Win Butler hit, pissed, dressed for Halloween
Arcade Fire - Oct 31, 2007

Arcade Fire's Win Butler was hit in the face by a bottle during last night's (October 31) gig in Nottingham. The band, who were dressed in Halloween costumes (pictured), were playing 'Neighbourhood #3 (Power Out)' when he got hit. Butler changed the lyrics to: "Where'd you go? / No seriously/ Where'd you go you fucker?"See also: Will Butler vs. Sasha Frere-JonesThe band went off stage and returned for a performance of 'Rebellion (Lies)' and, according to a witness, "someone threw something again". Butler stopped playing for a second time and told the audience: "We''ll never play Nottingham again" before continuing with the song. [NME]

that is quite rude of both parties involved.

Both parties? Not really, how would you feel playing and having a bottle thrown at your face and being hit almost twice? I've stayed in Nottingham for a while and that place can get pretty rowdy. Mainly just drunks, like most of England. I cant say that I'm surprised.

nah, just the dude who threw the bottle.

"We'll never play Nottingham again"
It is so childish... If Iggy Pop had reacted this way, he wouldn't be able to tour anymore!

Just lucky they never played in Hull.
Posted by mynameisTom | November 1, 2007 2:33 PM
he's really becoming a prissy jerk.
Posted by Anonymous | November 1, 2007 2:35 PM
You wads are joking, right? Please, let me throw a beer bottle at your faces.
Posted by Wackamole | November 1, 2007 2:39 PM
Yeah, I mean he was right to get pissed at the bottle being thrown.
But saying your never playing the place again pisses on the 99% of the crowd that was pretty cool.
Its understandable cause we are human.
But it was a tad rude.

I feel bad for him, but it's not fair to think the whole of Nottingham equals one or a couple of jerks who threw the bottle(s).
Posted by Anonymous | November 1, 2007 2:42 PM
he probably just got caught up in the moment. people might say anythign after getting hit in the face with a bottle.
Posted by Anonymous | November 1, 2007 2:49 PM
The bottle thrower was probably upset with how well maintained Win's teeth were.

I can't imagine trying to give a good performance while constantly being on the lookout for glass flying at your face. Someone should've pointed the asshole out.

"We''ll never play Nottingham again"
one person does not a crap town make. i've played all over this country but luckily have only had one bottle thrown at me while on stage in NM. would i go back to that same venue and town? absolutely... it was a great gig and the bottle narrowly missing my face only pissed me off and made me play better.
Posted by Anonymous | November 1, 2007 3:14 PM
yeah, and he's a shit musician.

The article mentions a bottle, but there is a big difference with a tiny empty Evian plastic bottle and heavy glass Double Diamond. My guess is that it was an empty plastic one, a glass bottle point-blank-range might not have give him the opportunity to change the lyrics.
"someone threw something again"... it does not say what, for all we know, it might have been some panties...
Posted by Anonymous | November 1, 2007 3:18 PM
in the UK, throwing bottles is a compliment.

Wow, the english are good for something, who knew!
Aracade fire suck.

Yes, Win is a rude, prissy jerk because some jackasses were throwing shit at him in the middle of a show - including something that hit him smack in the face - and in a moment of anger he said he would never play Nottingham again. There is some discussion whether it was a shoe, a bottle or a glowstick, but quite frankly, it doesn't matter. I would be extremely angry if any of those things came anywhere near my head.
If you go to the NME article and read the comments made by people who were actually at the show, you would see the band played the rest of the show, including an encore and that it was excellent as usual.
So who are the real rude, prissy jerks? I'm guessing it's some of the commenters on this post.

jens?

this reminds me of the time freshman year at college when somebody threw a shoe at the singer in live. it nailed his face and he threw down the guitar and called the crowd a bunch of motherfuckers. the band didn't know what happened and one by one ducked off stage while the others played.
i don't think anybody was too pissed they didn't finish the set.
Posted by Anonymous | November 1, 2007 3:45 PM
^^ Should have thanked the guy.
Posted by Anonymous | November 1, 2007 3:58 PM
he actually said we will never play again IF something else is thrown on stage...
I think you guys should just receive a full bottle in your face...I think your first reaction would be anger...
if you don't understand his response and all that, you are just an asocial animal...

maybe they thought win was thirsty.
Posted by Anonymous | November 1, 2007 4:28 PM
it's because he stole a basketball and doesn't play Black music
Posted by Anonymous | November 1, 2007 4:38 PM
finally people are getting to see what kind of pissed asshole he is. He should have thrown the bottle back at them and go on with the gig
Posted by Anonymous | November 1, 2007 4:41 PM
Fuck that. Win was assaulted. He didn't physically hurt someone when said he wouldn't play there again. Don't even compare the two.

he's a total cock and it reminds me of when he smashed a camera on uk tv a while ago.

He's lucky he didn't get shot in the face. Nottingham IS the gun capital of England

I heard that if you people keep on writing bad stuff about Win he will do...something.
But first he has to do a web site about it, leak the information to Pitchfork and then you will know how severe your punishment will be.

hey shana, lighten up francis.

I was on the front row. It was a plastic bottle - not a glass one, not a shoe, not a glowstick. NME is full of shit. He didn't change the lyrics, he interrupted the song to address the crowd. Also, he didn't say he would never play Nottingham again. A good five minutes after the bottle incident, some other asshole threw something AGAIN. I couldn't see what it was, but it was smaller than a bottle. And that's when Win said, "One more thing and we're never playing fucking Nottingham again, I'm warning you." He said it as a threat, so that the morons would stop, and also because he was, understandably enough, pissed off. It shouldn't be taken literally, and it shouldn't be made such a big deal out of.

brilliant people should be excused from all moral judgment

I was at that gig; he rightly was really angry at first, however they played three more songs after he got hit. When they played "Wake Up" at the end of the set, Win got off the stage and sang the song whilst walking through the crowd. After they finished, he got back on stage, threw handfuls of candy into the crowd and shouted "Happy Halloween!".
It was ugly at first, but I think it had blown over after 10 minutes.

why were they in Nottingham in the first place? Not too many bands go through that town. Win- next time just stick to London.
Posted by Anonymous | November 2, 2007 9:01 AM
Twas a basketball. Win pledged; "Damn and curse to you all of Nottingham. I shall return only to steal thy balls and serve them to the poor". And so twill be done.

What kind of idiot throws a bottle at Win Butler? I would not fuck with that dude. He's like 6'6, and I wouldn't put it past him to do something crazy!
I'm glad he got over it and finished the show nicely though..
Man, I'd like to find the fucker who threw the bottle at him. Arcade Fire fans are feirce some of them. I'm sure that guy got what he had coming. If not from Win, then the fans for sure.
Fucking idiots man..... do not throw things at performers! I wouldn't even throw a bottle at Carrie Underwood. Jesus...
Posted by Maya | November 6, 2007 11:29 AM
Seriously, how do you pay to see someone perform and then so something incredibly rude like that? Don't act like you wouldn't have reacted the same way.
Childish? Win did not act childish.
Doing it once was forgiveable, I suppose, but again not long later? Seriously. That's just a complete asshole move. I'm glad he won't be playing there anymore. They've got better places to play and better fans to entertain.

All of these comments (except for one) avoid THE central point concerning Arcade Fire: they're over-hyped, overrated crap. Plain and simple.
It's not cool to throw shit at bands though, even if they suck as much as Arcade Fire do.
