New Pornographers play Maxwell's tonight(?), Apple Store

I just received usually-reliable-confirmation that tonight's (Dec. 10) Yo La Tengo Hanukkah show opener is in fact The New Pornographers who are playing the Apple Store tomorrow and the Berklee Performance Center in Boston the day after that (with Neko, but probably not Dan who has two new albums coming out).

Who's the comedian?
Posted by Greg | December 10, 2007 1:39 PM
Not true. Tonight's opener is Al Kooper. Tomorrow night is labeled "Glenn Mercer and friends".
Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2007 1:53 PM
"Tomorrow night is labeled" where is it labeled?
Which will be awesome if true too as I am going tomorrow night.

According to his website, Al Kooper is playing Tokyo tonight, so I'll doubt he'll make it time.
Posted by doigman | December 10, 2007 2:02 PM
Maybe this explains why I saw Neko on Avenue A yesterday afternoon.
Posted by chunk | December 10, 2007 2:22 PM
so, basically i got the worlds worst opener with endless boogie the other night?
Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2007 2:24 PM
Anon 2:24
Correct.
Though everything after the opener was pretty stellar. Todd Barry, a great setlist and Alex Chilton.
Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2007 2:32 PM
I am not going to say endless boogie was completely awful but they were certainly endless. I came in and saw their last song which lasted over 25 minutes. Glad I'll have another shot for a good one tomorrow.

I know this is barking up a very tall and likely fruitless tree, but anyone have 1 or 2 extras for tonight at Maxwells? Email rcgood@gmail.com if you do. I would LOVE to find a way in.

What? The information about Daft Punk opening is wrong?
Bullocks.

does anyone know what the setlist was for sunday night? i would like to see it, if anyone has it. thanks.

"Tomorrow night is labeled "Glenn Mercer and friends".
Hmmm interesting. Could this be just a tease for The Feelie? One can only dream.

glenn has a new album out and it features a few feelies but if they snuck a feelies song or two in the set, dont expect to notice it. he's pretty somber these days.
he's still talented but it aint no crazy rythyms.

Why did Matador pay for a banner ad to pimp the NP's' appearance at the Apple Store tomorrow? Does Carl demand that they publicize that much? Was he not sated when Matador sacrificed one of its executives at the (wedding) altar?
Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2007 8:36 PM
Actually, the NP's label is now Last Gang, so it's Last Gang pimping them out.
Posted by A | December 11, 2007 9:38 AM
So, after all that, did NP open?
Posted by anon | December 11, 2007 10:22 AM
they did indeed.
Posted by anon | December 11, 2007 10:27 AM
wow. does anyone have any more info on last night's show?
Posted by anon | December 11, 2007 10:30 AM
Oh snap! Anon 10:27 AM totally told Anonymous 1:53 PM! It's on!
Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2007 10:31 AM
Last night was great. NP did in fact play w/out Neko or Dan. They sounded good except that the sound guy couldn't seem to resolve the fact that every song for the first half of the set had feedback at various points.
YLT was great as usual. They were joined for their encore by the lead singer of the Flamin' Groovies.
Posted by mp77 | December 11, 2007 11:02 AM
The NPs, sans Neko (perhaps out still wandering Avenue A in search of Al Kooper), played a darn good 50-minute opening set last night, I didn't recognize most of the songs which means they most likely came from the last two albums because I only own the first two albums. They ended with a great version of ELO's "Don't Bring Me Down".
However, all of that paled in comparison to YLT's encore, when they (YLT, I don't think the NPs hung around) were joined by Roy Loney of the Flamin' Groovies for an absolutely blistering four-song set. It was amazing.
YLT's set was heavy on "And Then Nothing..." with "Everyday", "Saturday", and "You Can Have It All". Also a great set opener of Black Flag's (I think) "TV Party" renamed "Dreidel Party" for the occasion.

I'm glad that I missed seeing the overrated NP, but I am disappointed on missing out on Roy Loney of the Flamin' Groovies. They played 3 FG songs during the encore!
And so far, they haven't played "Blue Line Swinger" even once. Let's hope tonight is the night. I have seen them already play "Story of Yo La Tango" twice during this series, and I don't think my ears can handle the volume again.
Please play BLS! (and drop Sugarcube for the setlist as well)
Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2007 11:09 AM
They played Mr. Tough last night for either the 4th or 5th time this week.
Posted by chris | December 11, 2007 11:18 AM
"They played Mr. Tough last night for either the 4th or 5th time this week."
I almost agree that it is time to drop it from the set, but James hasn't been getting enough songs to sing! At least on opening night, they had horns that played on Mr. Tough. Who sang TV Party? Hanukkah (Carnival) Time was great last Tuesday.
Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2007 11:25 AM
weird, Anonymous 11:09. I have been to two of the shows so far and had hoped to see Story of Yo La Tenga, but havent seen it once. I got Pass the Hatchet twice!
Posted by anon | December 11, 2007 11:29 AM
damn i would have loved to hear pass the hatchet.
anyone have pics from last night? i need a picture of roy's hair to show my girlfriend how i will end up.
Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2007 11:42 AM
Glenn Mercer is NOT opening tonight, according to my very reliable information.
Posted by anonymous II | December 11, 2007 12:51 PM
Neko didn't play last night because she was sick. She is planning on playing the Apple Store though.
Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2007 1:00 PM
Who was the comedian/who is Peanut Butter?

"Glenn Mercer is NOT opening tonight, according to my very reliable information."
More anonymous trolling. If he is not playing, who is, Mr. Connected?
Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2007 1:15 PM
how early do you think i should get there tonight to see NP at the apple store?
Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2007 1:21 PM
Peanut Butter was Andy Blitz from Late Night w/ Conan O'Brien playing a stupid/stoned egotistical comedian who told jokes that you've more than likely heard many times, the shtick was he kept messing up the set-up an/or punchline, or he gave away the punchline early in the joke but kept telling it anyway. It was fairly funny, and he handled an ACTUAL stupid/stoned blabbermouth girl in the audience quite well.
Posted by Another Anonymous | December 11, 2007 1:55 PM
Ira's write-up about that heckling girl in their Hanukkah diary is pretty funny.
Posted by Chip Chanko | December 11, 2007 2:57 PM
I thought Andy Blitz was way funnier as Peanutbutter than when he performed as himself back in 05 (or was it 04?). Todd Barry was in the crowd last night but didn't perform. That heckler was as annoying as Ira suggests in his blog.
James pretty much took the lead on Tv Party. I agree about his vocals, time to bring back Devo's Wonderful World.
Posted by Chris | December 11, 2007 4:10 PM
I don't know who IS playing, since I'm not connected enough to know. But GM himself told me he's not playing. Apology accepted.

"Actually, the NP's label is now Last Gang, so it's Last Gang pimping them out."
Maybe in Canada. Matador's logo is on the aforementioned banner ad (which is still displayed even though the Apple Store appearance is finished) and clicking on it takes you to Matador's Web site.
"how early do you think i should get there tonight to see NP at the apple store?"
I got there at 6:55 and the line was almost to the entrance of the post office around the corner, and I figured I wasn't going to get in, so I left.

YLT must read this site judging from last night.
Before playing Mr. Tough (again), Ira commented "we played this song more than any other this week". They ended up playing the longest version they have ever played.
Toward the end they finally played BLS. So if YLT played it because of my comment above, THANK YOU! It rocked as always, though a bit short from other times I have seen them play it (13 minutes). And it wasn't the set closer, that honor went to Love Power from the Producers.
Great great show. Now I can ignore NJ again for another year.
