"PC users in the United States are less likely to pay to download music than Apple Mac users, who are also more likely to purchase CDs, a market research firm said Wednesday." [Information Week]

That's because all of the piracy programs for macs SUCK!

and mac users tend to be pretentious.

Posted by chris | December 20, 2007 10:07 AM

i wonder if thats because mac users are rich.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 10:10 AM

i was going to say the class differences between the users. people with more well off tend to buy macs, people not so well off tend to buy pcs.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 10:12 AM

and mac people 'with more well off' have better grammar than pc users.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 10:18 AM

class differences?? bwahahahaha!

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 10:21 AM

Acquisition works okay.

Posted by drewo | December 20, 2007 10:26 AM

I hope that stupid looking kid in the above pic gets arrested. I download music too, but that kid has it coming...C'MON, just look at him!!!

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 10:29 AM

it's all psychological. if anyone is willing to make the change from PC to Mac it's like starting off on a clean slate. so many Mac owners probably see it as an atonement for their illegally downloading sins, and want to keep their computers clean with legal downloads. it's easier having iTunes pre-installed too, whereas the first thing most new-PC users probably get is a virus.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 10:53 AM

mac users tend to be less tech savvy than pc users.

i wouldnt say it's neccessarily a class thing. my pc cost more than any mac on the market. the pc market is simply a much larger market, in both the high and low ed, so of course you're going to skewed results with the mac demographic.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 10:54 AM

It's not a class, or money thing. I know tons of people who whored themselves out to get a MAC because they thought it would make them look, 'Oh so cool'. Whatever.

Posted by HeyMe | December 20, 2007 11:07 AM

Really? You know people who sold their bodies for a Mac? Or do you mean something else?

Buying a computer to be cool is stupid. I bought a Mac because it's stable and easy to use.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 11:13 AM

yeah the "mac as a status symbol" thing is completely artificial. a lot of PCs cost more and perform better.

the main variable here is i-tunes. perhaps we could find a correlation between the utter sheepish conformity of mac users and their willingness to pay for something when they don't have to.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 11:13 AM

"pay for something when they don't have to"

Hey, asshole: Just because you have the ability to do something doesn't mean you should actually do it.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 11:21 AM

I'm calling it right now: this will be the epically lame comment thread of the day, if not the entire week.

Posted by baaaa-a-a-a-a | December 20, 2007 11:21 AM

paying for music = sheepish???

paying for music = sheepish???

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 11:29 AM

I owe all my recent popularity to my new Mac. Without it, I wouldn't have met all my new cool friends or gained the success I have just now attained.

"the main variable here is i-tunes. perhaps we could find a correlation between the utter sheepish conformity of mac users and their willingness to pay for something when they don't have to."

for many of the mac users i know, this is absolutely true.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 12:48 PM

Interesting side-note: the same study showed that when they're not busy gaming, PC users are more likely to beat off to internet porn.

Posted by Steve Jobs | December 20, 2007 12:49 PM

Most Mac users go to iTunes because they can't figure out how to "Save As..." without the right-click on the mouse.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 12:59 PM

Internet porn sucks. With iMovie, I can edit my own porn and share it with friends and family.

PC's are fine... but Windows is a terrible operating system.

Posted by Hello. I'm a Mac. | December 20, 2007 1:07 PM

i think it's cause PC tends to lend itself to people with the technical capability to download music, whereas MACs lend themselves to people who like shiny white round things.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 1:12 PM

i ran the most successful company in the world and we used Macs. Unforunately, we aren't able to communicate with any other businesses, so we failed. now i am sad.

Mac users, by definition, have more money than sense , and vice versa.

Posted by joly | December 20, 2007 1:39 PM

it sure is easier to pirate on my mac, what with all these free CPU cycles not eaten up by some antivirus software that doesn't work anyway.

How easy would it be to manipulate a set of data to find the result your client (Apple or a subsidiary) is paying for, without the hassle of peer review? For example, no mention of Apple's mean demographic in comparison with PC's is present in this, which seems like an important variable. Economics aside, old people don't buy or steal music online. And they don't own Macs.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 3:55 PM

i have a mac so i can pretend to add nonexistent shorts on them and "edit the sad parts" i also use it to work on some illmatic beats and hope i could sell them to someone so i could eat some meat. i also enjoy macs because of those warped pictures i post on some stupid blog or facebook or myspace, and have a funny tag that reads "my morning appearance." all in all, mac are way better, and with these features i pay for my music online, but i steal programs like final cut pro and shit because it cost so much money.

i love how people think macs dont have right clicks.

its not 1985.

ATTN: PC USERS!!!!

Please avoid opening any emails that contain any of the following in the subject header: "Hey" "Hello" "No Subject" "Hi" "Just wanted to say hi" "Your Royal Highness of Nigeria" "Hey buddy" "Haven't spoken in a while"

These seemingly harmless emails may contain a major virus that will turn your computer into a paperweight.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 4:56 PM

"i love how people think macs dont have right clicks.
its not 1985."

i love how people think pcs crash all the time

its not 1995.

Posted by linux user | December 20, 2007 5:38 PM

Anon 4:56: just curious, where is my right click button? my 2005 iBook seems to be missing one.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 5:46 PM

"Hey, asshole: Just because you have the ability to do something doesn't mean you should actually do it."

hey asshole: it was obviously tongue-in-cheek. no one's writing a harvard thesis here so don't give me philosophical ethics 101.

anyone who's read any thread like this on BV in the past can see that the same bitter, aging apologists are just itching for a fight every time. please get outta the new one if you can't lend your hand...

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2007 7:20 PM

lol pc's hella crash all the time.
i wouldn't illegally download as much since i got a mac because soulseek is a piece of shit for macs, but i have other means to dl music so it's all good.

I think its funny a "liberal" company used its force to shut down the apple rumor website thinksecret.com. As long as they are "cool" thats ok i guess.

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2007 3:22 AM

The righ- click button on Apple laptops doesn't exist. You can, however, buy a mouse with a right-click and it will work almost identically to a windows right-click. To access the right click function on your iBook you need to 'ctrl-click'. That will turn your only click button into the right click button. Hope that makes sense.

Posted by i'm a mac | December 21, 2007 12:33 PM

Anon. 3:22 AM: According to Mac Rumors, the guy who ran the ThinkSecret Web site is happy with the settlement and his lawyer is trash-talking Apple:

http://www.macrumors.com/2007/12/20/thinksecret-shuts-down-settles-apple-lawsuit/

http://www.macrumors.com/2007/12/20/apple-the-loser-in-thinksecret-settlement/

And it's not like Apple wanted to shut that site down because it was critical of Apple. It was because it (allegedly) disseminated Apple's trade secrets. Liberals are entitled to keep secrets, too.

And what makes you think Apple tries to pass itself off as "liberal," anyway? Methinks you actually mean anti-establishment.

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2007 2:20 PM

It's so funny... all the guys that work in my old IT department were such die hard PC users until one of their wives bought a mac cause she thought it was pretty. Now they all have macbook pros and talk shit on how they spend their whole day fixing viruses, crashes and registry errors on the PCs at work and can't wait to get home to use their Mac.
At least it keeps them in a job.

All the Windows users I've ever met that rip Macs are usually just super ignorant when it comes to any Operating System other than Windows. I've run just about every flavor of Linux, BSD, Windows, and OSX. And, OSX is by far the best OS out there.

And to Anon:

"i love how people think pcs crash all the time
its not 1995."

Obviously you haven't upgraded to Vista.

Posted by Pirate Pete | December 21, 2007 9:35 PM

Anyone that uses "Methinks" is a tool.

Posted by W. Shakespeare | December 21, 2007 9:38 PM

"Obviously you haven't upgraded to Vista."

Actually, I am typing this from a Vista laptop. Only crashed once after updating some drivers.

I have used many types of computers, from a Zilog Z80 to a military 256 processor machine, and the worst environment I have ever worked on is a Mac running OS 8. OS X is an improvement (they stole everything from Next) but it is incredibly slow compared to every other current nix window manager.

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2007 9:55 PM

Sounds like Anon 9:55pm really really needs to get out of his house and maybe get laid. I picture him looking like Louis Skolnick

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2007 7:51 AM

"OS X is an improvement (they stole everything from Next)"

"Stole"? Wasn't Jobs the CEO of NeXT and didn't Apple buy NeXT as a condition of his return to Apple? If that's your definition of stealing, I'd like to know what music you listen to that's oh, so original and not "stolen."
