Morrissey & Live Nation are messing with us

So, Morrissey cancelled an MSG show, and then announced 5 new NYC shows at the smaller (but still big) Hammerstein Ballroom. Tickets are & were like a gazillion dollars, and then tickets for one of those shows - the October 23rd one - were reduced to $20 (but then were really $22) (+ charges). Then the October 22nd one went down to $32.00 (+ charges), and NOW (just a few days later) the October 22nd one went down again - this time to $20 (but will it be $22?). They go on sale at the reduced rate on Tuesday October 16th @ 10am.

I'm waiting for them to reduce the price for Sunday and maybe Friday now too.
Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2007 7:59 PM

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2007 8:22 PM
i'm glad i waited. i'll keep waiting until they are handing them out at the venue for free.
Posted by ko | October 15, 2007 8:29 PM
i'll wait till they PAY me to go see him.

If people already bought tickets at the higher price, and the price for new tickets purchase get reduced, do the previous buyers get something of a proportional refund back?

I love Morrissey and grew up on a steady diet of the Smiths but with all the awesome (and cheap!) CMJ shows going on this week, he will surely be passed over by many.
After the MSG fiasco, I think I'll support some young, hungry bands: Tacks, the Boy Disaster, AIDS Wolf. Eagle*Seagull. Voxtrot, Miracle Fortress.
Sorry Moz.

^but the morrisey shows are next week

Yeah, I want it for free

This sucks, i bought tickets for saturday the day they went on sale, and now the bastard is screwing the real fans over. why should i have to pay 65+ charges when everyone going now is getting in for 20.....i love the moz's music but now i wish i would have flew out to Vegas for Daft Punk the same day... ANyone know what time their going on?
Posted by Angry Moz Fan | October 15, 2007 9:19 PM
yea sadly I have tickets to Monday and Sunday. But now ill be able to go to the friday and Saturday show if prices keep up.

I'll wait until they pay me to see him perform in my bathtub.

They pulled something similar with the Download Fest in Boston. Tickets started at $40-ish, I think, plus fees, bringing it to $50. They sold next to nothing. Then they dropped tickets to $10 plus fees and sold a handful. The total after fees was maybe $25. Then they dropped the price to "free" plus fees, bringing the total to about $5 each. The place was still empty and the lineup was incredible (Band of Horses, Wolf Parade, Neko Case, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Modest Mouse)... A number of the more devoted fans got screwed at the highest price-point though and I'm guessing were a bit turned off from future events, or at least purchasing early knowing this could happen.
Morrissey's biggest problem was announcing five days right away. Why in the world did he do that after having such a difficult time filling MSG? If he announced one date at a time at, say, $40, he probably would've sold it out and then opened another date and another date until ticket sales slowed. This is just really bad promoting and makes our asexual bastard look foolish.

Asexual? What idiot is still fooled by that whole asexual thing? This guy is as gay as they come

enough knocking Moz. It is not "HE" who actually scheduled the shows prematurely, then began discounting them. But, who is it in this case?? Is it Live Nation?
Anyone have any constructive advice regarding HOW to complain about this? True fans have been screwed on things like this before, but this is going a bit far. $75 down to $20?!! unbelievable. there should be a mass refund for sure! are they insinuating that the fans purchased tickets "too early?"
It is obvious that the show is not sold out, but i know that i am not the only one feeling shafted here. WHO and HOW is the best way to protest this? thanks all!

economically, this is genius..first degree price discrimination in action. i didnt think it was possible to sell tickets at different price points for a general admission concert, but live nation has proved me wrong.
alas though, this may however prove to be illegal. any lawyers on this board?
Posted by Anonymous | October 16, 2007 12:17 AM
people complaining are so ridiculous....this isn't the 80s anymore when people cared about the smiths/morrissey!.....i mean come on...you knew after he couldn't even sell out msg, that he would have a hard time selling out three nights probably at hammerstein!.....i mean i could have even done a better job of booking these nyc shows....yea 5 nights at hammerstein....more like 5 nights at webster hall would have been more realistic....and for all those people that waited for the tickets to drop! now is your time to celebrate and spend $20 instead of $65 hahahahaha
stupid people still spending that much money for morrissey.....
spend $65 to see bjork instead.
Posted by stop complaining! | October 16, 2007 1:01 AM
for people that bought discounted "$22" tixs for oct 23rd....were the tixs general admission floor or were there in mezz???? please let me know!
Posted by oct 23rd tixs | October 16, 2007 1:04 AM
I can't believe how easy you're letting him get off. If this were Dan Deacon you would be cursing him enough to make Andrew Dice Clay blush. This totally sucks! These aren't plane tickets!
Posted by Anonymous | October 16, 2007 1:07 AM
I got the $22 tix for general admission floor, for the Tues, 23rd show... no way was I paying 65 to see Morrissey.. I have given him enough of my money over the years! most I was going to pay was 50 tops, but 22 was right up my alley. Poor morrissey! Guess he can't retire now.

I am a big Morrissey fan but after this shit I will NEVER be attending any of his shows again. This is disrespectful to all the people who paid the complete amount in the beginning. And this goes o him too, because I'm sure he will wash his hands saying he has no control over this stuff.
Posted by Anonymous | October 16, 2007 9:10 AM
Morrissey has no control over this stuff. Moron.
Posted by Anonymous | October 16, 2007 10:16 AM
I love Morrissey and I think it's great that I may actually be able to afford to see him perform again. I also think it's funny that all you people with more money than brains are pissed about this. Do you get pissed off when people wait till the prices of the new apple ipod gizmos go down before they buy them? It's the price you pay for being an early adopter/stupid yuppie scum.
Posted by Anonymous | October 16, 2007 10:21 AM
To Oct 23rd tix: The $22 tickets for the 23rd were for floor only. I asked about mezzanine tix (so I could sit my lazy ass down) but was told that 1st mezz is VIP and 2nd is for full price tix only.
Posted by Anonymous | October 16, 2007 10:24 AM
there were definitely 1st mezz $22 for the show on the 23rd. they sold out by the next day or so, after they went on sale, and then there were 2nd mezz tix on sale for $22
Posted by Anonymous | October 16, 2007 10:36 AM
Anonymous 10:24- I got two 2nd mezz at the $22 price for 10/23, so I'd trade for your floors if you got them. Email me at tt7730@yahoo.com
Posted by JT | October 16, 2007 10:42 AM
Thanks JT - I'd love to trade but there are 3 of us.
Posted by Anonymous | October 16, 2007 11:12 AM
Why would Morrissey have no control over this? He has 100% control. He was probably presented with a few options:
-Cancel a few shows
-Play the run of shows for a reduced fee
-Try to sell more tickets at a lower rate and see how it goes, and if it still doesn't work revisit options 1 and 2.
For an egomaniac like him, option 3 is the easy choice.
Posted by Anonymous | October 16, 2007 11:22 AM
I do think every artist has control to a certain extent. It is true tat the veunue and the promote usually add as much as they want in fees, but look at what Radiohead does: they charge everyone the sam price for tickets, and that way it is fair for people to competep for tickets on a regular sale.
Fac is, Morrissey should have not booked so many shows if he had a previous bad experience with ticket sales. It only goes to show how egomaniacal he is and how ridiculous he apologies will sound form then on.
Posted by Anonymous | October 16, 2007 11:51 AM
this is going to get worse... peeps won't want to pay the expensive ticket, hoping the price will go down, then they'll cancel the event due to non-interest.
computers and ticket sales just don't mix. print a nice ticket that you can keep as a souvenir and sell them at the box office, and snail mail from the box office by phone. everything else sucks the big one.
Posted by samo hung | October 16, 2007 12:08 PM
hey anon 12:17am, price discrimination (changing the price of a ticket at a later date) is legal, the airlines do it all the time.
for anyone looking for a refund of the difference, forget it. the tickets are non-refundable and live nation wouldn't have dropped the prices if they were obligated to refund the difference to the original purchasers.

"Morrissey's biggest problem was announcing five days right away. Why in the world did he do that after having such a difficult time filling MSG?"
Because he (or his management or Live AbomiNation) thought that there were enough hardcore fans who would go to all five shows. These fans can't clone themselves and fill MSG on one night. The five-night package deal (which includes priority admission) did sell out quickly.
"computers and ticket sales just don't mix. print a nice ticket that you can keep as a souvenir and sell them at the box office, and snail mail from the box office by phone. everything else sucks the big one."
You must have done too many drugs to remember the bad old days before tickets were sold over the Internet. Waiting overnight outside in the cold and rain at the box office? Trying to get through to Ticketbastard on the phone? Being shut out of all the good seats by scalpers who had staff to buy tickets for them? No, thanks.
Posted by Anonymous | October 16, 2007 1:25 PM
Is there anything in the ticketmaster buyer's agreement noting that the price is subject to change? Airlines can get away with this because it's built into the agreement one enters into at the time of purchase, but I really don't know whether or not it applies to entertainment ticketing. Someone with a lot of free time might want to take up the issue.
Either way, it's looking pretty bad for Mo. Of course, this could've all been avoided by doing a couple of things, be it lower ticket prices from the beginning or announcing one date at a time until enough tickets were sold to justify another date. Hell, he could've played a smaller venue. Again, lousy promoting.
Posted by Anonymous | October 16, 2007 1:41 PM
dude, the price of anything can be legally changed at a future date (up or down) without any warning...the whole idea of a "sale" would never exist otherwise.
department stores discount poor selling merchandise, grocery stores have weekly sales, etc...
illegal price discrimination can only occur if different prices are being charged to different people at the same time for the same thing. even then, there are many exceptions to the law.
Posted by jd | October 16, 2007 1:59 PM
Maybe in a retail store, fine, but you're forgetting that tickets fall into a completely different category of items. ::insert obligatory "dude" here::
Posted by Anonymous | October 16, 2007 2:32 PM
I wasn't saying it's ILLEGAL to change the price of things, and I'm well aware that discriminatory pricing is the best way to receive the maximum return for your product. However, it is generally understood that some things are priced at a fixed rate and some things are priced on a sliding or un-fixed rate. Other than TKTS and shit like that, concert tickets have a price, and people understand that to be the price. If Live Nation opens up the flood gates to this sort of pricing, I hope they are ready to take the bad with the good.

It was just announced that Madonna has a $25 million investment in Live Nation as part of her new deal.
Posted by Anonymous | October 16, 2007 4:21 PM
The shows are stiffs and the Morrissey camp is just making sure the room looks very busy, so he doesn't have a hissy fit and cancel the shows. In order to get paid, he has to play the dates. Live Nation are taking a bath and by lowering the ticket price, they get more people in the venue that drink. They get the bar, Mozzer doesn't.
Posted by Anonymous | October 16, 2007 7:39 PM
Let's see: The scalpers get screwed and I get to see Morrissey for $22 + fees. I think it was a great idea! People don't complain when other retail items go on sale such as clothes, cars, food, airline tix etc. It's the same thing. Why are music fans such whiners? Go and enjoy the show. So some people had to pay a lottle more. Big deal.
Posted by Anonymous | October 16, 2007 11:58 PM
"People don't complain when other retail items go on sale such as clothes, cars, food, airline tix etc."
A notable exception are the crybabies who complained when Apple dropped the price of the iPhone $200. One dipshit even filed a class action lawsuit.
Posted by Anonymous | October 17, 2007 12:48 AM
Why do any of you people care if these or any other shows sell out? I would love to go to a show at Hammerstein that is not sold out considering how they pack in as many people as possible. I'm just happy The Moz is giving everyone a chance to see him as opposed to playing one show at MSG. As for the $22 tickets, BUY ONE and go to a great show!
Posted by Anonymous | October 17, 2007 1:13 AM
"computers and ticket sales just don't mix."
You have no clue!
Posted by Anonymous | October 17, 2007 1:20 AM
Anything that fucks the scalpers on Craigslist I am all for!
Posted by Anonymous | October 17, 2007 1:35 AM
Jason from PRODUCT SHOP NYC says "Besides being spectacularly unfair to the diehard Morrissey fans who rushed out to get tickets, this makes you wonder why they don't just cancel two of the five gigs and honor the tickets on the other nights........."
Well put.
Posted by Anonymous | October 17, 2007 2:09 AM
Because Live Nation (which operates Hammerstein) makes more money by selling the $20 tickets and filling up the place with people who will probably also buy a few drinks than they do by cancelling 2 shows and having to issue full price refunds.
Cancelling 2 shows wouldn't exactly be nice to "diehard" Morrissey fans either, especially after some of them bought 5 night passes.
Stop whining because the prices went on sale -- there just aren't enough Morrissey fans to fill up Hammerstein all 5 nights at full price.
Posted by Anonymous | October 17, 2007 11:12 AM
Well, not only did I pay full price for my Monday ticket, but I also paid full price for a Saturday night which I can't use because we're going away for the weekend.
Anyone want to buy a Saturday Mozz Mezz1 ticket on the cheap?

Morrissey was amazing out here on the west coast!!! $22??? A bargain at twice the price.

I'd pay $65 only if the show was 35 years old and up so I wouldn't have to stand next to asshole kids who wear checkered ties and Ray Bans wishing to revive the 1980s that they missed out on.

I paid $22 plus fees for GA last night (Monday), but I should probably pay another $22 plus fees because I got pretty hammered and don't remember much except it sounded really good and we all thought Richard Burton was Morrissey at first.
BTW, EXCELLENT opener in the form of Kristeen Young. That girl can ENTERTAIN. Sounds of Bjork and Kate Bush melded into one. Too bad she fell back on recorded keyboards when she stepped away from her own and just took the mike to sing. But she was great. I remember more of her because I wasn't drunk yet :-)
