Deerhunter @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC (CMJ) - pics

Deerhunter @ Bowery Ballroom

Like I said, I should have been asleep. I haven't been getting much, had just been at Pianos all day, AND was at Bowery all night the night before. Nonetheless, I not only watched all of No Age, White Williams, and Dan Deacon, I stuck it out 'till the end to watch every last second of Deerhunter's set - Bradford's rants included. So, here's my question: is frontman Bradford's schtick an act, is he just weird, or is it just the drugs kicking in? The last choice was kind of consistent with the show getting better and better as it went along which went right along with Bradford getting crazier and crazier (disclaimer: don't do drugs, even if it is them that makes Bradford a more interesting entertainer. Bradford, don't do them either - it's not worth it.). I thought the show started off pretty boring, and Bradford was being extremely tame. That mixed with my tiredness, had me almost leaving after a few songs.

Next thing you know, the band picked up immensely, the songs were getting better, and Bradford was jumping off drumkits, falling on the floor, saying all kinds of stuff like, (fabricated or not) "I miss my family", and going on and on about how much NY sucks for not allowing him to smoke on stage. Actually, the smoking stuff came off a bit whiney which went hand in hand with the fact that when he finally did light up, he didn't really seem like as much of a rebel as he thought he was being. I haven't seen an artist kicked off the stage for smoking yet, and usually they just do it without saying anything about it. That (and the slow beginning) aside, great show (for me).

Photos of Dan Deacon (who played right before him to a slightly fuller room, and a much better aka earlier set time for a Wednesday night) here. More photos of Deerhunter, below....

So you think the new song was boring? that was the first song and I think it was beautiful. Deerhunter rules with the talking or without it... it's the music man what makes them one of the best this year.

Beautiful pictures, Jefferson! I was relaxing in the back but decided to take a couple snaps when the cigarette came out. http://www.looserecord.com/2007/10/in-and-out-thank-you-for-smoking.php

there's really no music without the drugs kids.

what is that "don't do drugs, kids" some vestigal Nancy Reagan propaganda still floating around?

I have a really difficult time looking at him... I'm just glad he's wearing clothes this time.

Does anyone know if they are still playing Cake Shop today? They're no longer listed on their site or Oh My Rockness.

I feel like this has been said 1000 times here, but maybe not. Dude has a genetic condition called Marfin's. Bad for yo heart and makes it impossoble to put on weight. He's fucked in the head over it and realizes his appearance makes people uncomfortable. So hate his music or whatever, but exercise some empathy with his health. Every time this band is mentioned anywhere, 2 of the first 5 comments are always, "Ew! I had to look away! Eat Something!" Yeah. He knows. Get past it. And maybe, from now on, think a moment before you blurt out every snap judgement you make based on someone's appearance.

yea...marfan's is no joke.

hey, he's listed there with Flo Hyman.

What a stupid comment...
everybody, open a dictionnary (medical) and look for Marfan Syndrome...
that will explain his appearance.

clearly the eat something comment was mocking all of those previous comments over the past few months about bradford's appearence.

Anon 4:56- Maybe so, but is it appropriate to apply irony to everything? At the end of the day, the words on the screen are the same. It's just kind of... deadening.

smoking is bad fo yo health too dudes

when did music ever relied on looks? oh yea, pop music. who cares what this guy looks like. or is it that some are envious of the breakthrough with his band. music fans are slowly becoming mainstream, by judging on appearances, i guess the american idol age had become alive in every music genre.
