Lordi are (were) horrible (last night @ Irving Plaza)
Lordi (cred)

I'm a sucker for a good stage show - schtick or not. I like the music to be good too though. That is possible. Gwar used to be great - original, talented and creative. Somehow I tricked myself into believing that Lordi - despite not looking at all original - would play good music, and that overall it would be a good time. Hey - they're big in Europe (yeah I know, so is David Hasselhoff) - "Hardrock Halellujah" rocks like Kiss - they even won the Eurovision Award. So last night (Oct 29, 2007) I went to see them open for Type O Negative at the venue formerly known as Irving Plaza (their first NYC show I think). One word: horrible. Not even "so bad they're good" (ok, maybe that a little - sometimes I laughed). Just kind of unoriginal, cheesy (with cheap props), and bad. Luckily I was mainly there to see Type O anyway.
Worth noting at least: Twisted Sister guitarist Jay Jay French came out to play one song with Lordi (without a costume on). Twisted Sister play the same venue on December 21st. Lordi & Type O Negative play two more shows together - tonight in Philly, and at Starland Ballroom in Jersey on Halloween.

Not that it matters much, but Lordi are not big in Europe, no matter what the picture of those Cola bottles may suggest (never seen 'em before in my life). What's more, Hasselhof USED TO BE big in Germany, but thanks to you Yanks (wink) most Europeans do not live in Germany.

Much like the anonymous above, let me start by saying that Lordi are not big in Europe.
They might be big in Finland, their home country... but I'm not from Finland - i'm just a part of that minority of europeans who are not from Germany (I'm from tiny Portugal, to be precise).
Lordi got ephemerous fame when they took part (and won) the Eurovision Festival, a decaying festival that presents sing-along-not-that-hard-to-follow-somewhat-for-nitwits music in an almost exclusive basis.
So imagine a band as awful looking (and sounding, i can't stress that enough) as Lordi appearing in a mass televisied song contest like that...
Actually, it was quite funny, because you had that horrid demon-like make-up and costumes (hello, Halloween!) and, to top it out (non-sense style), a very cute little hat with the colours of the finnish flag.
I posted it in my blog with the Frank Zappa inspired title: "Does Humour Belong In Music?".
It's a 3 minute rollercoster of laughter, i must say. And the pyro effects and the end?! Jesus...
So, enough said about Lordi...They're a nightmare - and not only in the visual sense.
Oh!, here's the link to the video, if you decide, at your own risk - of course! -, to follow:

Then why post about them?

Because this is his blog, and he can post what he wants. Especially if it's about a show he went to the night last night.

What do Lordi wear on Halloween? Dockers and dress shirts? Scary.

"What do Lordi wear on Halloween?"
They dress up as Amy Winehouse, just like everyone else.

They're not even a good fake GWAR. It's sad, really.

"Because this is his blog, and he can post what he wants. Especially if it's about a show he went to the night last night." Thanks for the obvious answer. Glad I missed it.

I caught the Lordi show in Knoxville.I saw it as a homage to their idols, such as Kiss,Alice Cooper,Judas Priest ect. They rocked out like they playing a stadium gig. After the show they did a meet and greet where despite their persona they were kind and gracious signing everything they handed and posing for pictures until everyone was satisfied.Like them or not they will win over America a handful at a time and will be here before you know it.

I wonder if the Long Island meatheads wearing Berzerker T-shirts I saw there were into them?
I kind of agree with your review of Lordi--aside from costumes, there wasn't much to the show.
Type O still puts on one of the best shows. Unlike all these whiney introspective Brooklyn bands of today, Peter Steel still knows how to work humor and stage banter into the set. All you terrible terrible art school grad bands playing loft shows in Bushwick could learn something.

I died laughing at this photo at work. Couldn't stop.

I miss the good old days when a Brooklyn band was Biohazard,Life of Agony, or Carnivore. Not the bullshit "we ran out of coke and our trust fund" shit that comes out of there today. Frail losers.
