Miracle Fortress @ the 2007 Polaris Awards (CRED)
Miracle Fortress

Miracle Fortress, Sunset Rubdown, Basia Bulat, Handsome Furs, The Acorn, The Besnard Lakes, Tokyo Police Club, Patrick Watson, The Weakerthans, Land of Talk and Neil Young are among the list of 33 hot Canadian bands this year. In related news, Jessie from Miracle Fortress recently left a message about their recent problem at the border....

We're sorry we missed this show guys. We were very excited to get to play at the Bowery and walk around the big beautiful streets. At least for an hour after soundcheck and before the show.

The regular protocol for Canadian bands playing unpaid showcases as we understood it, is that the festival provides the band with papers saying that the band will not be making any money and that the performance is for promotional purposes only. In fact though, as the border police made known to us, no money is allowed to change hands when a band without a work visa performs. So, while we weren't (editor's note: I think he meant "were") getting paid, because the show was not a free show, we had to turn back home and eat delicious Indian food. The border police informed us that we were going through a rite of passage. "If you are going to be a CanadianRockStar you have to get turned away by us... you know once we even turned away Céline". As if by magic doughy compensation, the indian restaurant gave us free desert. No poutine was consumed, though it did come up as an option.

Hopefully we will soon recieve our visas. We were not trying to do anything that we understood to be inadequate, illegal, or wrong. We understand that a country's borders are a sensitive thing, and we would not intentionally subvert their protective efforts. While we are sorry not to have gotten to hang out in New York and play for everyone, I know the future is big and likely full of NYC fun times.

I posted this way too late for anyone to be interested, didn't I.
oh well

"(editor's note: I think he meant 'were')"

No, it makes sense the way he wrote it.

Don't worry, J.S. CMJ and NYC are hugely overrated.

"No, it makes sense the way he wrote it."

no it doesn't.

"weren't getting paid" and "not a free show" are contradictory. It was not a free show. They were getting paid.

That's why "papers saying that the band will not be making any money and that the performance is for promotional purposes only" were invalid and "the border police made known to us, no money is allowed to change hands when a band without a work visa performs" which therefore led to them not being allowed in because they had the wrong paper. They needed a work visa.

I still believe that Jessie intentionally implies that they were not going to receive any money for performing. I presume the mention of money changing hands is a reference to the fact that attendees had to pay to get in, and that fact is what prompted the border agents to deny them entry.

ah, ok. I see your point. Jessie was wrong though. :-)

He probably didn't even realize that they were in fact getting paid a percentage of the door to play the show - probably not a huge amount since there were seven bands on the bill (and because it was CMJ and less tickets are sold than for a normal show), but something.

am i to believe that the constantines are the 34th best canadian band....pass on this list.

In response to the 12th comment from Anonymous, I just want to point out that the poll is the 'hottest Canadian artists/bands' of THIS year. As I Heart Music pointed out in the rules of his poll, the way one defines 'hottest' is subjective but in general the way most people voted(myself included) defined 'hottest' at least in part to the relevance of the band in 2007. I do not doubt that The Constantines are a great band, but really other than being signed to Arts & Crafts, they didn't do much during the year other than maybe tour a bit. I'm expecting 2008 to be the year when The Constantines are more out in the public eye.

While we're on the subject of clarifications (and I don't think the band was under the impression they were getting paid), Jessie happens to be a a very lovely GIRL.
