Lance Hahn (J Church), RIP

Lance Hahn, the iconic Austin-based frontman for legendary punk band J Church, passed away yesterday (Oct. 21) from complications arising from kidney disease. His death came on the heels of a J Church/Cringer tribute/benefit album put together by several indie labels to raise money to help Hahn—who had no health insurance—pay his medical bills. [Harp]

I was a late bloomer to Cringer, but J Church was the gateway that exposed me to some of the other bands SF/Gilman scene of the 90's. Seeing J Church at Brownie's in November 2000 will always be a great memory. Even though I didn't embrace all of his politics, Lance's passion and emotion was evident in his music. From what I read on other tributes, he was a truly good guy (and even included a free out-of-print EP in my CD order last year.) RIP, Lance, and I look forward to catching you play again when we all meet again in the world beyond.

To me, J Church is the best band that nobody's heard of. From the moment I heard them in 1995 on a mix tape a friend of mine from California made me, I was hooked. I think I bought both Prophylaxis and Quetzalcoatl that summer, and have bought virtually everything Lance and the various conglomerations of J Church have put out since. I was lucky enough to see them about 5 times over the years, since they only toured the east coast about every 18 months or so, and on a couple occassions got to chat with Lance for a little while (last time they were in Atlanta, we talked about Neil Young and the riff Lance stole from Neil on the Palestine album.) I digress; the point is, if you've never heard any of his music, you owe it to yourself to check out Lance Hahn's work. The music world doesn't even know what an influential genius it lost. Yet.
