the New Pornographers played Webster Hall (2007)

But Neko is to the New Pornographers' array of harmonizing vocalists what a good concertmaster is to an orchestral string section, or a good lead trumpet player is to a big band -- she is the point, the focus of the sound; she sets the time and the phrasing and the rest of it by being so strong up top that everyone else can't help but fall into place. And she does this even when things get totally fucked up........The other highlight was the appearance of part-time Pornographer Dan Bejar, who usually contributes three or four tunes to each record but almost never tours with them. The indie rock blogosphere clearly favors Bejar -- who plays the charismatic, idiosyncratic louche -- over Carl Newman, the dependable, somewhat dorky pop craftsman. As an unreconstructed dork, I know where my allegiances lie, but I also really like the contrast between the impeccable Newman songs and the looser, weirder Bejar songs..... "And she does this even when things get totally fucked up........"

Did she experience technical difficulties again last night? That seems to keep happening to her.

Will Dan and Neko be there tonight?

Posted by Anonymous | October 25, 2007 9:05 AM

what time did they go on last night? til when?

Posted by Anonymous | October 25, 2007 9:08 AM

came on at 10, finished around 11:45.

dan and neko will both be there tonight. overall, they were good last night, if somewhat predictable. 2 encores, that was cool! no real technical problems beyond some slight feedback on neko during a song or two. sound was bit much on the bass and not enough on carl's guitar. dan's songs were the best! they played damn near all of his new pornos tunes.... Dan 9:21, i saw Emma Pollock. she was ok, i wouldn't go nuts to try and catch her tonight. NPs put on a nice solid show, it was awesome to get to see Bejar, definitely was the highlight for me.
re: Neko and the feedback issues, going back to the Bowery show/thread, they apparently have their own sound crew that sets up for them - perhaps it's time for them to reconsider that. i know it was just a couple of instances but it was incredibly distracting, especially on a song like "Challengers." maybe they should just let the venues take care of things, that seems to work fine for the vast majority of other bands.
Anyone have a set list?

Show was great last night....it was sweet to see them all together...and they had a strings section with them! I've seen variations without Neko and/or Dan which have been great, but they add so much to the mix.

We got there in time to see Emma Pollock...enjoyable.

i saw the first of the two Chicago shows and i thought Emma Pollock was amazing. bought her CD right afterwards.

i thought the NP's were great. i knew Neko would be there but it was such a pleasant surprise to have the Destroyer dude there.

i would highly recommend everyone to go them...although the new record especially takes a few listens before it really catches you.

2 openers were ok. tonight it's going to be immaculate machine and emma again (kathryn and kurt played with her as well).

The NPs were wonderful, but the consistent mic feedback on Neko really took a lot of enjoyment out of the evening.

any help on times would be totally appreciated. have been screwed over webster hall in past... with their having a rock show over by 11 on a friday night.

Posted by Anonymous | October 25, 2007 11:49 AM

They came on at 10. The sound was pretty bad--too bassy, and when Carl and Neko harmonize, you could not hear Carl at all. And the feedback. I personally would have preferred to hear more old songs--I'm not a fan of the new album.

I can't believe all of the positive feedback! New Pornographers are one of my favorite bands and they sure did drop the ball last night. There was no energy on stage, it seemed like the band did not want to be there, and the sound blew. Technically they were perfect, but boring. What a major let down from a great band.

NOT ENOUGH on Carl's guitar? You are mad. It drowned out everything else.

Hey Anonymous at 11:49 .. I showed up at the Fridaynight Okkervil River show last month at something like 9:30pm -- seemingly plenty of time to catch the headliner on a Friday night -- and found myself entering during the end of their 4th (!) song. I couldn't believe it .. I've been going to shows in NYC for 20 years, and I've never missed any part of a headliner because they went on too early. I friggin' hate Webster .. hate it .. hate ..

You know, honestly, I'd love to have shows that end by 11..... ON WEEKNIGHTS. Honestly, is there a *reason* weeknight rock shows need to emulate weekend shows?? If shows actually started semi-on-time, there wouldn't need to be all of this hemming and hawing about what time people might be going on in relation to doors (30 min? 60 min? 90 min?).

But I think Webster is taking its cue from Boston rock clubs: on the weekends, clear out early to make room for gelled-up douchebags. On weekdays, when that might actually be convenient, act like a rock club and make sure you're not hope before 12:30.

And I don't even mind getting out early on a weekend by itself, as long as the venue doesn't truncate the show, or make everyone go out of a couple of very tiny exits (and then yell at you for stopping on the sidewalk for even a second to find your lost-in-the-throngs friends), or start playing the douchebaggy club music or '80s prom crap DURING the headlining band... all or most of which Webster definitely does.

But apparently I'm far from alone in my Webster hate so I feel a little better.

did Dan and Neko do the whole tour?

Posted by Anonymous | October 25, 2007 7:12 PM

show was amazing last night...

who was the guy they brought out during the first encore??? feel like it's someone I should know, but didn't recognize...

Posted by Anonymous | October 26, 2007 8:34 AM

it was gordon gano, the dude from the violent femmes.

Posted by Anonymous | October 26, 2007 9:16 AM

And then they did an unscheduled second encore. And it was 'Letter from an Occupant.' I can now die happy.

Posted by TheNB | October 26, 2007 10:33 AM

the show was great, but webster hall sucks! I will never go to another show there. Having that loud bass playing during such a great show was ridiculus.

Posted by Anonymous | October 26, 2007 11:03 AM

Great great show. I cannot say enough. The thumping bass coming from dowstairs was ridiculous though.

I generally like Webster hall but after that BS, I won't go back either.

Posted by banjoandro | October 26, 2007 11:49 AM

the "party music" throbbing from below *all* throughout the set was horrendous. I hate you, webster hall.

i would have preferred to go to terminal 5. There. I said it.

Posted by anon | October 26, 2007 1:34 PM

anyone have a set list for the 25th?

Posted by Anonymous | October 26, 2007 5:46 PM

Rigby (IIRC, his first name is Paul), who along with Kathryn joins Emma Pollack for her last song, is a guitar tech for the NP's on this tour and joins them for a couple of songs, is one of the guitarists (the other being Jon Rauhouse) in Neko's latest touring band.

Posted by Anonymous | October 26, 2007 6:37 PM

dammit! sweet licks paul was playing with them? :( i should've gone.

Posted by gopster | October 26, 2007 6:44 PM

I agree with Matt. At least for the Wednesday night Webster Hall show, NP played with the thoughtless competence that comes from lots of practice. And the enthusiasm of another day at the office. It was kinda boring.
