R Bar
As previously announced, the free BrooklynVegan party this Friday (Oct 19) is at R Bar - a swanky new (sort of) bar/venue on the Lower East Side - right on Bowery between Prince and Spring - a short walk from...pretty much anywhere else on the Lower East Side. The show is 18+ to get in, will have an open Svedka/Red Bull/Bloody Mary bar (while supplies last) for those over 21, and features ten bands - including Black Kids.
Tonight's (Oct 18) show at R Bar looks good too. First of all, it's hosted by MATT PINFIELD. Also, you've got Little Birdy, The Forms, Born in the Flood, Benzos, Takka Takka, and The Epochs - a band, who despite the confusion of one commenter, are playing there tonight (not tomorrow). They're also a band who are playing/played six shows during CMJ.

Any comments on the Black Kids last night? Was it just me, or was it incredibly bad? His voice was so off tune.

black kids weren't that great at The Annex, but their R Bar show kicked ass.

the black kids sounded like the winner of this year's most overhyped band. this year is so sad.

I was a bit disappointed in the Black Kids performance. I really like the songs I've heard but something was lacking in the performance. Maybe my expectations were too high from just hearing four songs. They opened with "I'm Not Gonna Teach Him How to Dance With You" which is probably my favorite track of theirs and it didn't hit me like I expected. I was bummed they didn't play "Hit the Heartbreaks". I do think the songs not on their Myspace actually were the highlights of the show. Maybe it was because it was material I had no expectation for but it came across a lot better then some of the other tracks.
All in all I was hoping for more. It certainly wasn't bad by any means but didn't blow me away by any means. I'd definitely check them out again as I can see them getting better.
