"The Virgin Megastore’s space in Manhattan’s Union Square is being offered by a real estate broker for 2009 availability. According to retail sources, New York-based Winick Realty is shopping the space and has sent out packages highlighting its features." [Billboard] (as seen on Idolator who may also be getting shopped around.)

I get sad when an independent music store closes. To Virgin I say good riddance. Their prices are ridiculously high, but I guess I see why.

Virgin Megastore is a landmark, seriously. Always amazed at the bands they stock and have always enjoyed roaming around it. It will be missed ):

The problem with Virgin megastore is:
They have clothes, that are kinda cool, but way too expensive and not cool enough for the prices.
They have tech-gadgets, but nothing special usually and never any discounts.
Their cafe closes too early, that is a turn-off for me.
But I'll kinda miss it, if it will be closes soon. What will go there? Well offices could be placed there, condos? lol... a BestBuy, though there is a circuit city?
Go Nu-Yawk

Makes me remember the classic Improv Everywhere prank that took place there on their listening stations:

I've walked by that store hundreds of times. It never even entered my mind to actually go in there.

I love shopping at this store. The prices have come down significantly, and I prefer to buy CDs so I can rip them at a higher bit rate, and have a back up. Most new CDs are under $12, and indie bands are usually under $10. Cheaper than iTunes and you are not locked into a proprietary format.
There is something about browsing the racks after a night out, before I jump on the subway. It would be a shame if it closed and just became a big Duane Reade.

I agree, I used to drop in all the time, they had some pretty good 10 dollar cd's. After this, no large cd store left in the village.

this makes me sad. when i cant go to a band's show to buy the CD i always head here to get it. is it really leaving?

my big problem with that store is they allow that hip hop artist with five teeth to pass out free copies of his cd to all the passerbyers..the guy harrases you if you don't take one..makes me avoid that block completly..

sure they have some good deals sometimes, but most of their CD's are like 16 to 18 dollars. no one is going to pay for cd's when they're that much.
they have occasional good in-store performances.

Who cares if Virgin Megastore closes? It has no valid history except having a good stock but high prices. Heck, maybe they always had a good stock because they had high prices!
Tower Records on 4th Street closing was tragic. That place was around for years, had fair pricing and an amazing jazz department that actually had a staff that knew what they were talking about. That's a resource that's now gone and is missed.
But I will say this about the Virgin Megastore. Thanks to their asinine prices they actually led me to deciding that buying tunes on Apple's iTunes store was cheaper, faster and better.
Close that place down and let anything else come in there. It will be welcome.
