Radiohead

Beastie Boys, Madonna, Leonard Cohen, The Dave Clark Five, John Mellencamp, Donna Summer, Afrika Bambaataa, The Ventures and Chic are the 2008 Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame nominees. It seems hip hop is well represented, but there's no Radiohead, and there's no metal.

Radiohead has a song in Tom Cruise's 2001 movie Vanilla Sky and now the guy trying to extort money from Tom Cruise has been found dead. Supposedly from suicide.

Perhaps Jenna Bush's new book Ana's Story will reveal if it was her or her sister that was at that Radiohead show last year. People are wondering.

Mark Ronson's new album Version contains a Radiohead cover, and one of Britney Spears who luckily lost custody of her children, except maybe it isn't lucky because she lost that custody to Kevin Federline.

According to Wikipedia, Kid A's "production style" is "similar to Phil Spector's wall of sound technique", and now Phil Spector is free on murder charges due to a mistrial.

Radiohead & The Pipettes are both from the UK, and are both loved by Pitchfork. Thom Yorke scored a stunning victory against The Pipettes in 2006 when he walked away with the prize for "best vinyl artwork". To make matters worse, now the Pipettes have had to postpone their tour.

Speaking of female artists from the UK, Radiohead coverer KT Tunstall doesn't think Thom Yorke should abandon his career or shut up, but Noel Gallagher of Oasis thinks he should. Oasis has been posting new videos on YouTube to promote their new DVD called "Lord Don't Slow Me Down" - out November 6th on Universal. KT Tunstall's new album Drastic Fantastic is out now on Virgin - some people like it, and some people don't, but it is a known fact that almost everyone likes Radiohead.

Radiohead's new album In Rainbows will be released in just nine days. How much did you pay for your copy?

Wow BV, those were some connections. You really are getting back on a role here
Just to add, it was JENNA bush at the radiohead show at the theater last year. I know for a fact cause i was 2 rows directly behind her. She has blond har while her sister has dark hair so its not hard to tell.

Jenna Bush attended a Radiohead concert? Did she not know what the title of "Hail to the Thief" referred to?

By the way, BV, it's now October 2 all across the contiguous U.S. (never mind the UK), so the release date is only eight days away. Unless Radiohead are going to make everyone wait until it's 12:01 AM Oct. 10 in the time zone just east of the international date line.

I am also connected to Radiohead: I like them.

The fact that no metal bands are up for election in the R&R Hall of Fame is absolutely ridiculous. Bands like KISS, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and prog bands like Rush had a HUGE impact on modern rock and roll and deserve to be in there more than many of the acts already there. Heck, even Anthrax should get consideration because they were really the first band to do the rap-metal thing full time (not a one-off song).

Besides the influence, the musicianship these bands demonstrate is far better than any punk band already in there.

I paid $0, but I do plan to buy the disc box. I don't feel bad because I've seen them live 4 times and bought all of their other albums.

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2007 9:01 AM

5 quid. Seems fair.

It's impossible to pay zero. You had to have paid at least 45 pents. I paid one pound along with the 45 pent surcharge. Probably about 2.50 American. Not bad...

Believe me, not everyone likes Radiohead

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2007 9:42 AM

actually it is(or at least was) possible to pay 0. i did it.

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2007 10:06 AM

I paid nothing.

Radiohead played nearly half the new songs last year at Bonaroo. 15 Step and Bodysnatchers were my favorite. I'm sure they've changed since then, but if you wanna hear, just search out some bonaroo 06 live recordings.

Wow, Noel Gallagher. Remember him?

"prog bands like Rush had a HUGE impact on modern rock and roll"

I just don't know what to say....

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2007 10:50 AM

psssh, you all tom cruise killed that man with his bare hands...

Posted by mat | October 2, 2007 10:53 AM

I also paid 5 quid plus a fee - $11 for the download seems very fair to me - basically iTunes prices.

Posted by Robert | October 2, 2007 10:54 AM

Anon 12:50pm. Maybe you should pay more attention to music other than indie. There is a whole group of bands that have been influenced by RUSH and other prog bands. Look at bands like Dream Theater (who have been hugely infleuntial as well as they are the most talented band in the world).

Just because they are metal or prog and not indie and sell more than 2 albums doesnt mean they have not had an impact.

Plus, if crap like the Sex Pistols can get in, then really good bands who know how to play should be there also.

don't forget the Jonny Greenwood shows here in new york in january as well! can't wait for those.

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2007 11:19 AM

i paid nothing but i will undoubtedly pay for the cd when it comes out on hard copy or maybe even the discbox if that comes to stores or becomes slightly cheaper than $81

"Jenna Bush attended a Radiohead concert? Did she not know what the title of "Hail to the Thief" referred to?"

Yes... she should never be allowed to see "your band."

dolt.

I'm a huge Radiohead fan but I was a bit turned off by Yorke's blatant politics with the Thief title, it doesn't suit the theme of the songs on teh record. I think artists and musicians should be apolitical and let their music do the talking. However, I think Jenna Bush is a complete moron. She must have forced her SS guards to beat someone for them. She just has that dumb southern girl look on her face, like her dad.

Why are the Pipettes covered by all of the indie blogs? If you cover them, you may as well cover the spice girls.

could be a dumb question, so excuse the ignorance - but is jonny actually playing @ wordless, or is it just his composition / arrangment of Popcorn Superhet Receiver? Im assuming the latter - any thoughts?

Posted by vinz | October 2, 2007 12:53 PM

i payed 82 for the discbox. going to be so worth it.

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2007 1:19 PM

You can pay $0. The processing fee is no doubt to cover their credit card costs...so if you offer them 0, there're no charges incurred, and thus, no processing fee. Thanks, Radiohead. Love you.

I paid 50 pounds, because I love the band, and I strongly want to encourage this new pricing idea.

Shame on all of you who just paid 0. The whole point of this experiment was to see if you could be persuaded not to steal the music from a P2P, and instead pay what you think it is worth. If you think it is worth nothing, then why bother downloading it?

Certainly few others are going to feel a similar level of benevolence toward the band, but at least pony up a fair price if you are into their music. Of all the expensive and useless things we have to consume in our daily lives, isn't a great album at least worth what you'd pay for a night out in New York?

Posted by James | October 2, 2007 2:28 PM

hmmm, you bring up an interesting question: if you think it is worth nothing, then why bother downloading it?

interesting because...there's no way for me to know if it's worth paying for until I download it! of course this is a special case here: radiohead don't release new albums every year.

but in general, for this type of model to work for other artists, they have to be willing to allow free downloads for people who haven't heard them before.

Posted by re: james | October 2, 2007 4:07 PM

The point wasn't to see if people would download it from a p2p or not. It's a great experiment to see how they can stick it to the record companies. The band is not looking to make a large profit from the record, as record sales have dropped significantly in the past few years, they are looking to get their music out there for more listeners and more people to come to the tour, which is the real money maker for any artist. Price was giving away his recent cd to anyone who attended the tour.
I do think if you really like them you'll want them to get a profit from their music, but honestly, they have enough. If they didn't it wouldn't be a pay as much as you want situation.

Jenna Bush attended a concert by a band whose then-latest album had a title that's an attack on her father, and *I'm* the dolt?

And as for your swipe at Radiohead being "[my] band," I'm not even a Radiohead fan. Just someone who has a brain and uses it when listening to music.

i posted this on the big-ass radiohead thread from earlier, but check it:

Radiohead Spokesperson: Fans Paying Close to Retail for Pricing-Optional Album

http://blog.wired.com/music/2007/10/radiohead-spoke.html

"Radiohead took a huge risk in releasing their album this way, but judging from this early indication (which, granted, comes from their publicist), the risk seems to be paying off, not only in terms of press coverage, but also by generating advance sales -- of a high-priced album package, no less. Surely, there's a lesson to other bands and labels floating around here somewhere: increase anticipation for your album, treat fans with respect, give them options and offer something truly attractive to the hardcore following, and the world will beat a path to your server -- which will then require an upgrade, as the operators of Radiohead.com found out yesterday."
