Crocodile Cafe

"I think it's a blow to the scene," said David Meinert, a local promoter and publicist. "Part of the side effect of the mayor's downtown development plan, which seems to have no room for live music in it. The Croc is an institution. At the same time, things change, and keeping a venue open as long as the Croc has been, through all the changes the music scene has been through, is a very difficult job. I feel for any club owner trying to make it in Seattle."

Local musician Chris Martin, a guitarist in local rock band Kinski, called the Crocodile Café "the most exciting club to play in town." [The Seattle Times] (thx Renee)

David Bazan played the last show. Nirvana played there. Beth Ditto fell there.

The DecemberistsAccording to the schedule that is still posted on the club's website "Bobby Bare Jr. and the Decemberists" were supposed to play there on January 26th - which, according to the Tractor Tavern where the show will now take place, is actually Bobby "with members" of the Decemberists. The Decemberists have played with Bobby before, and they're (all of them) scheduled to play Seattle twice just four days later - two of four West Coast shows they have scheduled. It will be the first time they play since cancelling a whole tour due to illness.

its kind of crazy that no one has been able to monetize the rise of indie bands besides possibly the bands themselves.

the croc bouncers used to pat you on your butt when you were frisked at the door.

Terrible news.

The Crocodile was the worst club I have ever played. The sound was fine, and so was the crowd, but they were so insane about the rules, that our lead singer wasn't even allowed back stage during the show (he wasn't 21).

Some might say that they were only following rules. Washington, after all, was very strict regarding underage drinking laws. Yet, NM and OR, are just as nuts, yet treated us wonderfully.

Either way, it is sad that the 21+ crowd has lost another venue. An independent venue at that.

I would just like to give my take on the place, which I hated.

i remember when i lived across the street from the crocodile. i met jmstipe there and back stage while i was trying to get up the nerve to induldge in the open door romance he allowed i was interupted by a clearly loaded stephanie (dorgan) buck as she blatantly stroked my leg with her foot and asked me questions about her prowess er my staying power. i never quite respected her after that especially when she refused to even give a wave or hello in daylight for the years that followed.

i am gonna miss the idea of the croc. it used to be a nice crunchy place to get likkerd on sundays with friends. breakfast or dinner there always held a magic. and i remember after hanging out with peter and johnnie mike i would get loaded and barrel through the stop n go back doors between the stage and bar like, no shit. no one ever stopped me cause i'd say stephanie is expecting me.

i guess shes not there anymore.

Anyone know if this rumor about Johnny Depp buying the Croc is true? Man, wouldn't that awesome?
