great show. completely the opposite atmosphere from the previous night at webster hall (animal collective show).
i'm a huge fan of the bowerbirds album and i was extremely delighted to find out that they sound even better live than they do on their album (unlike a certain show the previous night).
mountain goats also put on a great show. they have such good chemistry and stage presence despite just being two guys who are barely plugged in. stage banter was great and the crowd was really into it.
overall, i was extremely pleased with the show. as much as i like a loud show with lots of lights and glitz, it was a welcome change of pace from most of the shows i have seen lately around the city.
now time to gear up for randalls island. . .

I think it was the first time I got to see them play "Best Ever Death Metal Band..."
And definitely the first time I've seen them wearing suits!
Setlist was a few new ones, "Going to Queens", title tracks from Coroner's Gamit and Nine Black Poppies. A few off Sunset Tree, a few off Tallahassee. Some more.

the mountain goats were utterly fantastic last night. and looked super-dashing in their suits as well.

anyone know what the set times are tonight in brooklyn?

Both bands were great. It was a pleasure to see the Bowerbirds live and am hoping we'll see them in NY again soon! Was stoked when I yelled out for them to play Olive Hearts and they actually did.
The Mountain Goats were amazing. The banter was awesome. They were clearly having a great time with the show and it was a nice tight, fun set list and a crowd that was really into it.

Mountain Goats are set to go on tonight around 10.

anyone got anything more specific about the set times for both bands tonight?
Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2007 3:38 PM
You mean more specific than giving you the time? You want to know what door they'll be entering from?
Bowerbirds around 9pm. Mountain Goats around 10pm. As accurate as any concert set time prediction can be.

"Best Ever Death Metal Band..." wow. (I do remember "Source Decay" at Northsix a few years ago.) anybody got a set list?

They played a rockin version of "Pure Milk"; unbelievable. There's prolly a set list at the forum on mountain-goats.com .

1st time seeing them...pretty good set, I found his banter fairly entertaining,I didn't laugh like others who thought he was Mitch hedberg. 9poppies/death metal/no children ..good stuff, but didn't blow me away

came for bowerbirds, but enjoyed the whole show. It's great seeing bands like this young in their careers because you essentially get their first (full) album as the set list. I have to say however that while Phil's voice sounded even better live than on the album (which really gives an indication of what a great voice he has), the harmonies Beth provided sometimes seemed slightly off. Perhaps it was because her vocals were a bit loud, but I felt like some of Phil's voice was lost in this "harmonic" attempt, especially the end of "Slow Down" which to me lost some of its power as I missed alot of the inflections in his voice as they were covered up by the harmonies. A lot of the meaning that comes from Phil's words are wrapped up in how well the actual melodies, notes, rhythms and words come together and I feel like some of these things, which make the album spectacular, were lost at the show purely because of some of the harmonies. But that's live music. Still a fantastic show, a fantastic band and hopefully we get some more of these folksy, jammy, bluegrass gospel type bands coming through the circuit.
