Viacom freelancer walkout

The protesters are still going strong, but they're not raising hell, either. A few tourists are taking pictures but most walk by. Occasionally someone peers out of the windows of the MTV studio at 1515 Broadway. The crowd boos them, and then their heads disappear... [Silicon Alley Insider]More photos @ Flickr.

doesn't look so professional and organized (surprised, its run by mtv folks)
also, i love how they print out their signs on regular paper (hopefully they used viacom's paper for this) whatever good luck. Sumner will crush you.

Wow, what a terrifically lame post. You must be a blast to hang out with.

Anon 5:32, did you expect them to use markers and glitter like TRL boppers do? sheesh.

Wow, looks like the MTV freelancers have nothing to do but post of BV. Anon 5:32... I thought you were funny and would be very entertaining company.

I freelance for Viacom and I have a 401K. Of course, its union.

This was organized by my department, and I was stoked that so many people showed up. We got some decent press coverage too. I work the same (if not more) hours than my staff counterparts, and deserve the same benefits!
No paid holidays, no 401k, no dental or life insurance, no paid vacation days - completely ridiculous.

Thank God I'm grandfathered in to get 5 paid vacation days!
But I would love to get back my 10 paid holiday days. That's 2 weeks of lost wages!!!!!

it would have been cooler if the protest was staged live on tv, you know disrupt a program maybe. People are just not as revolutionary as they used to be. I wish it was more like 1968 in Paris.

Anon 8:38, If you love 1968 in Paris so much, why don't you just move there? Geesh, some people.

I don't get the Al Qaeda 401k sign. Please explain.

maybe i'm not in-tune with the entire situation, but if freelancers had all the same benefits as staff employees, wouldn't everyone just freelance?

If you are exclusively working for Viacom and they direct all of your work, then you are an employee - not a consultant/freelancer. It doesn't matter what Viacom says. However, if you freelance for other publications as well, then you are truly a contractor and will likely never find a place that will provide benefits. Sounds like you either need a union or need to sue Viacom for misclassifying you.

Why not just find another job?

Whoa! Did you see those pics? Those kids are pissed and hell and are not going to take it anymore. They clearly have Viacom right where they want them.
