Iron & Wine @ Town Hall, NYC - Sept 30, 2007 (CRED)
Iron & Wine @ Town Hall

While I did enjoy the show, I can’t really say that I flat out loved it for a couple of reasons. First off, there was very little between song stage banter, which is more or less fine for a place like Town Hall, but I thought he could have engaged us just a little bit more — maybe a few anecdotes about the new songs or something like that. Also, he is not the most charismatic stage performer, and given his music, I wasn’t exactly expecting David Lee Roth like antics, but frankly, there was just a little too much ass to the audience jamming for my liking. at his philly show there were a lot of empty seats. it seems this album hasn't really been garnering much excitement in the press.

i saw him at knitting factory years ago...the music was nice enough but holy shit, the show went on forever...very boring towards the end.

i left early. i dont think sam beam should play live with a full band ever again. iron & wine songs with arrangements for 8 band members is just not my cup of tea.

upward over the mountain was amazing. iron & wine isn't for everyone, but it was for me last night.

I saw them play (full band) last summer at mccarren pool and thought is was a great and beautiful show. Also saw them at ACL fest a few years ago. So I can strongly recommend Iron and Wine on a warm summer night.

"hasn't really been garnering much excitement in the press" - - it was a PF "recommended listening" and in Metacritic's Top 10 of the year. The show was not begging to be gawked at, I agree, but the music was beautiful.

I think that the first Yuppicide 7" is a totally underrated piece of NYHC history.

Setlist has at least a couple things wrong -- encore was History of Lovers performed by Sam, Sarah and the pedal steel player.

Also should note that Leroy Bach (formerly of Wilco) was in the band playing at least guitar and piano a la his role in Wilco.

I enjoyed the show despite being too close for comfort (2nd row center). Couldn't hear the vocals very well from so close but everything else sounded great. Agreed that they could have engaged the audience more, but the show itself was well paced with up tempo numbers in the right spots so we didn't get overly sleepy. Musicianship was solid all the way around -- really thought the drummer was exceptionally tasteful in his playing.

yes, i'm aware it's been getting good reviews, but it's seems to have been quietly getting them, as expected. there hasn't been much focus on the band in the media in general, or a real clamour for the new material as one would have thought based on his prior output, i guess maybe he's already quite big and people are focusing on "new" groups instead...and there's no doubting his music isn't gorgeous!

Does anyone know what time Daft Punk goes on?

The show was mixed a little dully for my tastes, but overall it was ok. I would have liked a little less ass from Sam, but that's cool. It was a very mellow show, nothing like his show at Webster last year with Calexico which was really raucous. I think it matters that his backing band was just not that lively (except for the crazy percussionist with his 9870987987 instruments) & Sarah is the MOST disinterested, boring performance artist EVER.

The show was a little dead, but this rendition of Sodom, South Georgia made me cry. Definitely worth it just for that.

True, Sarah was a bit wack. hah, when she didn't have any parts to sing, she tried to disappear. most times when you have a singer like that who doesn't do much else, they at least act aware that they are on a stage and act accordingly even when they aren't doing anything on a song. and yeah, Upward Over the Mountain was the highlight for me.

if you went to this show and you didn't want to see Sam with a full band, you're a fucking idiot. or haven't heard his last 3 releases. either way, your fault.

While I had not seen Iron & Wine live before, and I hadn't heard the new album, last night's concert was much more than my wife and I were expecting. Except for some inaudible lyrics (enunciate, Sam), I thought the eight musicians played beautiful, cohesive music. "i dont think sam beam should play live with a full band ever again." Seriously? Everything just seemed to fit; the songs just seemed to breathe with life. And for my tastes, there was a perfect amount of "ass to the audience jamming." That dub-like jam near the end of the set? Quite good.

Interesting to read that people thought Animal Collective's 75-minute set at Webster was too short, but Iron & Wine's full 90 plus-minute set was too long?

(Doesn't look like it was mentioned but Paul Niehaus from Calexico was on pedal steel and guitar.)
