I spent much of this weekend (and this morning) listening to Phosphorescent's excellent new album Pride - out now on Dead Oceans. If I had to describe it, I'd say it fits in nicely with its label-mate Dirty Projectors, but is more like (a lot like) Will Oldham (aka Bonnie Prince Billy) with a bit of Neil Young and Sufjan Stevens thrown into the mix. (read Pitchfork's review for a more thorough analysis).
Then I got excited today when I remembered that Phosphorescent has two NYC shows scheduled for this week - Silent Barn on Friday (November 9th) & Cake Shop on Saturday (the old dates had that order reversed in case you're confused like I just was). Bodies of Water also play both shows.
Bodies of Water

Bodies of Water are a quartet from LA creating 60's Pop-folk numbers, complete with four-part harmonies and buckets of choral chanting. Their new album Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink was self-released through the band's own Thousand Tongues label, and has been getting good reviews all over the place. [Covert Curiosity]Then coincidentally Dead Oceans asked me if I'd like to do a giveaway for these shows today, and I said "yes, that's perfect thanks". Contest details, and updated tour dates, below....
I've got a pair of tickets to Cake Shop, a pair to Silent Barn, and two copies of "Pride" on vinyl. To win, e-mail: BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (put the prize name you want in the subject). Also include your first and last name. I'll email back four winners picked at random - one winner for each prize. Your email will not be sold to anyone or anything like that.

phos is a great album honestly...but its too much of a process to listen to ...like its not enjoyable to throw on in the middle of the day or if you are just chillin at your computer

Friday should be a great show. The opening band JOLIE LAIDE is pretty amazing too! Saw them at Southpaw a few months back and they kicked ass.

anyone happen to see this guys interview in Gothamist.
"We were kicked out of the Washington DC club last night for drunken-ness and rowdy but gentle mayhem."
"Pride. It's a great record. It's easily the best record released this year and probably of the last ten years. I haven't heard anything that comes close."
what a dick!
