Ozzy in concert in Canada - Oct 27, 2007 (CRED)
Ozzy concert

Roughly forty Ozzy Osbourne fans invited to a pre-party before the Ozzy/Rob Zombie concert in Fargo, North Dakota, were greeted with an unexpected surprise: Handcuffs! In what has to be the best sting operation since To Catch a Predator, invitations were sent out to people who ignored court summons, didn’t pay child support, failed to pay fines, etc. Approximately forty Ozzy fans (or Rob Zombie fans, to be fair) responded to the invite and attended the bash, which was held at the concert venue by PDL Productions. Little did they know, PDL stood for “Paul D. Laney,” a county sheriff, and that all those meaty guys wearing PDL T-shirts were actually deputy sheriffs, probation officers and local DEA members. Rather than boozing, the miscreants who showed up got arrested on outstanding warrants. “It was more of a warrant party,” Laney joked. Some on the cuffed end even thought the elaborate ruse was funny, but a few turned hostile when the reveal was made. [Rolling Stone]
I wonder if Ozzy and Rob knew it was going to happen, becaue that move was SO not rock n roll. Tour dates, here.

wonder who's gonna get slapped with a lawsuit first...as this falls into name defamation/impersonation category.

They should have arrested Ozzy and Sharon while they were at it for crimes against good taste.

how is this legal?
so does that mean, most
ozzy fans have outstanding warrants?

Private pre-party for the Hannah Montana concert at my apt! NYC girls attending the show ages 18 to 18 invited, sponsored by BONE productions!

^YES

If they would have picked a hip-hop artist, they would have been labeled as racists.

Posted by Anonymous | October 31, 2007 3:14 PM

Are they allowed to misrepresent something like that? That seems like a legally gray area..

Posted by Lars | October 31, 2007 3:21 PM

Yes, its called a "ruse", and its perfectly legal, and pretty common. The standard scenario is law enforcement mailing a "collect your prize" type announcement to all the people on the warrant list, and a few hundred show up to be arrested.

Its actually even legal in the State of NY (can't speak of elsewhere) for the police to trick someone into leaving their home so that they can arrest them without the need for a warrant to enter the home.

This would not work on Daft Punk fans.

Posted by Anonymous | October 31, 2007 3:55 PM

Isn't it punishment enough just to attend an Ozzy concert?

Posted by drewo | October 31, 2007 4:06 PM

"How did they know these people were attending the Ozzy/Rob Zombie concert?"

I'm guessing they didn't know, that they just conducted a targeted direct mail campaign and sent junk mail to the 40 or so who showed up and a number who didn't.

cable companies used to do that during pay per view events. the hot boxes would descramble a message like call in for your free wrestlemania t shirt and you would get a fine and court summons for stealing cable.

Word! That's awesome that the cops did that!!

hey did you guys see the people getting arrested for going through the emergency exit doors at 175th Street subway station yesterday. Undercover cops posing as "people hanging out" swooped down and busted people. This was after the Black Crowes concert. The entrance on 175th Street side of the station, where theres always about 500 people trying to get through 2 door.

So instead of having maybe one cop as a deterrant, they had about 4 undercover cops there so they could bust people and "teach a lesson". Meanwhile, 4 people got shot at Union Square and not a cop in sight. Bravo, NYPD.

Posted by Anonymous | November 1, 2007 9:42 AM

175th St? They go up that far?

Posted by Anonymous | November 1, 2007 9:47 AM

you guys word to the wise- be careful there from now on these fuckers I guess got wise after the spring concerts there (United Palace). The line into the station got ridiculous when I was there for Bjork and Modest Mouse, and at some point people just used the emergency exit. So now they busted people, EVEN IF YOU HAVE UNLIMITED METRO CARD! One guy was getting his arm twisted and he looked like he was about to cry saying he was sorry to the cop. These cops were real fucking tough, they werent hearing any excuses.

"Meanwhile, 4 people got shot at Union Square and not a cop in sight. Bravo, NYPD."

Hello! Who the fuck would have expected a shooting in Union Square?! If the NYPD had had a sizable presence there, there would have been complaints that they put officers in safe (read: white) areas at the expense of areas that really need police protection.

^There's a police precinct in Union Square, dude. Get a grip.

That Ozzy story = ha ha! Reminds me of this song:
