outside Brooklyn Academy of Music, NYC - Nov 3, 2007 (CRED)

Though the event had been promoted as a wild night of partying, music and movies, the overbearing rules made it more of a hostile takeover. It seemed that everywhere we went we were doing something wrong. No photos! No beer in the Opera House! No beer in the movie theater! (No seats, either.) You can’t stand here, you can’t go in through that door, you can’t go up to the café because we’ve let so many people in that human sausage links are now tumbling down the escalator! (No eating the human sausage links!)Earlier in the evening, Sufjan Stevens performed "BQE".This was BAM’s first time hosting this ambitious event – the Times describes BAM’s executive producer Joseph V. Melillo as “looking somewhat overwhelmed amid a sea of hipsters”, saying “We lost our virginity tonight.” – so we really ought to be more gentle. In theory, Takeover was an inspired and well-programmed use of the building’s superb facilities. We just hope that if and when we takeover again, they let a lot less of us in. [Gothamist]
Next up for BAM: The National.

I would not call the people who went to this Hipsters. I would call them idiots.

Sounds like hell.

November 32?
:O

it was kind of hell, the bands were crap, and the dancing upstairs was lame too. there was a line for EVERYTHING. that being said it, it was still a fun time just taking in the spectacle of it all. highlight of the night: everyone cheering and jeering in the packed lindsay lohan mid-career retrospective theatre (people were standing and sitting on the floor - and it was actually super fun).

Six of one, half dozen of the other.

^Ummm, you know that's the same thing, right?

well hypocrite, you're on a website that caters to hipsters, so sorry to tell you this, but that makes you a hipster as well.

This event was a lot of fun. Be Your Own Pet was great. Lot of people went for the movies apparently. I heard the animal movie fest was packed as well. Hope they do it again, soon. Most important, most of the poeple that showed up were pretty cool and there wasnt any sort of trouble. For next time they have to rework their will-call line, it took us about 20 minutes to get in which is I think too long. 2nd please relax the no photos rule, it was a drag constantly telling people to put their cameras away. I understand you dont want people taking pictures at the opera, but this is a rock show for gods sakes.

It was one of the best spent 15 dollars ever. I didnt see one person who wasnt enjoying themselves. Also, stippers between the bands!

be your own pet was NOT great. they were juvenile -and- generic. i really wanted to like the bands, but they were ultimately disappointing. i hope next time BAM books better acts. the night however, was great, regardless of all the chaos and lame rules , poor organization, and long lines. it was definitely a scene to behold. i'm glad i went and i would definitely go again, keeping my fingers crossed that next time there are less people there and that the BAM staff gets it together the 2nd time around.

i don't know, i mean, the crowd was far less "hipster(y)" than, say, a TV On The Radio show, a McCarren Park Pool show, etc. it seemed a pretty nice, humble crowd. yeah, it was jam packed, but people weren't rude, nor dicks, and were quite pleasant. it was nice to be able to run amok around bam, and watching Stop Making Sense with people singing in the audience was a blast. i say: do it again, sell way less tickets.

Dirty on Purpose, I think they were better last year. I think their sound now is too commercial, not weird enough. Next to last band, though a bit too generic sounding, I think they won people over on pure energy. First band It was allright folk rock thing.
The problem with booking bands for a show like this is you cant get someone too popular or thats all the people will show up for and nothing else. As it was the opera hall was never more than half full, so maybe too many people went to the other things and thats why it seemed crowded. Also I wish they had a regular ballroom instead of that little space upstairs, there just wasnt enough space.
But still I think the idea was brilliant. oh and next time I wish they had some better food there, I mean people get hungry!

popular doesn't necessarily equate with good. they can still book lesser known acts that are still good quality bands. there's tons of relatively unknown, obscure, lesser-known real talent out there. get on it young BAM staffers, please no more crap bands the next time around. book interesting brooklyn based acts like dirty projectors, soft circle, o'death, the list is endless here...

How was Antibalas?
Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2007 4:12 PM
sufjan was where to be
Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2007 4:21 PM
I went to Land Without Sun instead of Antibalas.
Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2007 4:31 PM
i was standing under the BQE that night and, i gotta say, it's not that impressive.
Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2007 4:34 PM
the staff was annoying. don't take a picture. don't walk here. don't have fun. don't you do that.
be your own pet sucked the life out of anything holy.
the best part was free Donky Kong.
BAM, do it again, book better acts, and if you claim you're hosting a "takeover" be less anal.

My favorite part was watching I Know Who Killed Me with the best audience ever.
Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2007 11:54 PM
I Know Who Killed Me did have a killer audience. I've never had so much fun out at the movies. All the shouting and jeering and cheering and raucous laughter. I'll always remember it as one of the highlights of my movie going experiences.
Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2007 12:54 AM
The same! The guy in front of me had the most distinctive laugh I think I've ever heard in my entire life. You probably heard it. What a perfect ending to the night...

You guys are crazy, Be Your Own Pet rocked the house. Yeah they are sort of juvenile, but guess what they are all still 18 and 19 years old, for gods sakes! Jemina put on a great performance as well, crawling around on the floor, dancing etc. I loved it. SO there, go listen to Vampire Weekend if you dont like it, if thats up your alley.
Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2007 9:32 AM
vampire weekend isn't that great either, but they -are- WAY better than be your own pet who just need to keep their pets to themselves.
Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2007 12:26 PM
Be Your Own Pet are not a good band. Please do not disagree with this point, as your musical tastes and opinions are wrong. What I like is all that matters. Also, Dirty On Purpose are medicre at best, and Antibalas was alot more fun 8 years ago. That is all.
