Lordi are (were) horrible (last night @ Irving Plaza)
Lordi (cred)

I'm a sucker for a good stage show - schtick or not. I like the music to be good too though. That is possible. Gwar used to be great - original, talented and creative. Somehow I tricked myself into believing that Lordi - despite not looking at all original - would play good music, and that overall it would be a good time. Hey - they're big in Europe (yeah I know, so is David Hasselhoff) - "Hardrock Halellujah" rocks like Kiss - they even won the Eurovision Award. So last night (Oct 29, 2007) I went to see them open for Type O Negative at the venue formerly known as Irving Plaza (their first NYC show I think). One word: horrible. Not even "so bad they're good" (ok, maybe that a little - sometimes I laughed). Just kind of unoriginal, cheesy (with cheap props), and bad. Luckily I was mainly there to see Type O anyway.
Worth noting at least: Twisted Sister guitarist Jay Jay French came out to play one song with Lordi (without a costume on). Twisted Sister play the same venue on December 21st. Lordi & Type O Negative play two more shows together - tonight in Philly, and at Starland Ballroom in Jersey on Halloween.

Not that it matters much, but Lordi are not big in Europe, no matter what the picture of those Cola bottles may suggest (never seen 'em before in my life). What's more, Hasselhof USED TO BE big in Germany, but thanks to you Yanks (wink) most Europeans do not live in Germany.

Lordi will eat Brooklyn Vegan.

^no, they wont

Much like the anonymous above, let me start by saying that Lordi are not big in Europe.
They might be big in Finland, their home country... but I'm not from Finland - i'm just a part of that minority of europeans who are not from Germany (I'm from tiny Portugal, to be precise).
Lordi got ephemerous fame when they took part (and won) the Eurovision Festival, a decaying festival that presents sing-along-not-that-hard-to-follow-somewhat-for-nitwits music in an almost exclusive basis.
So imagine a band as awful looking (and sounding, i can't stress that enough) as Lordi appearing in a mass televisied song contest like that...
Actually, it was quite funny, because you had that horrid demon-like make-up and costumes (hello, Halloween!) and, to top it out (non-sense style), a very cute little hat with the colours of the finnish flag.
I posted it in my blog with the Frank Zappa inspired title: "Does Humour Belong In Music?".
It's a 3 minute rollercoster of laughter, i must say. And the pyro effects and the end?! Jesus...
So, enough said about Lordi...They're a nightmare - and not only in the visual sense.
Oh!, here's the link to the video, if you decide, at your own risk - of course! -, to follow:

Then why post about them?
Posted by Anonymous | October 30, 2007 5:12 PM
Because this is his blog, and he can post what he wants. Especially if it's about a show he went to the night last night.

What do Lordi wear on Halloween? Dockers and dress shirts? Scary.

"What do Lordi wear on Halloween?"
They dress up as Amy Winehouse, just like everyone else.

They're not even a good fake GWAR. It's sad, really.

"Because this is his blog, and he can post what he wants. Especially if it's about a show he went to the night last night." Thanks for the obvious answer. Glad I missed it.

I caught the Lordi show in Knoxville.I saw it as a homage to their idols, such as Kiss,Alice Cooper,Judas Priest ect. They rocked out like they playing a stadium gig. After the show they did a meet and greet where despite their persona they were kind and gracious signing everything they handed and posing for pictures until everyone was satisfied.Like them or not they will win over America a handful at a time and will be here before you know it.

"What do Lordi wear on Halloween? Dockers and dress shirts? Scary."
that would make them Vampire Weekend. just as bad.

I wonder if the Long Island meatheads wearing Berzerker T-shirts I saw there were into them?
I kind of agree with your review of Lordi--aside from costumes, there wasn't much to the show.
Type O still puts on one of the best shows. Unlike all these whiney introspective Brooklyn bands of today, Peter Steel still knows how to work humor and stage banter into the set. All you terrible terrible art school grad bands playing loft shows in Bushwick could learn something.

I died laughing at this photo at work. Couldn't stop.

I miss the good old days when a Brooklyn band was Biohazard,Life of Agony, or Carnivore. Not the bullshit "we ran out of coke and our trust fund" shit that comes out of there today. Frail losers.

lordi looks scary compared to gwar. gwar makes me piss my self laughing, they r the cheesy ones. upuntil eurovision time this was when lordi first heard of gwar and they have been around for about the same time as each other :)

Type O is for posers like you
Lordi

GWAR is supposed to be cheesy. Ever been to one of their shows? How about even listened to one of their songs? Oh. You say you just saw them on Empire Records? Oh, ok. I understand now.
Anyway, GWAR is supposed to be cheesy. Lordi think they're serious. In that light, still feel the same about your beloved not-good-enough-to-be-fintroll mock-up bunch of wannabe Oderus Urungi?

Gwar is stupid
Lordi are better, like Kiss. There's substance to them

Oddly enough, I like GWAR and Lordi.. but maybe Im just a sucker for wierdos in costumes.. would explian why I like Slipknot, Mudvayne, Mushroomhead, Alice Cooper, Zombie, Kiss.. and just about every other band that has used this gimmick.
Anyway, from what I've seen GWAR puts on a much better show. (as do all the others listed.) but that doesn't make Lordi bad in my eyes. Just not quite as good.

"upuntil eurovision time this was when lordi first heard of gwar and they have been around for about the same time as each other :)"
gwar(1985) has been longer arround then lordi(1992) in the musicbizz that can mean alot
and lordi sucks like other said on here gwar is cheesy but thats what makes it good they don't try to be something
and then you have lordi winners of the eurosong actualy that says enough eurosong is sooooo lame give me a costume and a semi good song with some pyrotechniks and i've could win it -_-

Aww guys cmon!
Just look at Lordi and GWAR...
If you dont notice let me explain:
GWAR costumes:They look like barbarians monsters,
they are half naked...and their music is brute and you know those growlings and all that stuff.
Lordi:Their costumes is like from horror movies and their music is like those 80's shock rock.
So two thing that matches:they wear costumes(expect GWAR they wear half costumes:D)and they play rock music.
Lordi said that he never heard of GWAR before they asked them about it (me neither)just think of it, in 1992 how much people knew in Finland that GWAR exists (around 2 I guess)
and about eurovision...yeah they won it gave them a lot of popularity(even bad) so it was good and bad too.

Like it or not, Lordi have an amazing stage show, and if you don't get Lordi, you have a rod up your ass and are too serious for your own good ;)
Lighten up, like horror, and enjoy. Best band I've seen live

It's kinda sad to see all these posts about a band like lordi. I don't relly know why the fuck they get to open for ToN..guess it's all about da cash.
In Sweden lordi is most famous for Eurovision and Kids Hits records with halfbaked pop songs. I cant even recall anybody really discussing them as a real "metal/rock/whatevva" band.
So this feels kinda wierd seeing them with Type O.
GWAR rules, rather they did. And an excuse like "lordi looks cool and sounds like Kiss" is kinda lame. Listen to Kiss then, more orginial songs and make-up there.
Lordi seems selfpretentions and actually pretty lame. And lets not talk about their shitpoor excuse for a movie. Even "Kiss meets the Phantom in the Park" was better. And I like Kiss, he he.
Well, thats all from Sweden folks.
