The Warlocks (CMJ spotlight) - 2007 Tour Dates

I'm always surprised by which bands are able to make a name for themselves and which others toil away under the shadows. A lot of it, of course, is due to the political machinations of the music industry, but even in the ultra-hyper blog celebrity (of which I am contributing to this very moment), some bands still fail to get their due notice. I believe The Warlocks are one of those bands.
They came out of the late 90s neo-psychedelic scene, along with awesome bands Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Brian Jonestown Massacre, and the sometimes good (but not lately) Dandy Warhols. Each of their albums are different in sound and approach (due to their lineup, which fluctuates from as few as four to as many as ten), while at the same time maintaining a singular sound that is uniquely their own. Their new album Heavy Deavy Skull Lover is practically an instrumental album, with long, repetitive drones, swirling guitar symphonies, and the slow, steady release of a morphine drip. It's possibly their best album, though Phoenix definitely has its moments.
They'll be playing three shows in NYC this week - including the Tee Pee records showcase at Luna Lounge. All tour dates, and some videos, below....

don't they know that there was already a band called the Warlocks back in the 60s?

...and that the other Warlocks became the Grateful Dead, man? This is gonna BLOW Bob Weir's MIND!

Here's more info on that Thursday Warlocks show at Glasslands: http://diwmagazine.wordpress.com/2007/10/03/cm-what-cm-who/. They should be on around 11:45 with the Religious Knives beforehand and Holy Fuck soon after.

It's funny, even a band with a terrible name like the Grateful Dead thought that the name The Warlocks was even worse!

I kinda thought "grateful dead" was pure genius.

I always assumed the Warlocks were metal.

You know what's even funnier, 3:43, is how stupid your crack is given that the Dead abandoned the Warlocks moniker because another band was already recording under it.

An early incarnation of the Velvet Underground was also called the Warlocks!

Both the Velvet Underground and the Grateful Dead were named the Warlocks at one point

The "sometimes good but not lately" Warhols? Give your head a shake. The Dandys are a step up on all the other bands you mentioned.

Good to see a post on these guys. Phoenix album has to be one of my favorite albums still. I actually had it in the car on the way to work this morning. Its amazing how under the radar these guys have remained, you can even tell from these comments, no indie blogs post about them so none of these people commenting have any idea who they are. The band comes from the same location that the original 60s Warlocks group did which may have something to so with the name, anyway its an awesome name. I fear they will always remain under the radar because the majority of their catalog is music you need to pay attention to and listen to a few times before you start hearing the greatness. These days its all 30 second clips and no effort, everyone wants everything to be easy, including their music, stupid myspace generation.

is there really no other name they could come up with? did they even try?...a name that's already been used not once but TWICE before seems awfully unoriginal (not to mention both the dead and the velvet underground are way the fuck cooler than theses guys will ever be).

Who really cares if 2 other bands 30+ years had the name. I'm sorry pigpen but your name has been used by a founding member of the Dead and a Peanuts character, is there really no other name you could have come up with?

Enough about their name, guys, their music is AMAZING. Heavy Deavy is one of the best of '07, if you dig that type of guitar-effects music, which I do. And it pays to listen to it repeatedly; do NOT shake it off after one listen.
