"The plan's third component would mean the end of the current incarnation of the World's Most Famous Arena: The existing Madison Square Garden would be razed, and a new one would be built along Ninth Ave." [Daily News]

It's refreshing to see our tax dollars going towards something that we really need.

Christ...

I've been to tons of arenas and think MSG is by far the best one I've ever been too. For example, I've seen Roger Waters at the Wachovia in Philly, the Civic Center in Providence, and MSG twice. The Philly and Providence shows seemed like shitty rehearsals compared to MSG.

Arenas are an awful place to see a show, but when push comes to shove I love MSG

I like MSG (especially the bar that gives you big pretzel sticks with your beer), but this will be the 5th MSG to be built. Guess it's an inevitibility to get a new MSG every 40 years or so.

At least it will be square again.

Maybe the Knicks will get some mojo back.

With all the different incarnations, the current one does have some pretty big history. Elvis Live at MSG is a classic album.

The Daft Punk show at MSG was mindblowing.

When you have good seats at MSG, it's awesome. But I saw Radiohead from the nosebleeds and vomited halfway through the show. Maybe it was the vicodin though. All I know is that show sucked baaaad.

Daft Punk should play for the Knicks. And only Daft Punk. So basically, Daft Punk would be the entire team.

And then Air should be drafted by the Bulls.

everyone needs to pay attention to the verbs.. this isnt a done deal, just people proposing plans.

I went to Wrestlemania 10 at MSG.

I may not remember a thing about it, but it was one of the highlights of this, or any lifetime.

the rumor is that the new msg will be in the old post office building. these rumors are pretty much in the beginning stages and a deal like this won't likely happen for years to come

I saw KISS at MSG.

hahahahahaha

i saw sgt slaughter vs hulk hogan there during the persian gulf war.

arcade fire rulezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Isn't that post office a historic landmark or something? Not to mention they are working on renovating it NOW and still aren't done. Such a good plan to spend tons of money on fixing something you are planning on tearing down.

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2007 12:40 PM

Daft Punk played MSG?

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2007 12:41 PM

please tear that shithole down, quickly.

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2007 12:42 PM

Maybe they'll also tear down Isiah Thomas.

My dad saw Led Zeppelin at MSG in September of 1970. One of the best shows they ever played.

Other historic events at MSG IV:

8/xx/69 Jackson 5's first television appearance
11/27-28/69 The Rolling Stones record 'Get Yer Ya Ya's Out'
8/1/71 Concert for Bangladesh
6/10/72 Elvis records 'As Recorded at Madison Square Garden' and 'An Afternoon in the Garden'
8/30/72 John Lennon records 'Live in New York City'
7/27-29/73 Led Zeppelin record 'The Song Remains the Same'
10/xx/74 Frank Sinatra performs "The Main Event" comeback show
11/24/74 John Lennon makes his last concert appearance at an Elton John show
5/14/88 Atlantic Records' 40th Anniversary featuring a reunited Led Zeppelin

I liked the original Penn Station. MSG is an eyesore and arena concerts are too damn big.

Somebody once said:
"we used to enter New York City like Kings… now we scurry in like rats."

hey FRX, don't forget Pink Floyd's 4 sold-out shows in July of '77 on the Animals tour.

"11/27-28/69 The Rolling Stones record 'Get Yer Ya Ya's Out'"

That is one of the first concerts recorded with a mobile recording unit.

Never knew that is where Lennon's last concert appearance was.

Nuke^^^ was at the first Pink Floyd show of the Animals tour at MSG on 7/1/77.

As the lights dimmed and the recorded screams that intro'd "Sheep" began to play, a loud explosion (of the M80 style - not the only time that evening) went off somewhere in the darkened arena. I could not tell if the subsequent screams were from the audience, or part of the audio from the stage. One of the eeriest concerts I've ever attended.

Oh yeah, the Floyd played the complete of Animals, WYWH and 2 song encore from DSOFTM.

I saw Morrissey at MSG arena in 1991, his first solo tour, 11th row center.

Also saw Madonna at the arena in 2004 from nosebleed, but had a great pair of 10x zoom binoculars; the sightlines at MSG were so good I could see her tonsils without zooming. Used the same binoculars for Romeo & Juliet w/ Anna Netrebko at the Met - during the floating bed scene I used the zoom function and saw a lot more than I ever did of Madonna. :-P

as long as we're listing long sold-out stints, I'll add these as well:

June 1977: Led Zeppelin sell out six nights w/ no publicity

June/July 2000: Bruce Springsteen sells out 10 nights and records 'Live in New York City'

January-April 2006: Billy Joel sells out 12 nights and records '12 Gardens Live'

Elton John has also sold out 60 nights at MSG throughout his career.

Springsteen, Joel, and John each have a banner hanging in the Garden with their name and number of sold out shows.

my mom gave BIRTH to me at MSG, 1983.

Posted by Madison | October 24, 2007 2:02 PM

what time does Daft Punk go on at the new incarnation of MSG?

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2007 2:05 PM

are all the good venues in town closing?

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2007 2:17 PM

1984 - Judas Priest fans riot when concert ends.

Halford and Co. are banned for life from Garden.

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2007 2:25 PM

The Sigur Ros show at the Theater (Paramount, Felt Forum, WaMu, whatever it's called now) had Billy Joel playing in the arena upstairs. You could all the people stamping their feet. SR commented on it during the show.

drewo-I was at the july 4, 1977 show-the scary part was that someone was throwing m80's at the giant Pig.

I was at one of the June 77 led zep shows -they sucked.

Posted by ht | October 24, 2007 2:51 PM

ht: at the end of the those 4 nights of indoor (audience-supplied) fireworks at MSG, you can understand why Roger Waters wanted to call it quits on the massive Floyd tours.

Posted by drewo | October 24, 2007 3:09 PM

every time someone mentions daft punk in comment a dead horse gets beat.

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2007 3:32 PM

drewo -yeap actually have you heard the boot leg from canada at the July 6th show. Roger lets the person in the audience have it for throwing fireworks. He stops during pigs on the wing, you hear one go off and tells them to go outside cause he wants to play a song and some people might want to hear it. its classic

Wrestlemania 10 was amazing. Razor Ramone and Shawn Michaels in the ladder match was unreal, as was Owen Hart upsetting his brother Brett. My brother and I split the pay-per-view cost, and I have not done that since.

i dont understand why people hate on arena shows. If your an arena band, do an arena show. A good arena show can kick ass and i've had alot of fun. A bad arena show, Interpol, cat power and whatever that other band was is an example of a bad arena show.

Everytime I go to a MSG show my butt gets wet because I sit down in pee when I go poop. I could fire off 20 turds in a row at my apartment but would still have to go BM as soon as I get to the Garden. Something about that place gets my intestines moving.
