You insentive bastard. Dean was a caring fellow, an innovator, and a fixture on the downtown scene willing to welcome anyone with open arms. His music and flair changed me forever.

OK. I'm kidding. I have no idea who this doosh is, but I'm sure someone will post something similar even though they never met the guy, and if they did, he'd probably give a fuck less.

This planet DOES suck!

"people who are not like you care. hard to believe they exist, isn't it?"

I deleted the insensitive first comment.

Thanks BV. I didn't know this guy or his scene but to those of you who feel it necessary to call him a doosh and give those a hard time who care well guess what...F&ck You, You sorry excuses. No humanity at all.

Enjoy your rotten day and life sitting there scowling and waiting for someone else to crap on b/c ur life is so sad.

i keep watching Fuck You, which is pretty incredible. i hadn't heard about Dean Johnson before last week either, but it's sad to see NYC lose transgressives like him, especially when they're replaced by sniping herd-mentality fucking losers like the commenters above.

I couldn't agree with you more Dola!

if you don't get it, you never will. dean was fabulous. dean was tawdry. the world is a much more boring place without him. he rocked the world of those that mattered.
look to your heroes, paris hilton, lindsay lohan and the like for inspiration for your homogenized, banal & ultimately inconsequential lives.

What dola said, x 1000. "sniping herd-mentality fucking losers like the commenters above" indeed. He's dead, BV posted a nice little tribute. If you're going to bitch about the newsworthiness of BV's posts, why not show some class and not do it in the comments to an obituary?

And what does Bowie have to do with it? Did he die too?

P.S. It's "douche".

Why do people who are actually on the internet still want to be fed things like resumes and definitions, and are even snarky about it to boot? 'What did he do?' 'What does this word mean?' 'Why do I cry everytime a book opens?' "Figure" "it" "out" "yourself" "jackass."

hey dola, your are a douchebag(n):

from NY Daily News:

Gay club king not first to die in pal's D.C. flat
-------------------------------------------------
(Wednesday, Oct 3) A second man died a week earlier in the same D.C. apartment where cops found the body of gay nightlife impresario Dean Johnson, the Daily News has learned.

Violent crime detectives are investigating both deaths, which cops believe were likely drug overdoses. The apartment belongs to 47-year-old Steven Saleh, an out-of-work former Commerce Department employee who sent Johnson a train ticket to come visit.

The invite came just days after the two exchanged e-mails in which Saleh lamented that a friend had just overdosed before his eyes.

"It was his choices that led to his demise," Johnson replied the following day, trying to console Saleh.

The flamboyant punk rocker traveled to D.C. two days later, said Johnson's friend, Dale Corvino, 43. Johnson, 45, apparently died soon after, sources said.

"He's still in shock," said Craig Kraft, a pal of Saleh's. "He's a little freaked out."

Friends told The News Johnson had been taking anti-depressants and sleeping pills and was battling a drug problem for years.

You're just mad cuz Dola has your number. This blog is full of bores congratulating themselves on their "good" taste and demeaning anything that doesn't appeal to them. Not even the dead are spared their uninformed criticism.

R.I.P. Dean Johnson

The only thing that could move the commenter at 4:45 to outrage would be if Chipotle moved out of NYC.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2007 5:10 PM

Will all of you please move back to Omaha with your Arcade Fire records? You ruined this great city.

Amen to that 5:17

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2007 7:11 PM

oh please people with your big city snobbery. most of you probably weren't born and raised in NY. as far as I'm concerned you're all a bunch of squatters. This city is big enough for Chipotle, "Queer" Dean (RIP) and all your hipster haircuts.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2007 7:32 PM

i used to bartend in the l.e.s., before it became what it is now, and dean would come in for happy hour and just be a sweet guy with great stories. i'm sorry i never saw him perform. r.i.p.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2007 8:58 PM

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against this guy. After watching the 6 videos, I do thing that his music sucks... It could have been different if I was drunk or else, but I'm not...

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2007 7:07 AM

I'm a "sweet guy" with "good stories"... wonder if someday this blog will post a tribute to me.

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2007 7:36 AM

what a bunch of needy motherfuckers!

Anon 7:36-

Maybe if you start acting sweet and sharing good stories. Right now you just seem like a boring asshole.

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2007 11:49 AM

Dean did more in the last 25 years for NYCs nightlife than most people here will ever realize.

It's sad that so many people just don't get it.

For those that don't think like his music based on the videos above...try listing to The Velvet Mafia's "We Know Where You Live" ... it's amazing. Watching Dean live was mesmerizing, you just had to be there to understand.

You will be missed and remebered fondly. Rest in Peace, Dean.

rock fags rule.

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2007 5:55 PM

Ok why make an argument about 'the music sucks' or 'who cares about downtown fixtures'? Dean is dead and that is a shame. Yeah everyone's entitled to their opinion but there are too many people on the net with nothing better to do but yak about stuff they dont know much about. The Facts: Dean Johnson died. (Too young!!!) His is friends and family are wrecked about the news, so lets be a little respectful here. I didnt know anything about the NY scene but when I saw Dean + the Weenies performing "Fuck You" on Mondo New York when I was 22 made me laugh. I used to play that clip just to cheer me up. (That clip and Joey glorious Arias I must add..) It was a riot! I even sought out the Mondo NY vinyl to annoy my friends with this defiant anthem. Come on, its hilarious and wonderful! And as a young person, I loved Dean's attitude in the clip. This was a man who clearly didn't give a fuck, and it was sensational and inspiring. He wasn't trying to be perfect, he was being an individual. Fuck all this "the music is horrible" crap and look deeper- this guy probably had more attitude and way more fun than 100 people put together, so I say Respect, and rest in peace Mr. Dean.

Posted by strange stain | October 4, 2007 8:33 PM

Why is it that no one really cares "why" Dean died? Could it be that his "don't give a f$%k", "sensational", "inspiring", uninhibited lifestyle betrayed him in the end? No one seems to care about the root causes of his untimely death. Everyone just wants to focus on his crappy music and party antics. In my experience, the folks that were the most uninhibited and sensational in their public persona had personal lives that were a complete wreck. So who cares if he had more fun than 100 people put together. Those 100 people are still alive today and his music was really bad. There's an avant-garde bs glamour scene belief that "attitude is everything". It's not, his music was crap and he died from an unhealthy lifestyle. End of story.

Posted by Anonymous | October 5, 2007 7:26 AM

7:26's "he died from an unhealthy lifestyle" comment reads like it's lifted directly out of the evangelical radical right's talking points memo of the day.

Posted by Anonymous | October 5, 2007 9:43 AM

Dean was a BIG believer in fearless self-expression, but that does NOT extend to anonymous posters. Anonymous blog-posting courage is LAME. Dean had true punk courage on all fronts.

A little background on the Weenie's underground hit. Dean was at Area one night in '85 and this bore wouldn't stop yammering. Dean went home, flipped on the TV to the Mary Tyler Moore reruns, and wrote:

Why are you talking to me?
Please leave immediately
Where is your dignity? Please get away from me
Why don't you choke on a fashion accessory?

I cannot remember your name and I couldn't care less
I could have more fun talking to the IRS
Why don't you take you take you problems to analysis?
Get your foot out of your mouth and suck on this-

You know the rest.

Posted by dc10001 | October 5, 2007 3:43 PM

i would call this anonymous dude a pussy douche bag, if only it didn't degrade pussies , and douche bags. what i mean is that it must be nice to finally feel empowered in the world by getting to insult a dead man , over and over again, anonymously, on his tribute page. dean was a real man and very willing to own every action he took, regardless of its moral standing. Grow some fucking balls and put a name to yr rants asshole, you know his fucking friends (including me) are searching the web for everything we can find on dean cuz we miss him. i do think dean would laugh at you but i would like to punch you. will you please give me that opportunity? maybe i should take this to my unabomber hacker pals and find you. anyway, thats just this moment, im sure this feeling will go away as soon as i close this window. just wanted to share that, grief sure is a bitch.

re: vr1313 3:56 AM... which friend of Dean are you pictured above?... the one in the nun costume or wearing the mickey mouse ears?

Posted by Friend of Dean | October 6, 2007 12:18 PM

i'm so apalled by these juvenile comments by the annonymous asshole who claims to have taste in music just b/c he listens to bowie. dean was and still is one of the most talented, intelligent, witty, and caring person i've known. i'm just sorry that he's not around to put you in your place because knowing him, he would waste his time replying to your narrow minded nonsense because he is that open minded and non-judgemental and he probably would have wasted another moment to your sorry ass to pity you for not being loved as a child and having such issues stemming from such a sad, sad childhood. that's dean. and that's probably why he died the way he did, and that's why he is loved and remembered the way he is. rip dean. i love you and i miss you.

one idiot was making most of the stupid comments in this post, and I deleted them all. sorry.

On what would have been Dean Johnson's 47th birthday, his many friends, cohorts and fellow musicians join for an epic celebration of New York City's recently lost Star. The towering Johnson was a pioneer in many ways, helping to shape the NYC gay and transgendered nightscape with his parties ROCK 'N ROLL FAG BAR and HOMOCORPS. Best known as songwriter and lead singer for two influential NYC bands, DEAN AND THE WEENIES and THE VELVET MAFIA, he will be remembered that way tonight.

Both bands will take the stage for extended sets with guest artists from Dean's many nocturnal circles performing his most classic songs. They include AMANDA POLLOCK, BEBE BUELL, BONNIE BOWERS, COREY TUT, THE DAZZLE DANCERS, DUELLING BANKHEADS, EUNICE HOLLAND, JENNY MAUL, JOEY ARIAS, JUSTIN BOND, KEVIN AVIANCE, MELISSA TIERS, MICHAEL "FORMIKA" JONES, MISS MANDY LEMONS, NURSE WANDA (JEAN WALSH), PERRI MASCO, PHOEBE LEGERE, THE GIRLS FROM PLANET MUFF, WORLD FAMOUS *BOB* and XAVIER. Besides celebrating Johnson's cultural legacy in video and song, the evening also nods to his big heart - 100% of proceeds after show expenses will benefit SYLVIA'S PLACE, providing shelter for homeless GLBT youth in NYC. The night is being produced by Dean's sister BETH JOHNSON with three of his longtime co-producers - CHI CHI VALENTI (THE JACKIE FACTORY) and JOE BIRDSONG and HATTIE HATHAWAY of RAPTURE EVENTS. ROCK N ROLL FAG BAR 2008 is also being planned with the help of visual and musical curators ALICE O'MALLEY, LESLIE STERNBERGH and ADAM ALEXANDER, STUART KLINGER (THE WEENIES) and SUSANNE HASSENSTEIN (THE VELVET MAFIA).
