Arcade Fire

The Arcade Fire - LCD Soundsystem - Les Savy Fav - Blonde Redhead - Wild Light show is happening this Saturday October 6th. Tickets are still on sale, and I've got two pairs to give away to two lucky people who email BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (subject: Arcade). Include your first and last name, and what the last show you saw was. Two winners will be picked at random and contacted.

Opener Wild Light are from Boston, have someone named Seth Pitman in their band which confused me at first, have four Arcade Fire-esque songs streaming on their MySpace, and have also recently opened for the Arcade Fire at some other big shows across the country.

Here's the easiest way to win those tickets: take mine.

I don't dislike any of the bands playing, but instinct overcame reason on this one, and I'm not all that pumped for a full Saturday Randall's Island show.

(Cue loser music from 'The Price is Right.')

Posted by StopCrying | October 1, 2007 10:01 AM

What? This show is not sold out yet??? No Way??? I just do not believe it. Maybe if the brain trust at Bowery adds like another 10 bands then maybe just maybe they will sell it out.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 10:04 AM

Tons of people are selling their tickets on Craigslist, but are finding no buyers! Why would anyone pay face value on Craigslist when tickets are available? Tickets will be free come Saturday.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 10:12 AM

I've heard alot of tickets have sold but it's such a huge place they can keep on selling...probably like 16,000 to 20,000

Posted by RT | October 1, 2007 10:14 AM

its pretty much impossible for this show to "sell out" randalls island is HUGE

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 10:14 AM

is that a butler family reunion without regine? That is one funny picture. or is it the polyphonic spree without their robes?

Posted by jen | October 1, 2007 10:40 AM

theres a number of factors coming into play here, 1 everyone has seen these bands already this year multiple times (I have at least) factor 2 is the weather, I know I wouldnt want to stand around all day in potential rain/cold weather. So people are waiting to see what the forecast calls for. 3. I think people saw pictures of that Rock the bells thing and are thinking do I want to be anywhere near a clusterfuck of people squeezed in like sardinse and most likely half mile from the stage. something to think about...\

that being said, id like those free tickets.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 10:49 AM

"its pretty much impossible for this show to "sell out" randalls island is HUGE"

Wrong on all counts. Randalls Island sell out number is far less than Giants Stadium and shows sell out there all the time or at least they claim to sell it out all the time.

can you still walk over the Triboro bridge from Astoria Queens to Randall's Island? I used to walk over the Triboro to Randall's island all the time, but don't know if you can do it anymore or not. I walked to 2 different lollapalloza's over there pre- 9/11. Anybody know? Getting there by bus will be easy, LEAVING by bus WILL SUCK, I much rather would walk to Astoria.

Posted by Astoria native | October 1, 2007 11:22 AM

seeing les savy fav at this huge venue is going to be very awkward.

Posted by michael | October 1, 2007 11:22 AM

Not as sad as Bloc Party not being able to sell out theatre at MSG yet.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 11:54 AM

"can you still walk over the Triboro bridge from Astoria Queens to Randall's Island? I used to walk over the Triboro to Randall's island all the time, but don't know if you can do it anymore or not."

Yes you can.

"I walked to 2 different lollapalloza's over there pre- 9/11."

So did I. With the old Downing Stadium, you could watch the concerts from the overpass. The stadium location has since changed.

"Anybody know? Getting there by bus will be easy, LEAVING by bus WILL SUCK, I much rather would walk to Astoria"

The bus from Woodside is TERRIBLE. I too rather just walk it. Actually, I will be driving this time. I don't have tickets, I will be outside looking for $10 tickets.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 11:56 AM

I've never seen any of these bands live, but I work for a union, have columbus day off and I want to go to Vermont for the weekend. Yeah, and if it rains and I'm not tripping? Yeah... Anyone want to buy my ticket? There's so much apathy for this show, I should have just sold my soul to go to the Church in Feb. Randall's island was a bad idea and I wasn't thinking when I sprang for this super pricey ticket.

My friend lives in Denver and saw the Red Rocks show, he said it was amazing, but they're so grateful for any noise from a musical instrument out there I'm sure the atmosphere was a lot better than what all of us doom and gloom spoiled rotten new yorkers will muster up.

Posted by grumpy | October 1, 2007 12:16 PM

Here's the weather forecast as of now

Sat
Oct 6 Mostly Sunny 77°/64° Precip: 10%

Obviously this could change

regarding the crowd, I think what the person should have said about Randall's Island not selling out is that it's less of a hard number rather than an inside venue with seats or a real contained stadium or something..more like an open festival field ..yes there will still be tickets available even on the day of show but there will also be alot of people there and I think they've reached their goal in terms of tickets sold

Posted by Guy Smiley | October 1, 2007 12:27 PM

i left by bus from lollapalooza and it wasnt bad at all. though i heard rock the bells this year sucked, people had to wait for 2 hours?

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 12:28 PM

Does anyone know the set times for the various bands?

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 12:31 PM

12:31 - good question, also anyone know how safe it is to go over that footbridge into manhattan? is that area rough?

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 1:01 PM

What time does Daft Punk go on?

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 1:06 PM

everything you will ever need to know about getting to randalls island...

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 1:13 PM

"i left by bus from lollapalooza and it wasnt bad at all."

Leaving is easy, getting there is not. Also remember, the special MTA event buses cost $4-5 and do not accept unlimited metrocards.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 1:15 PM

Well, I haven't been across the bridge since like 1996 or 97, but it is safe from the queens side at least, I mean it is Astoria, I am sure there will be other people walking as well, it was when I was going to lollapalooza those 2 years ago, safe that is. The walkway used to be on the left hand side if you were facing the bridge from the queens side.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 2:58 PM

@1:01, the footbridge area is not great but is safe, i live up there. the footbridge is closed (back to Manhattan at least) at night anyway so you'll be on a bus or what have you afterwards. the daytime is no problem.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 4:03 PM

"yes there will still be tickets available even on the day of show but there will also be alot of people there and I think they've reached their goal in terms of tickets sold"

Yeah no that's why Bowery Presents kept adding bands to the lineup. They have fell far short of reaching their goal of the number of tickets sold. They misread this one as well as the Interpol Msg show.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 4:29 PM

I applaud the band for not wanting to play MSG, but this was a big mistake. I never want to go near randall's island.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 4:31 PM

>>>>Yeah no that's why Bowery Presents kept adding bands to the lineup. They have fell far short of reaching their goal of the number of tickets sold. They misread this one as well as the Interpol Msg show <<<<<

Well they obviously want as many people to come as possible but I dont think they are adding bands to "save" the show....Arcade Fire never had problems selling tickets & I dont think they are having problems now ..I think it's an effort on all parts (band / promoter) to put together the most exciting bill as possible. Lets give everyone a little credit rather than just automatically assuming everything less than a sellout is sign of a failure...

Posted by Guy Smiley | October 1, 2007 4:46 PM

Can you cross the Triborough bridge over to Manhattan after the show, either walking or on a bike?

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 4:53 PM

you can walk/rdie over the 125 street bridge.

this show should have been at keyspan.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 5:15 PM

YEs guy smiley and let us all dream of rainbows and candy canes and a perfect world. Unfortunately they had/ have a problem selling and this is why they kept adding bands. The show is far from a success right now. Ask anyone who is actually in the concert biz and they will tell you.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2007 5:56 PM

I'm not sure why the person above insists that they are adding bands to save the show. I mean, is Les Savy Fav really helping Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem sell more tickets? And, this show was always billed as AF and LCD plus special guests and the original start time never changed. More bands were always going to be added whether tickets sold out in 5 minutes or remained outstanding the day of the show.

Posted by CN | October 1, 2007 6:07 PM

Positives: AF and LCD.
Negatives: Randall's Fucking Island

I'm so not feeling it. I've been offered tix by a few folks already and declines, so it seems like alot of people aren't feeling it.

Posted by matt | October 1, 2007 6:14 PM

the amount of people selling their tickets on craigslist is insane.

i feel like a sucker now for buying my tickets so early. by friday, people will be giving the tickets away.

I know....Trust me I know....

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2007 3:38 AM

God, I hope its not a success and then AF can go back to playing reasonably sized places. you know, like Radio City :)

who really cares if its not a success? since when did anyone care about the industry?

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2007 6:05 AM

It's only 11am, and there are already 15 people trying to get rid of tickets on Craigslist. Suckers still think they can get face value of them. They will not even get close to face value.

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2007 10:59 AM

That's one way to thwart the scalpers...play a place so big that everyone can get in & there won't be people gouging on craigslist , etc. I'm sure this played some part in deciding to play such a big place since all their NY shows in the last few years have resulted in such ticket craziness. There seems to be alot of people on there who very suddenly can't go....ha

Posted by RT | October 2, 2007 11:18 AM

why would you get them at craigs list if you can just walk up to mercury lounge and get them with no service fee?

lets just hope it doesnt get cancelled like GZA and Morrisey.

Whats it like driving to Randall Island?

Posted by Mike C | October 2, 2007 2:01 PM

driving is rather painless, and probably the easiest way of getting there. the island is literally just off the triborough bridge, which if you are driving through manhattan is right off the eastside of 125th steet.

parking is expensive though, at 10 bucks, and if i remember correctly you have to take a shuttle from the parking site to the venue.

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2007 2:09 PM

its kind of unfortunate.

i have nothing against these bands, and would actually probably pay to see them at other venues, but the idea of this show doesnt sound fun at all to me.

It seems more like a hassle.

And it seems like a lot of other people arent feeling it either. I dont hope that the show is bad, but i hope the results make it so that bands (like AF, LCD) dont try something like this in the future.

Im all for trying new things, and big far away venue doesnt equal bad (daft punk was great), but i just dont see this being fun. maybe if this was my first concert experience (not knocking any noobs) maybe it would, but as someone whos been a good amount of shows, i never liked this idea.

Posted by applesauce | October 2, 2007 2:12 PM

When I saw the Cure, Curioso festival you just paid and parked in a field and walked over to venue. No shuttle.

Driving is the way to go if you have a car, however getting out of there when the show is over is kind of a pain with the traffic of everyone else getting out. At least 30 min to leave. But getting there is fine. Also, be sure to remember where you parked. Very difficult to find your car in packed field.

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2007 2:16 PM

does anyone know if they allow tailgating in the parking lot?

i know ticketmaster says is not permitted, but i was wondering if that rule was enforced in the past.

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2007 2:27 PM

waaa waaa...a bunch of good, some great, bands outdoors on a weekend in NYC

yea that really sucks

for all those "not feeling it," here's some words of wisdom:

stay home

i'm sure whatever you plan on doing instead is AWESOME! laundry? going to the movies? cleaning the litter box?

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2007 2:33 PM

sharon jones at the apollo >>> arcade fire with 20000

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2007 2:40 PM

look duder,

im not crying about and i never said "it really sucks"

it seems that most of the people "not feeling it" arent really complaining that hard either.

you know, sometimes the logistics around a show arent the best. this is a forum where we can all discuss this.

i find the show to be unfortunate because its not my ideal show (just my opinion) and because how others are feeling about the show.

im really not doing anything too exciting on saturday. probably going to hang out with some friends. drink some beers. and watch the phillies beat the rockies.

is it AWESOME! stuff? no, its not. but for me, (and it seems quite a few others) its better then going to randals island for a show where the doors open at 330

Posted by applesauce | October 2, 2007 3:37 PM

i agree with 'waaa waaa'... seriously. it's an end-of-summer saturday - outside - hanging out with your friends (if your downer attitudes haven't scared them away)- with great music playing in the background. you can engage or just chill on a blanket - at least that's what i did at the Curiosa festival - mogwai, rapture, and interpol... great lineup.

sure, EVERYONE knows it's better at the smaller venues, but for someone who keeps missing AF at the smaller venues - i'm just excited to see them and the other bands too. also, if i remember correctly, randall's island wasn't as bad as other huge venues...

def not a pollyanna, but i don't get it - who cares?
if you're going - why the bitching? enjoy it for what it is.
and if you're not going - why the bitching? it doesn't even affect you. stop being an a-hole purist.
(i'm not talking to you, applesauce - you make sense... was talking to some of the anonymouses and especially the one who keeps tripping on his ego and pride about 'knowing' the industry).
hehe... i rarely comment but this was fun.
see you at the show!

Posted by h | October 3, 2007 1:07 PM

hey can anyone confirm the estimated time for Arcadde fire to start playing on Saturday?

I was also going to sell my ticket but just found out about these 4 bands before, so maybe I can make it:)

"i wouldn't expect arcade fire to go on til at least 830 or 9. i would think the set times are going to break down something like this: (NOTE: THIS IS PURE SPECULATION; NOTHING OFFICIAL ABOUT IT AT ALL)

Doors-330
345-415 Wild Light
445-530 Les Savy Fav
600-645 Blonde Redhead
715-830 LCD
900-1045 Arcade Fire"

Posted by yo mama too | October 3, 2007 4:42 PM

anyone have definitive set times?

Posted by Anonymous | October 5, 2007 9:44 AM

Doors 3:30pm
Wild Light 5:00pm
Les Savy Fav 5:50pm
Blond Redhead 6:50pm
LCD SOUNDSYSTEM 7:55PM
Arcade Fire 9:15pm

Posted by Anonymous | October 5, 2007 9:53 AM

we're jumping at the chance to see Arcade Fire again and could care less about the venue, etc. we saw them with LCD Soundsystem at Red Rocks after ACL (both incredible shows) and are ready again to see and hear spectacular music at Randall's Island. they could play in the street for all we care; we just want to be there and be immersed in the energy and experience that is an AF show. let's show them some love. they want their fans there to have a good time, and a good time we will have.

Posted by pgc | October 5, 2007 11:01 AM

Are there any restrictions about what you can bring onto the island? Couldn't find any information on the park website, but wondering if there are special restrictions for concerts. Specifically, I'd like to bring something to eat and drink and a blanket. Seems OK?

Posted by abrooklynlife | October 5, 2007 11:12 AM

once you enter do you have to stay (leave and reenter)?

Posted by pb | October 5, 2007 1:45 PM

I've never been to Randall's Island. Is the concert in an open field or is it a stadium with seats? Thanks.

Posted by UnionLarry | October 6, 2007 8:55 AM

what's the best way to get to the show... public transportation or by car? It seems like generally a pain for both although if there is plenty of parking then I might just drive there. thoughts?

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2007 9:14 AM

what a fucking great concert. too bad for all you pretentious losers out there who made a judgement on the bands/venue...you missed out on a great show.

Posted by Anonymous | October 7, 2007 2:38 AM

It was a terrific concert, and I'm at least twice the age of most of the posters here. I don't get the endless whining and complaining about everything. What is that? And what is the thing at concerts where people come and then push in front of you and talk through the whole thing, or are on their cell phones. If you're there, it's not a chance for a social connection, you can go to a bar for that.

Posted by ancient one | October 7, 2007 10:38 AM

That doesn't sound like a terrific concert at all.

Cel phones? Chatterboxes? Hordes pushing ahead? That's what people are complaining about, dipshit.

Posted by Anonymous | October 7, 2007 12:21 PM

Arcade Fire really did not live up to the 3 bands that played before them. It was a sad thing to see.

Posted by Anonymous | October 7, 2007 1:25 PM

My friend and I showed up around 430, expecting LCD to go on at 5 and Arcade at 630...we were unaware they had also added 3 other bands. Blonde Redhead had perhaps the best performance of the night, while we left midway through Arcade's set...as did at least 3/4 of the crowd that had been there earlier in the afternoon.

Posted by Anonymous | October 7, 2007 6:02 PM

how was Daft Punk?

Posted by Anonymous | October 7, 2007 6:30 PM

"how was Daft Punk?"

Ask your mom.

Posted by Anonymous | October 7, 2007 10:16 PM

All the posts here made me regret buying tix but this was an awesome show, Every band was great. It was a huge crowd but was easy to see the stage & screens.

However leaving Randalls island was a fucking nightmare, and I will never go back for this reason. still a good show though.
