The Hook, RIP

(photo via)
Red Hook

Not many people realized the The Hook even existed, and not many people even realize that out-of-the-way Red Hook music venue went out of business earlier this month. The Hook was home to Clevelend Fest, No Fun Fest, a Moldy Peaches reunion, and even the occasional indie show. It was just too hard to get to - in a section of Brooklyn with a bad reputation, and without a subway. At least they tried. RIP.

Tag Teams 10th anniversary party with Broken Social Scene last year was an amazing Hook show! The hook will be missed.

no shit. i only went once...saw the riverboat gamblers there a few years back. in any other area it may have worked but not there.

I lived 2 blocks from this place and all I have to say is good riddance. I went once to check it out and would never go back.

played there 3 times...great club, really shitty location. The manager...Jeff, totally cool dude.

i went there once, to see ted leo. it was a great show! i liked the venue. red hook is challenging, though.

loved that place.

My little brother played a show there once, and I had no way of getting to the venue from the subway. The owner/manager of the place overheard the situation and picked me up at the nearest train station. It was really nice of him. I wish him and the people who work there the best of luck.

its not a bad area actually.

A shame ... I live quite close and could walk there. I wouldn't have a clue how to get a car there! But I didn't go much, so I am probably part of the problem. The bartender I met their once was nice, lots of tattoos, she was pretty cool.

that was one of the best venues in NYC...sadly, i only went there once. pain in the arse to get to.

Been to a couple of shows there, they were always awesome. Plus they had the grill out in the back during the summer! Definitely going to miss it.

I live near there and went alot when it first opened. Saw the RZA there, Thurston Moore, Mini Kiss. I've completely forgotten about it recently. It's too bad, it's a much cooler place than williamsburg to see a show. less hipsters and more cool, working-class bar-hoppers.

I saw Animal Collective and Black Dice in 01. This was still back when people were hyping Red Hook as the "next great Brooklyn neighborhood" to blow up. It was a great show, but no matter how much people in then neighborhood tried to argue otherwise, it was clear that Red Hook was just not convenient to get to.

ESG's set there last year was one of the best nights i've had in recent years.

regretting passing on the lucero show their last summer. must have been one of the last.

missing pioneer bar too.

Mini Kiss!!! Man I would have loved to have seen that!

waaaah.... I have to learn the bus schedule... waaah

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2007 8:24 AM

wow. that's too bad. i'd been there a few times, primarily for metal shows, and always had a good time.

I was only there once, for a Siren after party with Ambulance LTD. and a few other bands. Cool place. Sucks when a good place closes.

10 minute walk from Carroll Street station? I went there for No Fun Fest. How does this place close, and Death By Audio stays open?

good point 9:21! i guess it's cuz the kind of crowd that trudges out to the far reaches of the city for things like ToddP's shows are not the same target audience for the Hook (except for like when Lightning Bolt played there). it's really not a bad walk if you take the pedestrian overpass.

they gave it a good shot though, with that shuttle bus service and whatnot. maybe somebody else could do something with the space? seems like a big waste.

I think they needed a better more consistant booker. If people will haul ass out to Maxwell's from Brooklyn, they'll take a bus to Red Hook if it's worth it. And they did have the shuttle for the bigger profile shows.

GZA there was real sick. Gotta give it up for a bar that books the members of the Clan and sells 40s of Old E. I'll pour some out tonight in memory.

"they gave it a good shot though, with that shuttle bus service"

They never ran the shuttle service. I tried to go twice, and both times they said they didn't have it running that one night. I don't not like being lied to, so I didn't go.

Face it, NYC runs on subways. They would have never made it.

I saw Mini Kiss there -it was AWESOME!
Also saw Nashville Pussy and a few other cool shows.

There's a BUS that stops 2 blocks away from the Hook that you can pick up at Jay St. So, it's not really that hard to get to. New Yorkers who think they're too cool to take a bus are a joke.

"There's a BUS that stops 2 blocks away from the Hook that you can pick up at Jay St. So, it's not really that hard to get to."

But you assume Jay St is easy to get to. What if you lived in the UES or off the J train (two random examples). Just getting to Jay St is a chunk of time, and you then want to add buses in the mix?

"Face it, NYC runs on subways."

I beg to differ, NYC runs on Motion Lotion... with out it everything would just be a pain in the ass...

You're partly right. The Hook is closing down. However, it is not dead yet. It will be home to The Greatest Halloween Party Ever this Saturday, October 27th, 2007. Fittingly, the theme is "The Death of Coney Island" -a laying rest of the Coney Island we all once knew...

Ours will be the last party there, so come on down and help us tear down the place!

Happy Halloween.

Halloween is always on October 31st. Only amateurs go out to Halloween parties the weekend before.

Poor baby, you can't sleep 3 hours for one night and then go to work.

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2007 3:45 PM

Wow, I've never seen somebody who is so angry about Halloween. I'll say I agree, the real party happens on Oct 31st, but I spend so much time on my costume every year, it's nice to go out more than once.

@j: What the hell? What happened to Pioneer Bar? Best BBQ in the city!

Posted by cortez | October 24, 2007 5:56 PM

there's nothing cool about living on the upper east side,it takes time to get anywhere from there
