NAS's new album title
Nas is calling his new album "Nigger" (not "Nigga") - a term this is symbolically illegal in NYC, and NYC is the one putting up the biggest fight....
Behemoth record label Universal Music Group must change the name of rapper Nas’s new album, “Nigger,” or risk losing $84 million in state investments, a Fort Greene assemblyman said this week.Nas told Rolling Stone he'll stick with the name anyway, even if...“[They are] profiting from a racial slur that has been used to dehumanize people of color for centuries,” said Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries (D–Fort Greene), a former entertainment industry big-wig. [Brooklyn Paper]
“It’s probably going to make people uncomfortable. I don’t expect a lot of people to sell a record called Nigger. Hopefully, people can open their minds up and lose some of their fear and deal with it. It’s just an album. It’s one piece of the many things I do, and this will be one of my favorite pieces.” And his label is firmly behind him, “It will be certain record stores that will be scared to deal with it. The record label is gung ho, and it’s ready to go.”50 Cent says Nas sucks. Some say it's just a publicity stunt. What do you say?

doesn't he need to sound more like the rolling stones or something?

nas just keeps coming up with the album titles that are going to get people riled up.

i think nj doesn't promote censorship.

he's not the first rapper to use the n-word in an album title, so i'm not quite sure what the stink is all about.
Posted by mat | October 30, 2007 4:25 PM
I think this is really cool. As long as people fear the word it will keep its value and strength. if it just becomes another word it loses all of its power to harm.
Posted by Anonymous | October 30, 2007 4:29 PM
50 Cent drops the n-word every five minutes, how does his opinion hold any merit? I'm sick of that fucking stooge getting press every five minutes just because he opens his mouth.

excuse me, do you have Nigger?... can you check in the back?

N-I-G, G-A-R!! It's the Niggar family!!
Posted by Dave Chapelle | October 30, 2007 4:58 PM
I think it's fine. He's an artist and is entitled to express himself however he wants. Whether the word is used in the title or in the songs (as it is used in many songs) is meaningless to me. He's obviously not intending to use the word to promote hate, and using the word in his title is not empowering it by any means.
The word "Nigger" exists, whether people want it to or not. While it is a loaded word...it's only a word.

great title, perfect for nas and the issues he explores. good for him and good for the label if they really are gung-ho

I'm still outraged over Meshell NDegeocello making a song called Leviticus Faggot. Now this??

His next album is scheduled to be controversial titled Global Warming is For Real, Ya'll.
No but seriously, this just one big marketing scheme. We seen him do this with Hip-Hop is Dead and people who forgot Nas was even alive went and bought it. He can go and name all his albums controversial titles but it still won't make up for the fact that he's always going to be looked at as "that guy who made Illmatic and never got past that."

Finally, white people can buy a Nigger again.

Hi, all.
What's the big deal with this story anyway? I mean, if Nas is doing it for publicity, OK (although, that's really not his style). If he's genuine in the statement he's trying to make, cool. I can go to any number of Web sites, book stores, songs and homes and witness the word 'nigger' being used in a variety of ways. It all depends on how you use it, right? No one's forcing folks to buy his CD or listen to a track. Just tune him out. That's what black people have to do with all the racial prejudice they encounter everyday -- tune it out, case it's not illegal to hate someone for the color of their skin. And, by the by, why isn't anyone mentioning popular books that use the word 'Nigger' in their titles -- like the marvelous autobiography by Dick Gregory and the countless others which I haven't read?
They exist. See Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/104-5454227-4296743?initialSearch=1&url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=nigger&x=0&y=0
Posted by HaroldMaude | October 30, 2007 11:26 PM
why is it only acceptable when black people use the term. if this was say, kenny chesney's album title, he'd be the next osama bin laden. either don't use it at all, or stop bitching about it when others say the word.
Posted by Anonymous | October 31, 2007 8:05 AM
And don't say "honkey" either. That also offends black people.
Posted by Anonymous | October 31, 2007 9:06 AM
Anon 8:05- I cannot express how hilarious it would be if Kenny Chesney named his album this.
Posted by Anonymous | October 31, 2007 9:33 AM
sorry, but it IS different when black people and white people use it (the word).
You're really just an idiot if you don't see this.

is it less bad? does it not mean the exact same thing? is BET racist? what about black-only fraternities/sororities, scholarships, clubs, "culture centers"? i feel like anything based SOLELY on race happens to be RACIST. white or black.

If you want to hypothesize an analogy with Kenny Chesney, consider the significance of Kenny Chesney titling his album "Cracker."
Oh, wait, there was a band called Cracker and they had a song titled "Cracker Soul" and no one blinked.

Speaking of 'cracker', check this Daily News article out: http://tinyurl.com/yrwb7r
Boss' [sic] 'cracker' cracks cost him $150G
BY HELEN KENNEDY
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
Friday, August 24th 2007, 4:00 AM
A white man from Buffalo who said his black boss called him "cracker" and "stupid white boy" has won a $150,000 judgment in a reverse racial discrimination case.
Mark Pasternak, 48, said he left his job as a youth aide for the state Office of Child and Family Services after being verbally abused for three years by his boss, Tommy Baines.
An all-white seven-member federal jury - the eighth panelist, who was black, fell ill just before deliberations - found that Baines discriminated against Pasternak.
"It's still overwhelming," Pasternak said of the verdict, which came Tuesday after nearly a decade of legal struggle. "They called it reverse racism, but for me, I thought all along it was just plain racism."
Pasternak's black coworkers backed his claims he had been hounded with racial slurs and crude insults. Baines was fined $2,000 in 1998 after a state probe, but stayed on as a supervisor.
Pasternak, who fled an abusive father and grew up in a state group home, had been ministering to the kind of troubled youth he used to be.
"We were always taught that any type of racism, slurs - it was always looked upon as evil," he said.
His lawyer, David Seeger, acknowledged it was an unusual case.
"As a civil rights lawyer, I know how hard it is to win discrimination suits and how rough African-Americans have it. I think it's important to remember that," he said.
Pasternak now works as a freight conductor.
Posted by Anonymous | October 31, 2007 11:00 AM
$150,000 and "Pasternak now works as a freight conductor" stand out to me. Seems kind of trivial.

Um, his last album was called "Hip Hop is Dead". His style is all publicity whore.
Nas is like Madonna, a much better publicist than a musician.

that is soooooo right. thank you!

NAS is one of the few recording artists that actually has something important to say, instead of spewing senseless bullshit. It happens all the time that an oppressed group attains some level of stability, then turns on it's liberators with fear and condemnation if they "stir it up". This is due to their perceived comfort level, which is actually only an illusion. If it wasn't, NAS wouldn't have had to make the album.
Posted by crazy mike | November 1, 2007 3:00 PM
Publicity, are you serious?!? If that was the case, then wouldn't he put out a lame booty shaking album like 50? How is something blatantly unpopular done for publicity. I think some of you need to look the word up in a dictionary.

Hip-Hop is one of the greatest things that ever happend to us black people and Nas is one of the best things that ever happend to Hip-Hop. He is the greatest MC of all time. I dont understand when a white man who has no clue about hip-hop comes in and trys to talk shit. How can u give an opinon on something u have no understanding for. That is similer to someone who has no clue about art trying to argue that Picasos paintings was bad. IF U DONT KNOW,MIND YOUR OWN. People r tryin to kill HIP HOP but u cant kill us cus WE R HIP HOP.Nas do u thing (fuck the money and all this bullshit its all about love)

nas is prolific and has gotten to the point in his career where he has no need to prove anything. by naming his album nigger, he exposes the hate this country tries to hide. he stands for the struggle and progress of blacks in this country. what we need to do is go out in mass numbers and buy the album. if you dont get down witn nas you either under 21, or your not paying attention to your surroundings. peace

Nas is the illest rapper alive, fuck all u hatin nigga's who talk alot of shit wen a black man is at the top. The word "nigga" is used everyday by black people, and rappers. Even a famous book is called Nigger, but I aint hear shit about the guy who publish it. Nas is the illest
dosnt matter what he calls it
its gonna be a classic
Posted by Trix | November 10, 2007 4:25 PM
You know what...Screw NAS...I checked out after illmatic also...He's only ever produced one good song his entire career and that was "The World is yours". It's really sad that artist now days need to use tactics like this to sell records.
Whites can't use this word and neither should us blacks...People seem to forget it's meaning...Nas is from NYC..he should freaking no better...You would never hear a southern rap artist name a song or album titled that....They know better...cause there mother of father would kick their ass.
Posted by Rod | November 10, 2007 4:52 PM
rod.. you have absolutely terrible grammar and also have no clue what you're talking about. i'm taking a wild guess that you haven't listened to nas explain WHY he is calling the album that? there is a legitimate reason beyond shock, and if you took the time to look into something you talk about like you know everything about it, then you would be saying something very, very different.
Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2007 5:23 PM
Nas is the greatest rapper ever regardless of what everybody think. I'm from the south and I know that all the bad mouth and hating coming from us cause we don't understand shit but dancing, trapping, and fucking. Grow up and open up your mind then you will see that Nas is the educator of black people threw his music, he is for the young people doing better not selling dope like T.I, jeezy, joc, and lil wayne the artist yall love.
Posted by romy | November 12, 2007 11:07 PM
I don't know what's the fuss about. Anyone that knows anything about Nas, knows very well that his album will be centered around the hypocracy, misogny, racism, and social status of our society. NIGGER...is a part of history, not just black history but WORLD HISTORY. On top of that...for all the critics (radio/news) programs who feels that he's using this to profit off the word. What does that say about authors who write books with Nigger in the title? Exactly...I'm too smart for these bitches. lol

I only read half of the comments so this is not directed to everyone that commented. But I cant take it anymore. Like 99% of the worlds people have absolutely no mental capacity. Stop taking shit for face value. Peeps on here saying, 'Oh, its just a marketing or publicity stunt. Forget all that, as we see, stunts dont always work, 50 Cent wack ass tried to do it hard with his last album, and you can see that didn't work. Foxxy Brown is in Rikers, do you think that will make her album sell more this December than if she was out free. No. When you talking about artist like NAS, you have to think like a thinker, which means you have to use your brain and decipher what he is trying to tell the masses. NAS knows that he reaches a mass amount of people on the earth. There are specific reasons why he called his last album 'Hip Hop is Dead' and it wasn't a publicity stunt. The title of the album didn't help him sell more, he sold albums because of the content of the album, not just because he named his album that. The true hip hop supporters, we know what NAS brings to the culture, so we anticipate good music coming from this artist, and that is the sole reason why we buy his albums and why he will sell regardless of what he calls his album. He could title it 'CRACKER', or 'White Boy' or 'Honky' or even 'Redneck', it wouldn't matter, he still going to sell because he is a real artist with real lyrics, that talks real issues about real life. Listen to the message that he is trying to send before you think you already know what is being done.
Posted by Metaphysic Divine | November 19, 2007 2:39 PM
i say this ...all you haters ...you have no intelligence period.
second of all ..yes nas will sell regardless...if he named his album shitty booty mcgee, he'd sell . so fuck all the bullshit ...you wont know what hes talkin about unless you buy the album..so yeah ..buy the album and open up yalls fuckin minds and THINK about what hes talkin about!. its knowledge people! matter of fact...GET EVERY ALBUM because theres a message and a movement behind each and EVERYONE OF THEM! even the mix tapes!. if you have to be high to listen to him and understand it ..DO IT! cuz yall dont know what yall are missing ...i have 1000% compation for people who says nas sucks...damn ... God should strike yall niggas( o my bad...NIGGERS) with a lightening rod! and im black ..and everyone uses this word...hes gettin the power out of the word so it will just become a word....closed minded muhfuckas.
nas for ever!
Posted by dre | November 27, 2007 1:51 PM
Nas is NOT doing this as a damn plubicity stunt. 50 cent sucks, so he really shouldn't open is his mouth. Nas is doing this to take the sting out of the word. I think it's very wise. I am a 21 year old white male from NJ and I like to say the N-word, but never in the racist fasion. I use it in definition sense. I hate when people take it into offense, but they are the ignorant ones who don't realize the truth. I'm tired of having to explain that I'm not racist everytime i say the damn word. I personally can't wait until the album comes out, because I want to go into Best Buy and ask for the album, and if someone swings on me, it'll most likely being a revolution to overthrow the racist minds in America that use that word improperly. I'm sure others will end up doing the same thing all around the country. It's now time to stand with an artist ready to stand for something worth standing for.

First of all nas is the most creative rapper ever. He has fame and money certainly this cannot be his sole motivation. He unlike 99% of the rap industry rap about something significant, not just money drugs cars and women. Why can an artist say Nigga 50 million times ON the album and it be ok but if it's IN the title it's a problem? Why don't you lames listen to what he has to say and then make a judgement.
Posted by Optimum | December 1, 2007 10:15 AM
wow... i don't know how ignorant one can get more than that, especially hes black himself. seriously, this just provides one more excuse for em white kids to say the N word while buying the CD.
hey Nas, u really wanna stick to it? why not get a swastika and confederate flag on the cover. "that will help people get over their fears and deal with it"

I love Nas for using his rights to the First Ammendment to it's fullest capapcity. He's an absolute genius. I dont see what the big deal is. There are albums that are over repetitive with the word in each song. Why is it any different that word is being used as a title? Or maybe its the way the word is spelt, but I never fuly understood that either. There is no difference between NIGGER and NIGGA. The only difference is da way its pronounced - u say to-may-toe, I say to-ma-toe - same thing. Folks should stop trying to make up excuses to use this word as an affeciontionate way for calling their peers. No one even knows where the word originated from. What does it truly mean? In my opinion it is only a word just like any curse word that is turned around in order to create some significance. Its the way one reacts to the word is what makes it earn its meaning. If we continue to fight the word then people will continue to push it on us. If the first reaction of the first person who called a black person a Nigger was inresponsive, then the word would have never succeeded for the white man as a belittlement to the black man. Think about that. We can change the meaning of any word, just by the way we react to it. Maybe this is what Nas is trying to teach us. What if a white person had named his Album "Nigger"? How would we react to that? Isn't it obvious that there is some underlying message that Nas is trying to show us? Or perhaps it is just a marketing scheme. How will you ever know unless you listen to the album? It hasn't even come out yet and everyone is already is on their highest critique. If someone like Eric Michael Dyson were to come out with a book entitled "Nigger", then we would automatically know that there was a point to this, but why don't we assume thing about Nas? Is it because hes come out with songs like 'Shoot em up"? Nas is an artist. This means that there is symbolism and expression in all his projects.

The only difference is da way its pronounced - u say to-may-toe, I say to-ma-toe - same thing. if anyone even thinks about saying Nas sux u have no fucking clue wat u r talking about. If u stopped listening after illmatic, thats ur loss. Nas is the greatest lyrical emcee to ever get in the game, and if u wanna talk down to him u just look stupid yourself. Nas has earned the right to name his album watever he damn well pleases. He obviously has a reason for naming the album "Nigger", and if u listen to the album u will realize y.

hes not profiting off the word, no one is gonna buy the album cuz its called nigger, they're gonna buy it because its NAS and he is a genius and if anyone actually listens to his lyrics hes is one of the least racist most educated rappers

While the title may be controversial, I think Nas is doing the right thing. He's a lyrical genius.
Think beyond the beats and you'll understand him.

THE G.O.A.T. Lyrically, yall should know nas is not stupid, that word can be use as a weapon or as a greeting, ie; whatz up nigger. Please!! buy nas album because he is one of our least rappers thats smart in talks about something more than snap your fingers, I get money, and selling drugs. You can talk about what you went thru but dont make it seem ok to do. buy the album and stop hating.
Posted by Anonymous | January 10, 2008 4:59 AM
why is everyone going crazy about this, he is one of the greatest rappers of all time, and this is what he's getting for naming his album nigger?
this isnt right
Posted by Nik | January 10, 2008 9:38 PM
tell me why white people are telling nas he can't say "nigger"
Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2008 11:15 PM
let's all just get along. please proof read your response. if you can't spell or use correct grammer please keep you comments to yourself. i think nas should...... not read any of these comments, better yet why don't we all mind our own business.
p.s. hooked on phonics has worked for people.

anyone who thinks nas aint good shouldnt even be listening to hip hop.

Nas is the BEST rapper alive today. What do you mean he sucks? If you think that then you have no taste in hip hop/rap music whatsoever
Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2008 7:30 PM
considering he is the truth ,very intellectual. The title is gonna cause problems but i like it not because of the harm it might cause because he is trully one of the few people that are left that care about hip hop and tries to tell people of his color and all races to pick a bloody book up! He is genius and the best rapper alive no question...lyrically and heart he is 2nd to none and if ye have a problem with him u aren't open minded and prolly are stuck in the south where music has become nothing but club music etc.(outkast and scarface)!

GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU WHO AGREED ON THIS ALBUM NO MATTER WHAT HE SAID!!! THAT WILL NEVER TAKE THE STING OUT OF THAT WORD. REMEMBER A LOT OF BLACK PEOPLE DIED FROM THAT WORD, RENT SOME FUCKING SLAVE MOVIES YOU DUMB FUCKS. SO ALL OF YOU WHO WANT TO MAKE A CHANGE IN THE WORLD DO SOMETHING RADICAL, WRITE A LETTER AND GET PRAYER BACK IN SCHOOL.
BUT WHEN THE FIRST WHITE PERSON CALLS YOU A NIGGER AND YOU THINK THAT WELL NAS SAID IT IS OK....THEN YOU WILL REALIZE YOU ARE SUPPORTING THE WRONG FUCKING CAUSE. WAKE UP....ONCE SOMEONE IN RAP SAYS SOMETHING EVERYONE JUMPS TO WHAT THEY SAY!!! NAS, HAS FELL OFF AND I HOPE HE LOOSES ALL RESPECT AFTER THIS ONE.
