Linda SteinLinda Stein

A Manhattan personal assistant has told investigators that she fatally bludgeoned her boss, the well-connected real estate agent Linda Stein, in the woman’s opulent Fifth Avenue apartment because Ms. Stein swore at her, waved a stick at her and blew marijuana smoke into her face, the police said today.

The assistant, Natavia Lowery, 26, of Brooklyn, was arrested this morning. At an afternoon news conference, Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said Ms. Lowery had told the police that she struck Ms. Stein six or seven times on Oct. 30 with a four-pound exercise stick. [NY Times]

Murder is bad (, but damn, her furs makes me mad). Linda Stein used to manage the Ramones and was married to Sire Records founder Seymour Stein (hence the coverage of the murder of this NYC socialite on this blog).

Ugh! I can't stand to look at her ugly face! Move on, this is not news!!!

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2007 8:04 PM

it makes me a little sick that the fact that she wore fur is even mentioned in this.

Bad timing as the Crowes were dressing up as the Ramones for Halloween but shelved the costumes last minute the night before when this went down...That wouldve been funny shit

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2007 11:00 PM

dude, this is beyond rude....regardless of your stance on fur....or the Ramones' leather jackets for that matter...the friggin' woman was murdered. to deah, and found by her daughter.

i agree with anon 1:24

bad taste brooklynvegan.

Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2007 2:05 AM

She didn't deserve getting murdered.
The animals whose pelts she wore didn't deserve getting killed.
These two statements are not mutually exclusive.
So what if it's insensitive to criticize her wearing of fur? The lives of animals who may die because of their fur may depend on it. And I say this as a non-vegetarian.

Beat on the brat
Beat on the brat
Beat on the brat with a yoga stick

Now THATS bad taste.

(, but damn, her furs makes me mad).

Personally, it is that first extraneous and erroneous comma which I found in poor taste.

Thank you 7:20am. Chinchillas, Rabbits, Mink, Foxes....uh, yeah it's all murder. and thank you BV for starting this. You can absolutely decry what happened to Linda and at the same time, rightly decry the wearing of other slaughtered species.

it is really sad that there are human beings out there who get more riled by the killing of animals than the killing of a human being. it is horrible that our culture has de-sensitized us to the point where news of a dead person has little visceral response anymore. we can hear that 200 people died in iraq today without batting an eye, but when we fiind out that michael vick killed however many dogs over the course of 5 years, he becomes the world's greatest villain just because we're not used to seeing this. animal rights activism is another irrational bastard child of sensationalist media.

Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2007 12:08 PM

Let's not forget PETA's infamous 2003 letter to Arafat expressing outrage at the use of donkeys in suicide attacks. The letter failed to express any notion of outrage over the killing of innocent people in suicide attacks.

is there any weed left? beat on the former ramones manager with a baseball bat!

"it is really sad that there are human beings out there who get more riled by the killing of animals than the killing of a human being."

did anyone actually express that here? did BV?

I think 7:20am got it right. Because she died, it doesnt make the act of wearing fur excusable. For someone who cares about animals (ummm BV), theres no reason for him to ignore that because of the bigger picture. And the bigger picture isnt made less because the fur issue was raised. I dont think its too hard to discern that.

"we can hear that 200 people died in iraq today without batting an eye"

do you even read the paper or watch the news? where are you getting your figures from?

"when we fiind out that michael vick killed however many dogs over the course of 5 years, he becomes the world's greatest villain"

"worlds greatest villain"?

your exaggerated statements takeaway from the points you are trying to bring up

Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2007 6:41 PM

i don't think its too hard to discern that out of respect for a murdered individual, we should refrain from making snide comments someone who was bludgeoned to death wearing bludgeoned animals.

no, today specifically, 200 people did not die in iraq. if you are honestly questioning whether or not there have been days where 200 people have died in iraq however, you should read the paper or watch the news. or, you know, start counting iraqis as people i guess? i don't know.

as per the michael vick part of my argument: were you alive this summer? i do remember several animal rights activists picketing outside of the nfl headquarters calling for michael vick's execution. i don't know, my job is literally to watch tv and report what's going on to the people above me, and i saw a whole lot more about michael vick being evil than, say, kim jong il.

I like when rich fucks get offed.
I am very glad she no longer breathes my air.
Fuck her.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2007 12:30 AM

I hope this becomes a trend. I nominate Robert Scarano Jr. as the next multi-millionaire real estate asshole to be bludgeoned to death.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2007 12:37 AM

you know she must have been a really shitty terrible person to drive her personal assistant to that breaking point. Either that, or this assistant was crazy. Not that it excuses it, but it explains it.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2007 1:48 AM

that will teach her to blow marijuana smoke in hired help's face. that is assault. she is now in pergatory waiting to join me in heaven. i think she might end up in hell.

Posted by joey ramone | November 11, 2007 1:52 AM

I usually do not have a problem with your posts Mr. BV. However, this was the most inappropriate and disgraceful post I have ever seen on your site. The fact that you mention that she is wearing furs and even attempt to imply that it is relevant here disgusts me.
You should be ashamed of this and I hope you practice more sound judgment in the future.

Posted by Blah | November 11, 2007 11:08 AM

let this be a lesson to all who espouse racist beliefs. free your mind or keep your mouth shut.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2007 3:51 PM

you continue to disappoint your readers with your lack of taste and tact. it really is quite a shame. but i guess that is what happens when you go from being someone with a little blog about music to not giving a shit about anything you post, support or say.

Posted by shelvesofvinyl | November 11, 2007 8:08 PM

shelvesofvinyl, you're a piece of shit. how many times does BV post questionable content? last time i checked, its his blog,so that should allow him to post what he like. most people dont seem to mind.

how is he not giving shit about any he posts? if anything he posts these things that upset you because he does give a shit about them? how is that hard to understand?

oh, and anon 12:08, if you job is to watch a lot of tv, i hope its not to write about it as well, because you seem to do a poor job at that.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2007 10:35 PM

I agree it is BV's blog and therefore he can say anything that he wants on it. Of course he does provide for a system of anonymous and open commentary, which means that anyone should be free to criticize him when they feel that he has said something distasteful. Its a double edged sword what distinguishes this site in part and consequentially what leads to alot of the hits on this site is the commentary system, but at the same time he can be called out on his own site and its fair game.

Anon 1:48 - if you're an assistant to an awful boss, the appropriate response is to quit, and, if warranted, to sue, but certainly not to kill. The few posts in this thread suggesting that Linda Stein's murder is in any way understandable or justifiable are made by people with absolutely no sense of perspective.

Also, no need to bash BV - he isn't suggesting Linda's murder was ok because she wore fur. He said that the fur "makes [him] mad." Nothing wrong with that, despite the slightly inappropriate timing (as alongside the post about Linda's death).

"Stein's murder is in any way understandable or justifiable are made by people with absolutely no sense of perspective."

This whole affair reminds me of a timely Sam Kinison quote: "I can't condone spouse abuse; I understand it! But I can't condone it."

Seriously, treat your assistants right. Your life might depend on it...
