Plug

And the nominees for 2008 Independent Album of the Year, are....

* Arcade Fire - Neon Bible (Merge)
* Band Of Horses - Cease To Begin (Sub Pop)
* Battles - Mirrored (Warp)
* Beirut - The Flying Club Cup (Ba Da Bing)
* El-P - I'll Sleep When You're Dead (Definitive Jux)
* Justice - † (Downtown / Vice / Ed Banger)
* Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? (Polyvinyl)
* Panda Bear - Person Pitch (Paw Tracks)
* Radiohead - In Rainbows (self-released)
* Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - 100 Days, 100 Nights (Daptone)
* Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (Merge)
* The National - Boxer (Beggars Banquet)
Vote in that category and others. Thanks once again to the Plug Cartel for nominating BrooklynVegan in the "Music Blog of The Year" category. Let's see if it's possible to win two years in a row.

KALAI was about to question why M.I.A. wasn't nominated for anything, but then I remembered that it's probably because her album came out on Interscope. Major labels don't count, and that's also probably why we don't see LCD Soundsystem or Kanye West on there either. Who else is missing?

The Plug Award event will take place in NYC on March 6th at Terminal 5. Stay tuned for more details. Last year it was at Irving Plaza. The year before that at Webster Hall.

The plug awards are my enemy. Last year I stood in line for advertised tickets that didn't exist. So fuck them.

"The Justice album is called 'Cross'."

No, it's not. BV posted a press release a while back about how people needed to learn to make the cross symbol on their computers if they were going to put the album on year-end lists.

Anyone else think that a major/minor label distiction doesn't mean what it used to when the plug awards were created? Some of my favorite records this year came from majors(kings of leon, feist, white stripes)and we can all agree that just because your on an indie label doesn't automatically mean its good

How did Battles make it into "Best New Band"? EP C and EP B were way back in 2004...

Posted by chad | November 16, 2007 1:57 PM

caribou & white rabbits should be added to the list. maybe even !!!.

Posted by snip | November 16, 2007 4:00 PM

How about best NEW music blog of the year?

Seriously, I voted for BV again, well, because he deserves it and because I'm an ass kisser.

strawberry jam???

Why award bands for lacking the talent and savvy sign to a major label? If it was worth listening to, surely somebody at one of the big five corporations would be cognizant of this fact, am I right fellows? Enough with the minor league, stepping stone label wannabes already. It bores me.

I'm happy with Justice, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Panda Bear and Of Montreal...all very solid albums this year.

Simian Mobile Disco played the 500(?) capacity MHoW during CMJ. It sold out the day of the show if I'm not mistaken. Justice sold out two nights at 3,000 capacity Terminal 5, with the first night selling out well in advance. They also got a fucking VMA nom for video of the year. Still, they're eligible for the PLUG awards. SMD's album was released through Interscope, though, so they're not eligible. The major thing seems a little unfair.

Arcade Fire is about as indie as Britney Spears.

Posted by peterparker | November 17, 2007 4:50 PM

that's actually incorrect

Posted by Anonymous | November 17, 2007 6:13 PM

totally random and unrelated-but does anyone know if there are going to be pool shows at mccarren next summer?

Posted by Anonymous | November 17, 2007 9:34 PM

Aniaml Collective - Strawberry Jam
Sunset Rubdown - Random Spirit Lover (surprised it wasn't mentioned...)

Spoon CD was mediocre.
Aesop Rock's "None Shall Pass" should have made this list in El-P's spot.
