Dan Deacon @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC (CMJ) - pics

Dan Deacon @ Bowery Ballroom

Dan Deacon does not care about you, and by "you" I mean the person who came to check out what this Dan Deacon guy is all about, and the guy who was tired and leaning against the wall, or the girl who was hoping to have something to look at for $16 (or whatever the ticket price was). Dan Deacon only cares about making sure that those who want to dance with him are having a good time. To prove it once again, he played his sold-out Windish CMJ showcase at the overflowing Bowery Ballroom last night (Oct 17) - on the floor (of course), and completely in the dark. The only light was eminating from his glowing green skull, and coming from the many camera flashes that were surrounding him. It didn't matter where you were in the venue, even those of us who should have been home sleeping, but instead took it all in from the balcony above, basically had nothing to look at. That didn't stop me from having a good time, but there's no way I was enjoying it as much as the hundreds who Dan was really playing for - those who were going crazy and dancing out of their minds on the crowded floor around him.

OK, I lied. As you can see from the pictures, the lights were on - for one song. During that time Dan orchestrated the 'dance party' portion of the show, and he had some lucky crowd members (or his puppets - depending on how you look at the whole thing....the cult-like nature of it all...nevermind...) running around and high-fiving people, running up the stairs to the balcony, and back down, etc...

Jefferson took the pictures you see here from the balcony. Bao was on the floor. More photos below.....

No Age and White Williams played before Dan. Deerhunter played after him. MTV was there.

BV, you had an awesome "Reserved" table in the balcony Tuesday night.
It was empty the whole night.
Kind of a waste, don't cha think?!?
You could've had a contest or something for those seats. Just sayin'.
Otherwise, great work. Can't wait til next year. :( Miracle Fortress :(

Posted by strunk & white | October 18, 2007 4:06 PM

did he stop the show a dozen times, like he did in philly, asking the crowd to give him some room? annoying schtick. i think he needs to realize that he's outgrown basement shows

Posted by notefortheplaintiff | October 18, 2007 4:32 PM

Aw, Dan Deacon probably cares for those other folks a little, too. Even the name-callers and shoulder-shruggers.

But the Greater Good, y'know?

I had no idea Wesley Willis was resurrected as a white guy named Dan. Crazy.

Does anyone else (probably older BV readers) think some of Dan Deacon's stuff sounds a bit like Sigue Sigue Sputnik?

Posted by Anonymous | October 18, 2007 5:49 PM

Glad to see someone making a show fun.

I think they're all staring at that girl's tits

Dan Deacon is incredible. He has never played a show on-stage in his entire booty-shakin career. He's always sweating, dancing and having fun right there with you. Perhaps his music isn't for you and that's okay but then why did you go to the show? There is no point in trash talking this guy. He obviously has incredible passion for what he does otherwise he would stay dry up on the stage. That has to be admired. He is also the sweetest, most loveable guy in town. He is willing to talk to anyone. He doesn't hide out after his shows, he sells his own merch, listens to what you have to say and is incredibly grateful. All I'm saying is this... he might not be your cup of tea but there is absolutely no reason to put the guy down. It's simply not necessary.

Worst. BO. Ever.

Posted by Ared | October 18, 2007 9:04 PM

Word. Tenaya's got it. I've never seen so many kids shake it in nyc/brooklyn in my whole three years of living here. I've seen him at silent barn and Studio B and I am thrilled he can work the larger venues with as much love as he does in Bushwick. Give the dude room cause it's definitely hard to breath let alone play any music when kids are pushing up on your rib cage. Calling him fat makes you an asshole. and fuck calling him tim herrington, Dan Deacon is a good seed... he does talk to anyone and he does care that everyone who loves to dance gets to work it with everyone else... without cameras ablaze.

when did this blog turn on dan so hard?

anyone at that show knows that he fucking owned that room. and making fun of him because he is over weight, what is this Us magazine? get a life and give the guy a break.

I was right up in the front his entire set, dancing and jumping around with everyone else. Usually I don't do that, but with all the lights off and his music playing, how can you not?

Posted by Anonymous | October 19, 2007 4:29 AM

i was in the back the whole set and still had a great time! i could dance eaiser, it sounded awesome back there, and when i wasnt dancing i would watch the crowd go insane. saying there wasnt anything to watch is totally fucking off. you could sit back and watch a sea of people moving together. this review of the show really proved that this site have no idea what dan deacon is doing or about.

and honestly, all the these remarks about his weight are just disgusting. i bet all of you find time to leave these blog comments inbetween your modeling gigs. so what if the dude is fat? i dont even know what i read these comments or this blog. its really just a haven for coward haters to try to bring down something they don't understand. its like reading a jr high bathroom wall.

Posted by Anonymous | October 19, 2007 5:00 AM

I don't understand. Am I supposed to like him or not? I knew he was fat and bald, but I was only dancing cause I thought he was supposed to be cool despite that - *ironically* - now you're saying that he sucks? Does he suck ironically? I don't get it.

Posted by Anonymous | October 19, 2007 8:50 AM

let me know when this is over...

Posted by Anonymous | October 19, 2007 10:02 AM

i've seen him play on a stage before (at suny purchase's culture shock), but he hardly ever does.

is there a link for the MTV clip with him on it?

Posted by Chris | October 19, 2007 2:17 PM

does anyone know if this stuff made it onto mtv?

Dan Deacon was in the background of that scene in Terminator 3 when the robot is running down the street

An interview with an anonymous Brooklyn Vegan commenter (in one act):

Me: Hey, whatcha doin'?

BVAC: I'm writing a comment telling Dan Deacon to kill himself.

Me: Oh, wow, do you really want him to kill himself?

BVAC: I dunno, I guess not. Wouldn't be the end of the world if he did it.

Me: Jeez, that's pretty harsh. Why would you take the time to post on a busy forum of a very popular website to tell him to kill himself?

BVAC: Because he's an annoying hipster!

Me: I don't understand, what does that mean?

BVAC: You know, he like, dresses funny and doesn't really do anything during his shows.

Me: So you want him to kill himself...

BVAC: I just want people to shut up about him already.

Me: But you brought him up by telling him to kill himself!

BVAC: You don't understand, he's really annoying.

Me: Then why are you bothering to take the time to read about him and write about it online? Why not just ignore it?

BVAC: He's just such a hipster.

Me: There's that word again...I don't really understand that, either. He actual seems like a pretty sincere and nice (albeit smelly) guy.

BVAC: He also can't play music. He just gets onstage and hits play!

Me: Isn't he at the very least hitting play on songs that he wrote and recorded? They seem like pretty complicated and elaborate songs to me, too. Heck, he has a masters degree in composition. Besides, aren't there tons of people who play pre-recoreded music?

BVAC: Yeah, they're called djs and they're way cooler than hipster electro-dance shit. He's also fat.

Me: So you are you worried about his health?

BVAC: No, just mean that makes him suck more.

Me: I'm just not following your logic. It seems like you're just trying to get a rise out of people.

BVAC: No, i'm just trying to tell them that Dan Deacon sucks.

Me: But why bother?

BVAC: Because he sucks.

Me: Do you realize that by devoting so much time to tormenting this dude online that you might actually have an impact on his life?

BVAC: Duh, don't you remember why we're here in the first place? I was trying to tell him to kill himself.

Me: Why not just ignore it and spend your time alerting people to things that you like?

BVAC: This is more important.

Me: I guess we'll just agree to disagree on this, then.

BVAC: I think we'll just agree that you're a fucking stupid retarded asshole who needs to go slit his wrists.

Me: I see. Any final thoughts?

BVAC: Fuck Dan Deacon! Shit fuck poop ass cock!

I heard that Dan Deacon's national guard unit is being deployed to the persian gulf.

Posted by Ann | October 22, 2007 1:54 PM

Best dude ever.

Represent my scene and homies to the end...

Fuck ya'll haters. Go work your 9-5 and hate it.

This group of people including Dan are so important to me and are so so so special.

It took me traveling from the antipodes and all over the world to realize it.

Why hate when you can appreciate?

I don't understand why people are being so rude. If you don't like his music or the people who listen to his music, deal with it. Dan is such a sweet person.
