The Fiery Furnaces played Hiro Ballroom + videos

the Fiery Furnaces @ Hiro Ballroom, NYC - Nov 3, 2007 (CRED)

Of a good thing, mostly, and in any case that seems to be the point. At a time when indie bands and their devotees are worried about short, blog-enabled cycles of hype and backlash, the Fiery Furnaces have decided to reward their fans by overwhelming them. In a few years the Friedbergers have gone from promising upstarts (on “Gallowsbird’s Bark”) to celebrated indie favorites (with “Blueberry Boat” in 2004) to polarizing iconoclasts (with “Rehearsing My Choir” from 2005, a song cycle starring their grandmother, Olga Sarantos) to respected veterans. If that means they’re now playing Hiro Ballroom a few years after playing for a much bigger crowd at Town Hall — well, neither of them seems too worried. [NY Times]
NYC Taper taped the show. The Fiery Furnaces also recently played live on KCRW. Listen to, or watch, that. Their new album Widow City is out now. Related videos, below....

"Thank God"?

Get a life. And so the hipster tide turns again...

They put on an incredible show at Maxwell's a few months back.

They're also playing the Music Hall of Williamsburg next month. Tix on sale this week.

tides turn all the time. get over it. the only thing in life that is constant is change itself. get used to it. get over it. move on.

Not sure how their "time is up". They just put out an amazing album, which has received almost universally excellent reviews. They're in the middle of a tour playing good-sized venues to large crowds. The band is playing tight sets with a good representation of their material.

At this point, Fiery Furnaces are at the top of their game. If their "time is up" to have idiot fake-hipsters show up at their shows to see-and-be-seen, and spend the entire show texting their fake friends, then that's probably a good thing.

I didn't like the new record so much. still a good band... just not enjoying their latest. I hope i'm still cool.

what's with all the talk about cool and hip and hipster and idiot fake-hipsters. will it ever cease? can't we just focus on the music people (hip, and non-hip, and all those in between)?

"what's with all the talk about cool and hip and hipster and idiot fake-hipsters. will it ever cease? can't we just focus on the music people (hip, and non-hip, and all those in between)?"

A VOICE OF REASON in a sea of poo poo and poo pooers.

Well sorry to be a poo-poo'er of the poo-poo'ers, but the annoying "time is up" comment really did piss me off.

you haven't been enjoying this record (inferring you've enjoyed the last two pieces of shit?)???

REALLY?

the new record is the best thing they've done since Blueberry Boat.

i thought bitter tea was great. and some of the songs on choir, as well, believe it or not. faster hammers.

Wow. Not one mention of The Sonics or Cavestomp anywhere on this blog. 2 packed nights at Warsaw warrants nothing? I like the Furnaces to but will they be greeted as liberators forty years from now?

Posted by noisejoke | November 5, 2007 8:13 PM

I wanted to see Cavestomp out of curiosity but couldn't. How was it?

"Greeted as liberators"? Um, world war two is over. Oh, and the Fiery Furnaces are a band, you dramatic asshole
