Ghostland Observatory @ ACL, 2007 (CRED)
Ghostland Observatory

I couldn't believe it when Ghostland Observatory was headlining (and sold out) Bowery Ballroom, and I couldn't believe it even more when they were the biggest thing ever in the world at Austin City Limits this year - they headlined one of the stages (right before Bob Dylan played on another stage) on the last night of the festival, and you couldn't get within a mile of them - they are HUGE (in their hometown of Austin at least).

I sort of got into them for the first time there too - even though I was tired, couldn't get anywhere near them, etc - I felt like under the right circumstances - it could work out between us....He can sing, and it's definitely danceable. (ok, I like them, I'll say it)

Tickets are on sale for an October 19th CMJ Ghostland Observatory show at Webster Hall.

Over the summer, Spank Rock and Ghostland played the same party at McCarren Pool. Spank Rock likes to dance on top of computers. Spank Rock is also playing CMJ. October 19th @ Irving Plaza:

* Spank Rock
* Noisettes
* Yo Majesty
* Earl Greyhound
* Santogold
* The Apes
Is it safe to assume that the theme of this CMJ showcase is related to the fact that all the groups have at least one African American musician in them? Whatever it is, it's hot. No tix yet.

Yo Majesty are also playing Highline Ballroom with Islands and Trail of Dead. Yo Majesty are also playing an unannounced BrooklynVegan party.

the Earl Greyhound site says they're playing Syracuse that day, and the Irving site doesn't have a show listed. Where did you get that info from?

They were HUGE at Sasquatch this past year also.

they are good but looked out of place when they "headlined" at mccarren pool last month. don't blame it on the rain.

I saw them at McCarren Park too. Granted, this was the first time I've seen or heard them, but I gotta be honest, I don't get it.

Yeah and MIA is playing that Friday too.

It should be noted that they played a sold out stubbs (which they sold about 1,500 tickets in about 3 days) 45 minutes after their ACL performace. The show at Stubb's was one of my highlights of ACL. If your not afraid to dance, these guys are the ones to see....as they say, "move with your lover!"

it should also be noted that they are from texas, hence the large crowd. it should also be noted there were very few people at the show at McCarren Park Pool and those who were there weren't into it. just sayin.

Saw Ghostland at last year's ACL. It was laughably bad. A male singer who looks remarkably like a woman in too-tight clothing, backed by a guy in a blue dracula cape. Maybe I need to just hear them on CD without the visuals, b/c they were one of the poorest, most annoying and funny (in a bad way) bands I've ever seen. I cannot believe how huge they've become. It truly baffles me.

GHOSTLAND BROKE BECAUSE OF KEXP SEATTLE'S JOHN IN THE MORNING. SIMPLE FACT, AND I'M NOT A BIG FAN OF THE GUY TO BEGIN WITH.

nice headband dude

I think the Gothamist guys deserve some credit for breaking GLO, in New York at least. They booked them for a Knitting Factory show a while back and they blew CYHSY off the stage. They've been on the up and up since then.

Also - they rule all.

Posted by Chris | October 5, 2007 1:36 PM

i fucking hate GLO, I think it's gotta be some of the cheesiest, dumbest shit I've heard/seen in ages.

NO NO NO AND MORE NO

NOOOOOOOOOOO

Posted by Anonymous | October 5, 2007 2:12 PM

there's no way that ghostland outplayed CYHSY at that Knitting Factory show.

they're a fucking joke of a band. it's bad enough to use all the backing tracks they do - but to suck so much is just an insult to any music fan.

i'd rather see Gil Manteras Party Dream

The hipsters can't come around to a performance act unless it's perpetuated by a social retard playing 8-bit music.

Aaron is a classically trained dancer that can actually sing while he gets his groove on and Thomas is a production wizard. That's cool if you don't dig their music but these guys are completely legit and most impressively - totally grounded.

Just because the kids at McCarren weren't down doesn't mean the rest of the country won't be.

word

I don't get it. Bad songs, bad musicianship, bad bad bad! They have to dance around a wear capes to hide the fact that they suck. This guy can't even sing in tune to save his life. Not to mention the program beats that are stock yamaha motif samples (where's the originality guys??)HYPE HYPE HYPE. Everyone talks about the show, no one says anything positive about the music. Isn't that the point. Same drum beat over and over and over and over and over. Come on. "they sound like Daft punk" Who, daft who? I didn't know who daft punk was when they were big, and still do not care. The cattle that make up the fans of the austin music scene are driven in the direction the local rags and radio stear them in. That's why spoon is so popular and old. The GLO cd they are still pushing is about 2 years old and the other one is way less than par too. I'll leave you with this story, my good friend who is also a musician borrowed the latest GLO cd and put it in his car stereo. The cd player instantly broke and just now after a year, he was able to get it out. Some things have better taste than we think....
