's playing. We can guarantee that it'll be great, and that no matter what night you're there, you'll wish you had come another night instead. That's just the way you are; there's nothing we can do about that.

continued below....

Doors will open at 8 pm each night, with the show starting promptly at 8:30, except for Friday and Saturday December 7-8, which will be 8:30 doors, 9:00 show.

Tickets will be $30 each, and will go on sale this United Nations Day at noon, eastern time. (That's Wednesday, October 24 for all you U.N. bashers out there.) The shows will be benefits, for charities to be named later, to borrow a phrase from the sports section. To purchase tickets online, go to ticketweb.com. If that doesn't work, go the Maxwell's site and follow the instructions there. Advance tickets will also be sold at Tunes in Hoboken and Other Music in New York.

If you're looking for a place to stay, we can't help you, but that won't stop us from trying. A couple of hotels a little off the beaten track are the Palace Hotel in North Bergen, NJ and the Red Roof Inn in Secaucus, NJ.

We've never stayed at either of them, so cannot vouch for them, but we can tell you that they are less expensive than most of your New York City and Jersey City options. (Hoboken, though boasting three—that's right, three—Dunkin' Donuts, has no hotels.)

Hope to see you there!

-- Georgia, Ira and James

They sadly took last year off.

Yo La Tengo is also playing Cornell in Ithaca with Broken Social Scene (Kevin Drew) on Novbember 11th.

(thx William!)

Trail of Dead, Yo Majesty & Thunderheist @ Highline Ballroom

by Klaus Kinski

DOWNLOAD: Trail of Dead - Worlds Apart (MP3)

Trail of Dead (CRED)
Trail of Dead @ highline Ballroom

On Thursday (Oct 18, 2007) I (Klaus) went to the Highline Ballroom for the first time to check out the Thunderheist/Yo Majesty/Trail of Dead/Islands/Enon/The Octopus Project CMJ showcase. Unfortunately I was only able to stay for Thunderheist, Yo Majesty, and Trail of Dead but these three acts packed such a punch that I left very satisfied.

Thunderheist (CRED)
Thunderheist @ highline Ballroom

I have to start by mentioning that I've never been to the Highline, but I was pretty impressed with the quality of the sound and the sightlines. It did have an all-too-polished, almost sterile look and the numerous security guards on hand made it feel a bit confined, but overall I dug the place. Thunderheist was up first at 8pm sharp and blasted through an absolutely phenominal set to an unfortunately empty and impotent room. As an old fart, I'm not prone to too much movement at shows these days, but this two-piece's agressive vocals, overwhelming stage presence, and superb beats almost had me moving. There was a 5-minute period in their set when I felt that the wind had been taken from their sails, and I thought they might be one of these bands that tend to start strong and fizzle out. However, they cranked it right back up and ended the set with a bang.

Yo Majesty (CRED)
Yo Majesty @ highline Ballroom

Next up was Tampa's Yo Majesty and they absolutely blew my mind. The DJ kicked things off solo, spinning a fantastic up-tempo beat to get the crowd in the mood for what was about to begin. Then Shunda K & Jwl. B came out and tore into a set that was explosive, aggressive, and relentless. By this time, the room had filled up a lot and Yo Majesty completely had us all in their power. And as has happened in the past, toplessness ensued. I cannot recommend them enough; see them live, buy their records, download their tunes, just do yourself a favor and acquaint yourself with them. I am so glad I did.

The third and final band up was Trail of Dead. People nowadays seem sort of wishy-washy about how they feel about Trail of Dead. Some people think they've still got it, others think they're not as good as they used to be. But last night's set of anthemic, powerful tunes put them back on my list of bands one must see live. In addition to being totally on top of their game, they were so goddamned loud my shoes came untied.

----

RELATED: Islands played this show and the BrooklynVegan party at R Bar. Yo Majesty didn't play R Bar, but did play Irving Plaza the next day. Thunderheist played the BrooklynVegan afterparty at 205 on Saturday night. Trail of Dead play Bowery Ballroom on November 23.

Lucky Dube, RIP --- (5 men arrested)

Lucky Dube

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (CNN) -- Five men have been arrested and charged with murder over the shooting of reggae legend Lucky Dube, Johannesburg police said Monday.

The men were arrested Sunday in an area east of Johannesburg and will appear in court on Tuesday, police spokesman Eugene Opperman said.

Along with murder, Opperman said the men were charged with possession of stolen property, a charge unrelated to Dube's death. Opperman said police seized two stolen firearms and four vehicles, including the one used on the night Dube was shot.

The 43-year-old musician was killed Thursday night as a hijacker tried to steal his car, his record company said. Dube was dropping his children off at a relative's house at the time; he attempted to escape but died almost instantly from his wounds, Gallo Record Company said. [CNN]

Porter Wagoner Diagnosed with Lung Cancer

Porter WagonerPorter Wagoner

He's a legend of the Grand Old Opry and one of country music's rhinestone and Rock-A-Billy survivors. But tonight, friends and family are asking for prayers, for Porter Wagoner. His publicist announced today that Wagoner is suffering from lung cancer and he remains hospitalized in Nashville. Doctors describe his condition as serious.

Known for his rhinestone stage outfits, Wagoner helped launch the career of Dolly Parton when he hired her as his duet partner in 1967. Last year he spent two weeks in the hospital after suffering a stomach aneurysm, but he recovered and in May, celebrated 50 years on the Opry. In June, he released a new CD called Wagonmaster. Over the summer he opened a concert for the White Stripes at Madison Square Garden [WVLT]

As usual, I fell behind and never got to fully write about how excited I am for the lineup upstairs at Pianos this afternoon (free - starts @ noon, @ Pianos, BrooklynVegan party). So real quick: You've got singer-songwriter/GNR cover band member Dave Godowsky opening up the show - his ony area appearance. Following him is Orba Squara, who among other things, is known for the song in the iPhone commercial. Then Marla Hansen of Sufjan/National/Kanye fame. Then Scott Matthew - known for having songs in soundtracks like Shortbus & Ghost in the Shell - he has a beautiful, beautiful voice. Then JULIA KENT - an amazing, solo cello player that is gaining popularity in Europe, and who also happens to be a member of Antony & The Johnsons, and who was in Rasputina, etc, etc... Then DOVEMAN. Then Tim Bracy of the Mendoza Line (who was supposed to play later). Then Craig Wedren - formerly of Shudder to Think. Then finally Erik Friedlander (who was supposed to play earlier) - "now one of the world's top cellists".

And on top of all that - great bands playing downstairs for free too - like Turbo Fruits, Foals, and The Maccabees! go now. bye.

Erik Friedlander & Tim Bracy set time change today

Erik Friedlander
ERik Friedlander

Erik Friedlander's bow grates across the strings of his cello, wrenching notes into a stunted, disdainful exclamation. Imagine Friedlander-- now one of the world's top cellists with a Rolodex of collaborators from John Zorn and Laurie Anderson to John Darnielle and Courtney Love-- as a boy from New York's hinterlands, maybe 14 or 15 years old, out West in an RV sitting atop a 1966 Chevrolet pick-up truck. His mother, father, sister, and dog are along for the ride, as the truck barrels down an interstate. Suddenly, an Airstream trailer-- "sleek, silver...throwing our reflection back at us"-- zips past the Friedlander summer home. More than three decades later, this is how Erik Friedlander remembers his family losing a piece of their pride. [Pitchfork]
Erik Friedlander is playing the free BrooklynVegan party at Pianos today (Oct 20, 2007) - upstairs @ 6:15pm - NOT 4:45pm like the flyer says. Tim Bracy will instead play at 4:45pm. They switched.

Listen & watch Erik Friedlander on Virb.com. And come by and see him today, and get there early for Dave Godowsky and the King Left. Then after Erik get dinner before dancing with us at the afterparty. c u there.

Yo Majesty didn't show up! (but they did play Irving)

Sorry to everyone that showed up to see Yo Majesty play at R Bar yesterday! I realized Yo Majesty hadn't shown up about 30 minutes before they were supposed to go on (which was actually after they were supposed to go on because we were running late). I quickly tracked them down and found out they weren't coming at all - a huge miscommunication somewhere in the chain of people they work with. Oh well. It worked out fine anyway - we were running an hour behind, and Islands were the perfect way to finish up the party that had been going for eight hours already anyway.

Yo Majesty did play the show they were scheduled to play later in the night at Irving Plaza (the Fillmore) though. That's the show Jefferson went to see, and he took this picture....

M.I.A. played Terminal 5

photos & review by Trent Wolbe

MIA @ Terminal 5

With the paint still smelling new in this weird and cavernous venue, MIA and her crew rocked steady for five whole hours. Technical problems cut Blaqstarr's set short so MIA had to go on a little early - starting things up with an absolutely mind-bending performance of "Bamboo Banga" - but no one complained.

Teens in stripes, zebra prints, neon wigs, oversized shirts, huge chains, and tight pants were the dominant crowd and they really made the whole place bounce.

Gunshot samples and 90's references abounded - Afrikan Boy must've called for a "Whoomp There It Is" response about 15 times. And of course, the whole thing pulsed like an awesomely bad website from 1996. The Mario / Arcangelesque visuals for "Paper Planes" were awesome and blended well with the live-action dance shots from other countries she had so much fun shooting.

MIA @ Terminal 5

Trent's review continued below....

In the middle, she invited the audience onstage, and guess what, they came.

My favorite part of the night, though, was when MIA called for all of the lights onstage to be killed, and Afrikan Boy told everyone to put up dey cell phones, cameras, anything that glowed. Really magical!!! I forgot what song she played after that but it was awesome.

The whole thing was awesome. Terminal 5 needs to get better ventilation if they want to keep having serious dance parties, though.

----

Someone also emailed me a much differernt point of view....

God that was an awful concert at Terminal 5. The tedious DJ set, the baiting of the crowd ... ugh. [anonymous email]
The show was at Terminal 5 in NYC on October 18th. more photos @ Trent's Flickr.

Walter Meego

I (david bruno) first became aware of Chicago's Walter Meego (band, not dude) a few summers back when their infectious "Romantic" track was making the rounds across the interworld. Their quirky, electronic pop feels not dissimilair to Hot Chip, but starting with more of a rock angle. Music.for-Robots Mark said, "They're really doing some interesting stuff, blending the dark electronic with the Chicago post rock. It's the type of sound that makes so much sense in today's current scene, but rarely executed this well."

I reached out to them and brought them to do a DJ set here in New York. Since then, they've played live here many times and released singles for "Romantic" and "Hollywood," got a Switch and Sinden remix, toured the country with VHS or Beta, and gone through some line-up changes. All the while, they've recorded a full length album and got signed to Almost Gold Recordings (home to Peter Bjorn & John and Calvin Harris). Their album is due out early next year, but the boys are romping through CMJ this week (including a set last night opening for UNKLE at Webster Hall). Saturday night (Oct 20) they're playing our DANCE party on Saturday night. Their full schedule is below. Get to 205 early on Saturday night to catch Walter Meego and Thunderheist!

PopstaticSpeaking of Walter Meego's line-up changes: one of the founding members of the band, Jarrett Spiegel left to delve into his own electronic production. Thunderheist

The pursuit of fun has proved to be a successful artistic method for Thunderheist. Grahm lived in Montreal and Isis in Toronto. They were MySpace friends. “He accidentally sent me a remix he made for Spank Rock,” tells the lady on vox, “and I spit over it.”

“Anywhere there were gaps in the vocals, she was like, ‘Mwew, mwew mwew,’” Grahm says, using his disposable coffee cup as a mic. The chemistry was clear. “So I started cranking out beats and sent them to her.” They went into their first show having never played in the same room.

Earning a rep for her onstage antics, Isis trades shots for lap dances, gets the crowd hyped and provokes dirty dancing by showing how it’s done. “Our live shows got people talking,” Grahm explains contently. [URB Magazine]

Thunderheist played the Big Stereo party at Studio B Wednesday night. Then they played Highline Ballroom with Yo Majesty, Islands, Enon, and Trail of Dead last night (Oct 18). In case you missed them, David Bruno and I just got confirmation that they accepted our invitation to also play at our Saturday night party @ 205 (RSVP). The DeathSet, Pianos, awesome (BrooklynVegan CMJ show)

The Deathset @ Pianos, NYC - Oct 17, 2007 (CRED)
DeathSet @ Pianos

TheDeathSet = awesome. They played on in the middle of the floor (like their friend Dan Deacon does) @ the BrooklynVegan day party at Pianos yesterday (Oct 17, 2007), and they are/were fun - very, very, very, fun, and good, and full of energy, and just smiling, and so good. And they played right before the Meat Puppets (who I was hoping would manage to catch some of the DeathSet's set, but I don't think they did. DeathSet's also-awesome friends from Team Robespierre did stick around after their also-awesome set to support though - more on them later.)

"...Last time I saw the band they were on the big stage at the South Street Seaport, and though it was a great performance it was certainly lacking something. As it turns out that something was intimacy...." [Pop Tarts Suck Toasted]

Deerhunter @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC (CMJ) - pics

Deerhunter @ Bowery Ballroom

Like I said, I should have been asleep. I haven't been getting much, had just been at Pianos all day, AND was at Bowery all night the night before. Nonetheless, I not only watched all of No Age, White Williams, and Dan Deacon, I stuck it out 'till the end to watch every last second of Deerhunter's set - Bradford's rants included. So, here's my question: is frontman Bradford's schtick an act, is he just weird, or is it just the drugs kicking in? The last choice was kind of consistent with the show getting better and better as it went along which went right along with Bradford getting crazier and crazier (disclaimer: don't do drugs, even if it is them that makes Bradford a more interesting entertainer. Bradford, don't do them either - it's not worth it.). I thought the show started off pretty boring, and Bradford was being extremely tame. That mixed with my tiredness, had me almost leaving after a few songs.

Next thing you know, the band picked up immensely, the songs were getting better, and Bradford was jumping off drumkits, falling on the floor, saying all kinds of stuff like, (fabricated or not) "I miss my family", and going on and on about how much NY sucks for not allowing him to smoke on stage. Actually, the smoking stuff came off a bit whiney which went hand in hand with the fact that when he finally did light up, he didn't really seem like as much of a rebel as he thought he was being. I haven't seen an artist kicked off the stage for smoking yet, and usually they just do it without saying anything about it. That (and the slow beginning) aside, great show (for me).

Photos of Dan Deacon (who played right before him to a slightly fuller room, and a much better aka earlier set time for a Wednesday night) here. More photos of Deerhunter, below....

Dan Deacon @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC (CMJ) - pics

Dan Deacon @ Bowery Ballroom

Dan Deacon does not care about you, and by "you" I mean the person who came to check out what this Dan Deacon guy is all about, and the guy who was tired and leaning against the wall, or the girl who was hoping to have something to look at for $16 (or whatever the ticket price was). Dan Deacon only cares about making sure that those who want to dance with him are having a good time. To prove it once again, he played his sold-out Windish CMJ showcase at the overflowing Bowery Ballroom last night (Oct 17) - on the floor (of course), and completely in the dark. The only light was eminating from his glowing green skull, and coming from the many camera flashes that were surrounding him. It didn't matter where you were in the venue, even those of us who should have been home sleeping, but instead took it all in from the balcony above, basically had nothing to look at. That didn't stop me from having a good time, but there's no way I was enjoying it as much as the hundreds who Dan was really playing for - those who were going crazy and dancing out of their minds on the crowded floor around him.

Dan Deacon @ Bowery Ballroom

OK, I lied. As you can see from the pictures, the lights were on - for one song. During that time Dan orchestrated the 'dance party' portion of the show, and he had some lucky crowd members (or his puppets - depending on how you look at the whole thing....the cult-like nature of it all...nevermind...) running around and high-fiving people, running up the stairs to the balcony, and back down, etc...

Jefferson took the pictures you see here from the balcony. Bao was on the floor. More photos below.....

As previously announced, the free BrooklynVegan party this Friday (Oct 19) is at R Bar - a swanky new (sort of) bar/venue on the Lower East Side - right on Bowery between Prince and Spring - a short walk from...pretty much anywhere else on the Lower East Side. The show is 18+ to get in, will have an open Svedka/Red Bull/Bloody Mary bar (while supplies last) for those over 21, and features ten bands - including Black Kids.

Meat Puppets played one of their three NYC-area shows yesterday afternoon at Pianos - part of the BrooklynVegan series of free parties happening during CMJ this year. Meat Puppets played their official showcase at Lion's Den later that night. Download a lossless version of the Pianos show from NYCTAPER.

...they entertained a packed room with a loose and playful set that featured several improvisational segments. The highlight was the 12-minute version of "Up on the Sun" that began with an introduction jam that melded neatly into the song.

TK Webb & The Visions (CMJ spotlight) MP3s & Tour Dates

by BrooklynVegan Mike

DOWNLOAD: TK Webb - Phantom Parade (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: TK Webb - Oh Baby No (MP3)

TK WebbYou've heard the tale before - songwriter leaves his hometown to make a name in the Big Apple with a few songs and a dream. TK Webb left Kansas City to perform his brand of gritty country-folk wrapped in a dusty, blues veneer with just a guitar, harmonica, and a suitcase to kick a beat to. Since then, he has established himself in the city. He even now has a backing band called The Visions behind him - adding layers to his homespun tales of woe.

There's a timeless quality to the music, no doubt a byproduct of mixing genres, covering every decade from 1940 to 1980. And though he is certainly not the first artist to make this type of music, Webb's identity comes through, making it undeniably his. TK Webb just released an album called Phantom Parade on The Social Registry (home to Blood on the Wall and Gang Gang Dance), and that's whose official showcase TK Webb already played. If you missed it, they have another show on October 20th @ Galapagos in Brooklyn with Stars Like Fleas and Bear In Heaven, and if you miss that too - you can always catch them on tour with The Wallflowers. They play Highline Ballroom together on October 22nd. All tour dates below....

Beneath the Sky (CMJ spotlight) - 2007 Tour Dates

Victory Recordsby BrooklynVegan Mike

Victory Records has been there for me from an early age until the present. From Earth Crisis to Minus to Bury Your Dead, they release some of the best heavy music around. Following up the promise of last year's EP (More Than You Can Handle), Beneath the Sky have proven worthy of the pedigree set by Victory's list of triumphant acts.

Hailing from Cincinnati, Beneath the Sky craft intense metalcore with all of its trappings (blast beats, practically danceable riffing, general intensity). Vocalist Joey Nelson follows the path laid by John Henry of Darkest Hour (another great Victory band) by taking a black metal approach, high pitch wails followed by guttural screams. In the ever splintering world of hardcore, both bands (along with All Shall Perish and Montreal's Despised Icon) have been classified as Deathcore. You can get dizzy mirco-organizing all of the subgenres - all you need to know is What Demons Do To Saints is one of the best heavy albums of the year.

They play the Victory CMJ showcase at Bowery Poetry Club today (Oct 18). All tour dates below....

The Narrator (CMJ spotlight) - MP3s & 2007 Tour Dates

by BrooklynVegan Mike

DOWNLOAD: The Narrator - SurfJew (MP3)

The NarratorA melange of shoegaze, 80s college rock, and bit of math rock thrown in, I've been a fan of this Chicago outfit's album All That To The Wall for some time. Think Tokyo Police Club without the caffeine and the hand claps, and you'll have a good idea.

They played Pop Montreal and everyone who saw their set gave big plaudits. They deserve more ears, so give them a shot. I think you'll find they're one of those bands that sneak on you. Before you realize it, they've snuck into your iPod top 25.

The Narrator are playing quadruple duty in NYC this week, so the opportunity is there to hear them first hand. All tour dates below...

Ola Podrida (CMJ Spotlight) - 2007 Tour Dates

by BrooklynVegan Mike

DOWNLOAD: Ola Podrida - Instead (MP3)

Ola PodridaEarlier this year, an interesting news bit on Pitchfork appeared reporting they had noticed that the album cover for Interpol's then upcoming album Our Love To Admire was suspiciously similar to just released Ola Podrida's self-titled debut. It was just a funny case of "great minds think alike," but despite their disparate sounds, there are other aspects that link them together.

Both call New York home, but Ola Podrida's wistful folk ballads (in the vein of Iron and Wine and Micah P. Hinson) are miles away from Interpol's urban decadence. Both have band members immersed in film composing, but Podrida front man David Wingo made his name in that field first - before branching out with his band, scoring among several films,David Gordon Green's classic George Washington. And both bands have received great write ups from the music press, but while Interpol's latest has received mixed reviews, Ola Pordrida's release has more more consistent praise.

They've been building a steady buzz over the last year, due in part to their very good album, but also their fantastic live show (they were one of the hot tickets to Pop Montreal). Definitely worth checking out. Dates below...

Ola Podrida - 2007 Tour Dates
Oct 19 - Pianos (DAVID WINGO SOLO SET) New York, New York
Oct 19 - CMJ MUSIC MARATHON : Union Hall Brooklyn
Oct 29 - The Mercury Lounge w/ DAVID BAZAN + ALL SMILES NYC, New York
Nov 2 - Maxwell’s w/ ROGUE WAVE + PORT O’BRIEN Hoboken, New Jersey

the week in Dance w/ David Bruno (10/17/07) (part 1)

Digitalism @ Studio B, NYC (CRED)
Digitalism @ Studio B

Lots of moaning going on about CMJ this year, but you can't deny that DANCE is a big factor in this years' Marathon.

Big official CMJ shows with Simian Mobile Disco, New Young Pony Club (Tickets), MSTRKRFT (Tickets), and Justice (along with this little column here) leave no doubt that this past year has been a big year for DJs and bands with a beat.

Last week some dance acts got off to an early start on Thursday night: Digitalism played Studio B and set the place on fire (or at least attracted the FDNY), !!! punk-funked Webster Hall (more photos), and Moby DJ'd at Hiro. Photos of Moby at Driven by Boredom. James Murphy and Annie Mac DJ'd at Hiro BAllroom last night.

Outside of the big CMJ shows be sure to catch (in no particular order) one of the Black Ghosts sets at the BV party or at the Delancey (I hear Simon will be singing while they DJ their tracks), A-Trak and DJ Medhi tag-teaming at Hiro on Wednesday (tonight) should be legendary, Erol Alkan dropping rock tracks for the ravers at the 3rd Fixed Anniversary at Studio B on Saturday with special guests, MIA gives you two chances to catch her at Terminal 5, James Lavelle brings UNKLE to Webster on Thursday, David E. Sugar, King Oppression, and Walter Meego at our show at 205 on Saturday night, and Muscles plays both Modular parties (Studio B with NYPC and 200 Orchard on Friday). Also tonight: Dragonette at the Canal Room and the boys and girls from Big Stereo finally touch down in NYC at Studio B with Thunderheist. Ghostland Observatory brought a laser to their last show at the Bowery, find out what they bring to Webster on Friday night.

Don't forget to RSVP For our Saturday night party. More about that later (coming in part 2).

Elk CityIndie-pop is a loaded term. It conjures up different ideas - from Labrador Records to K Records, Beat Happening to Belle and Sebastian, Camera Obscura to Radio Dept. When coming up with the appropriate description for Elk City, indie-pop was the single classification that stayed in my head. They're bouncy, they're melodic, they're celebratory, all hallmarks of indie-pop. But the description doesn't hold because they are all that and more.

The best starting point would be with singer Renee LoBue's voice. The centerpiece to much of the songs, she moves effortlessly from power-invoking brashness to feint, Feist-like delicateness. But she's just one element, as the band around her captures every detail from 60's soul croons to classic country twang. Catch them at one of four CMJ-related shows in NYC this week - the first one being upstairs at Pianos on Wednesday October 17th (TODAY) @ 4pm (the artist that was listed as "TBA" on the flyer) - part of the free BrooklynVegan party. British Sea Power played Maxwell's

British Sea Power @ Maxwell's, NJ - Oct 15, 2007 by Paul Bachmann (more)
British Sea Power @ Maxwells

How was it? BSP play Bowery Ballroom on October 18th, and other places. How were the openers Stardeath & White Dwarfs? (that is one band, not two). Fun fact: one of their members is related to Wayne Coyne.

VIDEO: Les Savy Fav's Big Break

It was the biggest show of their lives....

Les Savy Fav, an obscure underground band, are invited to perform with The Arcade Fire, LCD soundsystem, Blond redhead, and Wild Light for an audience of 25,000 people on Randals Island in New York City. All the bands friends tell them that the concert is "the Show of The Year" and that how lucky they are to finally get a break. We document this important day.
Les Savy Fav are not playing CMJ, but Syd will make an appearance in Juiced Elfers at the Frenchkiss showcase.

Miracle Fortress were denied at the border!!

Miracle FortressPeople from CMJ are trying to still get Miracle Fortress into the United States from Canada, but it looks like it's going to take a miracle (PUN INTENDED) to get them here at this point, and they're DEFINITELY not making it for 8pm - their set time at Bowery Ballroom tonight (me = crying). Bon Iver is now going on at 7, and The Shaky Hands are playing at 8, and everything else runs exactly on time. IF Miracle Fortress do make it, we'll let them play after Voxtrot at 1am. I'm not sure that's very likely though. They were supposed to play SoundFix tomorrow too. :-(

The Warlocks (CMJ spotlight) - 2007 Tour Dates

by BrooklynVegan Mike

DOWNLOAD The Warlocks - Baby Blue (MP3)

WarlocksI'm always surprised by which bands are able to make a name for themselves and which others toil away under the shadows. A lot of it, of course, is due to the political machinations of the music industry, but even in the ultra-hyper blog celebrity (of which I am contributing to this very moment), some bands still fail to get their due notice. I believe The Warlocks are one of those bands.

They came out of the late 90s neo-psychedelic scene, along with awesome bands Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Brian Jonestown Massacre, and the sometimes good (but not lately) Dandy Warhols. Each of their albums are different in sound and approach (due to their lineup, which fluctuates from as few as four to as many as ten), while at the same time maintaining a singular sound that is uniquely their own. Their new album Heavy Deavy Skull Lover is practically an instrumental album, with long, repetitive drones, swirling guitar symphonies, and the slow, steady release of a morphine drip. It's possibly their best album, though Phoenix definitely has its moments.

They'll be playing three shows in NYC this week - including the Tee Pee records showcase at Luna Lounge. All tour dates, and some videos, below....

Fatal Flying Guiloteens (CMJ Spotlight)

by BrooklynVegan Mike

DOWNLOAD: Fatal Flying Guiloteens - Reveal the Rats (MP3)

Fatal Flying GuiloteensThese five lads with a penchant for the Wu-Tang Clan (or Shaw Brothers films) bring a guitar assault on record that just makes you want to see them live. The first time I listened to them, I was reminded of Blood Brothers and early At The Drive-In (coincidentally or otherwise, they have released records on GSL), but that wouldn't be fair. They are certainly their own band with an infectious brand of spazz-jazz-punk, or whatever label a publicist would write on a one-sheet. Chaotic, schizophrenic, and other adjectives that end in -ic, the Guilloteens are a frenetic (there's another one) group that will hopefully get some well deserved pub this week.

Their myspace has material from their new album, and it doesn't sound like they've slipped since I first heard them three years ago. Their one "official" CMJ show this week is part of the Frenchkiss Records showcase at Pianos (that Juiced Elfers are also playing), but you can also catch them at three other NYC show, including (cheap plug) a Brooklynvegan party on the 19th at R Bar. All dates below.....

Be Your Own Pet, Heartless Bastards, Dirty on Purpose, The Exit & Antibalas............ TAKEOVER BAM

BAM

The Brooklyn Academy of Music is letting the commoners in. More details below...

From the NY Sun

The Brooklyn Academy of Music, which often breaks ground in its efforts to attract new audiences, has announced its first ever all-night party, which it is whimsically calling "Takeover." On Saturday, November 3, between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m., BAM will welcome approximately 2,500 people through its doors, to enjoy drinks, music, movies, and art and video installations.

BAM chose November 3 in part because it's the last performance of "The BQE," a world-premiere commission from the singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens. All three performances of "The BQE" are sold out, and much of the audience will be new to BAM. (BAM's vice president of marketing and communications, Lisa Mallory, said BAM's ticket database showed that the majority of people who purchased tickets for "The BQE" had not purchased tickets for either the Next Wave Festival or the Spring Season in the last five years.)

The purpose of "Takeover" is to target "folks who have not come in BAM's doors before," the associate producer of music programming, Darrell McNeill, said. "Usually they come in by way of [BAMcaféLive] or BAM Rose Cinemas," he said. But with "Takeover," "we're trying to introduce the full BAM experience to the next generation of patrons."

Five bands — Antibalas, Be Your Own Pet, the Exit, Heartless Bastards, and Dirty on Purpose — will perform in the Howard Gilman Opera House, while the DJ's of Ubiquita NYC will spin soul, funk, reggae, and world music in BAMcafé......[continued at the NY Sun]

Muddd says Bowery is okay, but Cheeseburger calls

Cheeseburger

Why Muddd didn't go see Voxtrot @ Music Hall of Williamsburg:

Show: Voxtrot at Northsix for Yuppies
Why I'm not going: I'm fucking tired and not terribly psyched about going back to "Music Hall of Williamsburg." Never mind that the place is as clean (and has as much character) as a movie theater at the mall, the staff there is a total bunch of assholes. Last show I saw there (Boris with Damon and Naomi) I saw a bouncer kick a couple out for -- get this -- crouching against a wall. Fuck this place. Fuck it right in the ass.
Why Muddd isn't going to Bowery Ballroom tonight:
Show: Voxtrot and The Rosebuds (with many others) at Bowery Ballroom
Why I'm not going: Cheeseburger calls.
Check Muddd's blog for more CMJ recommendations. Check below for more Cheeseburger tour dates...

Cheeseburger - 2007 Tour Dates
Oct 16 - Galapagos Art Space brooklyn, New York
Oct 19 - THE MIDDLE EAST (Upstairs) Cambridge, Boston, New York
