The Clean - last night @ Other Music + 4 more shows

The Clean played Other Music yesterday (about 8-9 songs), and they're playing Cake Shop on November 29th, 30th & December 1st. Cake Shop's MySpace says, "(no advance tickets. to rsvp, send an email to cakeshopnyc@gmail.com specifying the amount you need and the day you want.)". They're also playing Philly on December 2nd.
The Clean were a band that formed in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1978. Led through a number of rotating line-ups by brothers Hamish and David Kilgour, the band (usually a trio), forged a distinctive and quirky sound that relied heavily on organ melodies and simple chord progressions.See who else is playing Other Music.

What a sad commentary on the musical knowledge of blog readers that you have to tell people who The Clean are (not "were," as quoted in the--I'm guessing--All Music excerpt above).
People should be going nuts that they are playing four shows on US soil. As Other Music put it in their bulletin: "As far as we can tell, this band
invented indie rock, and their songs are indelible to the very fabric of Other Music."
Not criticizing BV, just pointing out how ridiculous it is that most indie fans these days don't even seem to know The Clean, let alone The Bats, The Chills, The Verlaines, et. al.

i rsvp'ed cakeshop last weekend, asking for tickets for the saturday show. they got back to me after a few days saying saturday is sold out. (wtf?! how, if no advance tickets?) i sent anther email asking for friday tickets. again, same thing. in the email, they said all three shows are sold out. i called cakeshop; the person there said fri and sat are sold out, but thu is not. their (cakeshop's) fuckin website says sat is sold out, but fri and thu are not.
WHAT THE FUCK?

Not really. The Clean (along with those other obscure Down Under bands) were of the cultiest cult status even when they were cultedly popular. BV's fine to explain who they are/were. Cool songs, but part of US music fans' everyday lives? I think not.

the clean anthology came out in 2003 on merge - you know that label that a couple...er, few really popular bands are on.
you don't have to be old to know.

Posted by Anonymous | November 30, 2007 2:09 PM
to anyone who went-
did you have advance tickets or were they letting people in at the door?
Posted by Anonymous | November 30, 2007 2:21 PM
two openers, starting at 9:30 and 10:30
clean go on at 11:30
seems to be rsvp and list only
standing outside before the show i saw friends of the opening ask for help getting in, but they couldn't
cake shop seems to be taking the rsvp seriously
the clean were good, but its cake shop so sightlines more than sucked
push your way through the crowd- there were plenty of holes to fill up front
