Great for Africa, When you coming back to NYC?

Posted by Oldschoolbrian | December 19, 2007 9:40 PM

DO I HAVE THIS RIGHT? SHE'S GOING TO TRY TO RAISE MONEY FOR AFRICA *IN* AFRICA?

Posted by SNARKY MCSNARKERSON | December 19, 2007 10:17 PM

No , its about helping these countries get fresh water supplies

info here-

Oh. I didn't know she moonlighted as a hydrologist.

Posted by Snarky McSnarkerson | December 20, 2007 1:11 AM

is she under the impression that Ethiopia, Kenya, Bangladesh and India are cities? And does she actually propose to drive from Ethiopia to India by 4x4? Or is this statement just incredibly poorly written?

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 1:18 AM

incredibly poorly written... she does talk about flights, which precludes the "from ethiopia to india by 4x4" interpretation.

at any rate, the appropriate response (i.e., by someone who is not as morally depraved as the readers of this fine blog) would be: good for you, chan!

Well, even if she has no idea what she's doing, at least she's doing something.

Posted by collective family | December 20, 2007 6:22 AM

Chan doing something worthwhile and meaningful with her time

vs.

Moronic cynics on this site who look for any reason to make their insignificant voices heard

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 9:08 AM

Why does she need to talk in caps? MIA as well..we understand what you're saying, regardless of whether you are in caps or not!

Anyway, Chan is gorgeous, so I'll cut her some slack.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 9:49 AM

yes , the most important part of this whole thing is definitely semantics....not helping people...

Posted by RT | December 20, 2007 10:08 AM

Nice pic, there BV...when will the animal kingdom learn that eating meat is so very, very wrong?

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 10:44 AM

O.K., Cat Power defenders: What will she do there to bring more and cleaner water to the residents of the places she whill visit?

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 12:32 PM

is it possible that a newly detox'd Chan Marshall's urine may be cleaner than the water that is giving people in African guinea worm?

Posted by odray | December 20, 2007 3:35 PM

I guess I'm more of a common sense defender.. which seems in short supply in these comments...I don't think anyone but Chan could tell you exactly what she'll be doing but if people would take just a little bit of time and follow the link in her message you'd get some idea or you can just be snarky. Like the person who said , when is she coming back to NYC ? when her tour dates are listed 4 inches away with NYC listed first

it seems she will be with this organization

http://www.charitywater.org/

and this is likely the project that she's involved with

http://www.charitywater.org/waterprojects.htm

Posted by Jason | December 20, 2007 4:41 PM

When did writing in all caps become cool?

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 4:57 PM

Malaria pills for those locations? Unnecessary. She must be really paranoid.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 5:37 PM

jeez..

I imagine she is being advised by the organization she going with and they have been there many times

also:

http://www.cdc.gov/malaria/travel/index.htm

not to mention, being that project involves providing water in undeveloped areas that she will be out in the fields quite a bit
..why take a chance ?

Posted by Jason | December 20, 2007 6:09 PM

Jason: I *did* click on the link in her message.

How's this for common sense: Unless she's got some specialized skill, wouldn't this cause be better served by a donation of the money that will go to pay for her transportation to these areas?

Furthermore, the Web page at the link you provided lists only nations in Africa. It doesn't mention India or Bangladesh.

Posted by Snarky McSnarkerson | December 20, 2007 6:24 PM

Yes but two out of the 4 places are in Africa....

as far as the rest, here's more info

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/page/news/47551-cat-power-plans-charity-mission-abroad

perhaps you can send her a message on myspace if you want her to explain more..

are you interested in going & helping or donating ? or doing just about anything else constructive instead of criticizing ?

Posted by Jason | December 20, 2007 7:29 PM

From the Pitchfork item:

"Charity: [www.charityis.org] lists among its goals 'stimulating greater global awareness about extreme poverty, educating the public, and provoking compassionate and intelligent giving,' and its [sic] the awareness in particular that Marshall hopes to bolster. She plans to have her trip filmed, and she'll also journal about her experiences and share photos; internet pending, she may even release a few dispatches directly from the road."

Now, if that, or a link to it, had been in BV's post, I wouldn't have snarked about her trip. (I still would've snarked about her use of all caps.)

To answer your closing question: No.

Merry Christmas!

Holy shit! I'm going to Africa (Tanzania) in 6 days! and I'm staying for over two months. Is there anyone that has any more info about this? Is she playing any shows or "just" other things? It would be amazing to catch a Cat Power show in Africa...

Posted by idioten | December 21, 2007 5:32 AM

"It would be amazing to catch a Cat Power show in Africa..."

What makes you say that? I hope it's not "OMG there are venues in Africa!"

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2007 2:13 PM

It cause that would be the last thing I would expect to find in Africa... American indie artists seldom play shows there... And it would be awesome to catch any of my favourite bands down there. not just Cat Power...

Posted by idioten | December 21, 2007 5:32 PM

I wonder if she'll fumble her way through her songs in Africa like she has everytime I've seen her in NY?
