Cut Off Your Hands

Hey there,
We are a four peice band from New Zealand, originally called Shaky Hands but now Cut Off Your Hands....

This was due to the threat of legal action from a band from Portland, Oregon. They didn't like us using the name (or anything similar) in America as they did get to that teritory first and it would have been too time consuming and costly for us to take this matter to court.

We did think about still calling ourselves Shaky Hands and having the name Cut Off Your Hands just for America but that would have got too confusing hence the complete name change. We got the name Cut Off Your Hands from the title of our EP, the EP is now called Shaky Hands..

So to find us please go to

We love you all for being our friends & look forward to seeing you soon!!

The red, white and blue album cover pictured above is the "Shaky Hands" (formerly "Cut Off Your Hands") EP by Cut Off Your Hands (formerly Shaky Hands) (New Zealand). The album to its right is "The Shaky Hands" LP by The Shaky Hands (Portland, Oregon).

Cut Off Your Hands are pictured above being silly with grass in their mouth and some fake chickens in the background. Here is a picture of The Shaky Hands being silly in the trunk of a vehicle:

Shaky Hands

The Shaky Hands share a member with the Castanets, and have been compared to Neutral Milk Hotel, R.E.M., and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Saying "Cut Off Your Hands Say Yeah" is a funny joke, even though Cut Off Your Hands' music sounds nothing like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

Both of these bands are playing CMJ. Both of these hands are playing BrooklynVegan shows. The Shaky Hands are playing my Bowery Ballroom show on October 16th with The Rosebuds, Dean & Britta, Miracle Fortress, Bon Iver, The Most Serene Republic, and one more unannounced band. Tickets are on sale. Cut Off Your Hands are playing my Pianos show on October 17th AT NOON. Celebration, Black Ghosts and many more unnanounced bands are also on that bill (full show TBA soon). It is free. All tour dates below.....

cut off your hands are 1billion times better... shaky hands should get a life, quit and let the real shaky hands have their name back

shaky hands should stop being p holes.... do they have nothing better to do than trying to bully up and coming bands from the other side of the world into changing their name... perhaps they should concentrate on their music rather than trying to invent lawsuits against other bands to make money!!!!!!!!!!!

damn, why aren't they playing the same show. that would be amazing.

i'm a fan of the Oregon band, but both bands are pretty good. why though are cut off your hands writing to bv about this crazy grudge? nobody made the NZ band change their name. the Oregon band already had the name in the US so when the NZ came for south by southwest last year the record label insisted they use a different name HERE. on their own they changed their name back home and everywhere else.
still going to go see their show though.

To cut down on confusion, it's the New Zealand band that I think we'll be hearing more from.

"why though are cut off your hands writing to bv about this crazy grudge?"

the letter is publicly posted on their old MySpace page.

How can I be sure,

When you don't give me love?
You give me pale shelter
You don't give me love
You give me cold hands

That's not the trunk, that's the bed (of a pickup with a camper top).

Portland's Shaky Hands are cool. I'm sure Cut Off Your Hands are cool too (I've just never heard them). Everyone should just relax and enjoy both bands. Getting worked up about it and being jerks isn't good for anybody. Isn't there enough music and fans and fun to go around?

hands are the new wolf

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2007 2:36 PM

"hands" is the new "bear" for Indie(tm) bands.

Portland PRIDE!!!
I've seen The Shaky Hands many times here, including during a free all ages music festival we through here every year these guys are some of the nicest dudes around. Total gentleman and freaking awesome musicians. The play tightly crafted music that makes you love life and get with your girl.
In other words Don't be hatin'. They aren't some big bad band trying to shake a voodoo stick and go after the little guy.
They're in this business for the same reasons we all are. Just chill out and realize that sometimes (no matter how much we may not like it) our industry needs to be seen and treated like a business otherwise things wouldn't ever really get done.

i'm a bit disappointed that neither of these bands managed to incorporate Wolf or Bear into their names...
