Ween played Terminal 5 in NYC (twice)
Ween @ Terminal 5, NYC - Dec 1, 2007 (CRED)

by Klaus Kinski
I visited the cavernous Terminal 5 for the first time on Friday 11/30/07 to check out the first of two 'evening with' Ween shows. I've been listening to Ween for ages and have most of their records, yet I've never managed to catch a single live show. Thankfully, my first live Ween experience couldn't have been more fulfilling.
They played a solid 2 and a half hour set that was as diverse as the crowd that packed Terminal 5 to see them. From start to finish, I was dumbstruck at how good they were. One thing that truly captivated me was their ability to pull off these incredible extended jams without being too 'jammy' about it. I mean, I know these guys can play, but I never expected such powerful, cohesive jams. Dean Ween is an amazing guitarist - in both chops and taste. Drummer Claude Coleman repeatedly pulled off these fills that floored me - not only because of their technical merit, but in how tastefully and appropriately he was working them into the songs. (not bad for a guy who was nearly killed in a car wreck). Like this guy, I sort of prefer Ween 's country tunes – they tend to showcase not only their sense of humor, but also their extreme skills as musicians. Ween covered a lot of territory in 2 and a half hours (and reportedly 3 hours the second night), and I think causal fans and die hards alike all left the show pretty satisfied (even the drunk douche nozzle who felt the need to start a fight with me for no reason in the bathroom). -Klaus

I wanna hear the "drunk douche nozzle's" side of the story.

I wasn't at this show, but I hear that a lot of people were stuck outside in the very slow moving Terminal 5 line when Ween came on (at least that was the case for the Friday show. Don't know about Saturday).
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 2:55 PM
Can we also talk about how great Dave Driewitz is on the bass?
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 2:57 PM
Wow. So jealous. That's even more impressive given the astounding shittiness of Terminal 5. Might be the worst venue in Manhattan.
Posted by the management | December 3, 2007 2:59 PM
no might about it, it IS the worst venue in manhattan.
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 3:03 PM
Terminal 5 is not that bad. I kind of like it.
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 3:07 PM
Did they finally fix the coat check or was it still a 15 minute wait to check a coat?
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 3:07 PM
the line outside on saturday night was not a problem at all. friday night line to get in was completely bananas. it took us almost 45 mins to get through the line... it sped up a bit for the last 15 mins of waiting... most likely due to Ween already hitting the stage with loads of fans outside.
Terminal 5 is a complete crap venue. the balconies are useless unless you stake out a spot along the railings and the sound is horrid up there anyway. the floor has much better sound but is way overcrowded.
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 3:10 PM
got there at 7:45 - walked in the door at 8:35 after 4 songs. kinda shitty.
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 3:11 PM
Uh, yes it is that bad. Horrendous waits for everything. We waited about 45 minutes to get in, and seemingly as long to get a drink. One of the mini-bars also had a pre-bartender bartender taking orders and relaying them to the actual bartender. What is the point of that? Does the bartender not speak English? In the time it takes to relay the message she could have been pouring my drink. If they'd taken half of their huge security staff and put them behind the bars, it might have been a fun night. Also, $6 bottles of Bud and $7 drafts is more in line with the superclub this place used to be than the reasonable Bowery prices. Shitty sightlines, bad sound in the upper balcony...I can't really think of a situation in which I'd go back.
Posted by cat | December 3, 2007 3:16 PM
It's not that bad of a venue outside of the beer prices. Plus, they employ a team of midgets as security guards.
Awesome shows.
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 3:23 PM
I was there on Friday. Terminal 5 it's horrible as a venue, the line to get in was the worse I have experienced in ages.
They also had a midget security guy who was walking around the crowd trying to bust pot smokers, funny, but fucking lame.
It was my first ween show ever, they were awesome. I read complaints about the sound but I enjoyed the cavern bassy thing on it, very 70's
Claude a Little Asian Girl and me were the only non white with in the crowd
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 3:25 PM
I was there Friday and Saturday.
Ween was phenomenal both nights. As good as (if not better than) ever.
The wait to get into the venue was, unfortunately about 40 minutes on Friday. Saturday was much better, only about 15 minutes (and I was way at the back of the line).
Just like all venues of it's size, the sound at Terminal 5 is pretty bad in a few spots, but overall it's far better than average. I would even say that it sounded incredibly good where I was standing.
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 3:50 PM
"$7 drafts is more in line with the superclub this place used to be than the reasonable Bowery prices"
drafts at bowery are 6 bucks. also not reasonable.

Did thy play much of anything from their first record?
Still my favorite.

Isn't bud draft $5 at Bowery?

Friday Night's encore.... unreal, fist-pumping Rock fest. Overall amazing Ween Weekend. Terminal 5 could have been better...but I definitely had a great time.
Three cheers for hippy crack.

Awful venue. Got there at 8 on Friday, doors opened at 7 - Didn't get in until 45 minutes later.
Got one drink - the lines were ridiculous for drinks and you could only get one per wristband. Didn't really see the show - unless you're up front against the balcony, you can't see. If you're on the overcrowded floor, you could, but it's uncomfortable.
I love going to shows, but I'm boycotting this place - first MIA now Ween.. that's it for me.
Posted by Doug | December 3, 2007 4:26 PM
I will never go to Terminal 5 again. Yes, all the line comments are true. I too waited out in the fairly cold Friday night for at least 50 min, missed about 4 or 5 songs, and then upon getting in, had to watch a friend almost get into a fight with some frat boy a-hole.
To make matters worse, this was the second show I've seen at Terminal 5, and the sounds was possibly WORSE than the last time I was there. I think they spent about $300 on a few "PA head/speaker" set ups from Guitar Center and called it a day. There's no acoustic buffers whatsoever. It just sounded like Ween covered in heavy mud.
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 4:39 PM
awwwwww Doug... was it too crowded for you? Stay home next time BABY BITCH!
The show was supposed to start at 8. That's what happens when you show up late. What makes you think that you would be able to easily get a spot where you can see at a sold out GA show that you arrived at after the show was scheduled to start? Guess that's the venue's fault?
The longest I waited for a drink was 5 minutes. You have to go to a place this big with different expectations than when you go to a place the size of the Bowery Ballroom. I wasn't blown away by Terminal 5, but it was as good as any other place of it's size.
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 4:42 PM
I went Saturday. Terminal 5 is the WORST venue I have EVER heard live music. I love Ween but because of the crappy sound, nonexistent sightlines and crazy bar policies (I was on the top balcony, there was no wait for a drink, but the prices are ridiculous and there is no way around the "one drink per person" rule) this ranks as probably the worst Ween show I have seen (it was my 4th). I realized today that Cake is playing Terminal 5 when they're in town and it almost makes me not want to go. They are clearly overselling this venue, making the concert-going experience extremely frustrating and disappointing. Looking down at the crowd, I couldn't believe how many people were packed in on the floor. It looked downright dangerous. Something needs to change.
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 4:43 PM
The worst venue ever? Give me a break... what's with all the drama queens on BV? Sounds like there are just some people who have a personal beef with Bowery Presents. Terminal 5 is among the better venues in NYC.
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 4:48 PM
People should start bringing flasks into venues en masse. It might change a few things in a number of music clubs.
Posted by Christopher Howard | December 3, 2007 4:53 PM
would definitely change a few things. It would put them out of business!
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 4:58 PM
"Sounds like there are just some people who have a personal beef with Bowery Presents."?....
What does that have to do with anything? Because the sound is terrible and the venue can't get people in on time because they way oversold it, we have a problem with the promoters? You're an idiot. I have no problem with Mercury or Bowery Ballroom. In fact, they're two of my favorite venues in the City.
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 4:59 PM
The line to get in on Friday night was over 45 minutes long, and with zero crowd control, literally stretched into the West Side Highway, which is more than annoying--it's downright dangerous.
The Friday night show was obviously oversold and sightlines were non-existent. Ween raged, but god forbid a fire had broken out, everyone would have been dead.
Call me a whiner, but until Bowery Presents can convince me otherwise, they've bitten off more than they can chew with Terminal 5. Horrible venue.
Posted by dave g. | December 3, 2007 5:01 PM
Hahaha. I totally agree with 4:59! Bowery and Mercury are my 2 favs. I can even deal with Webster Hall every now and then. T5 blows.
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 5:02 PM
Sounds like there are some Bowery Presents employees on here (i'm looking at you, Anon 4:48).
I'm pretty sure Sierra Nevada (and other draft beer) is $5 at Bowery. Terminal 5 did have Toasted Lager, though. I'll give them that. But they obviously still need to hire more bartenders.
Posted by cat | December 3, 2007 5:03 PM
Terminal 5 sucks...They sell way too many tickets. The problem is that there is a lot of wasted space on the 1st and 2nd balconies. If you are not the first or second person from the railing, you can't see...As a result, everybody goes to the ground where there is severe overcrowding.
Sound is subpar also...I'd rather see a show at any other venue in the city.
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 5:05 PM
The sound was actually good on the right side of the second floor. Third floor was horrific. They need screens on the upper levels.
Beyond all the venue bullshit.
WEEN ROCKED!!!!!!!!!!! Jammy Pac, Tender Situation and You Fucked Up were my Friday highlights.
Saturday had a lot of heavy dark songs but still excellent variety.

ok never listened to ween before, my friends raved about the show-what album should i start listening to first to get into them.
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 5:24 PM
"I'd rather see a show at any other venue in the city."
you'd rather see a show at Roseland or Hammerstein Ballroom?
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 5:45 PM
Yes, Roseland or Hammerstein both blow, but are better than Terminal 5.
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 5:49 PM
yup I dont have to wait in line for 30 mins at roseland or hammerstein to get a drink
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 5:50 PM
yep...sound doesn't sound like mud at roseland or hammerstein.
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 5:56 PM
the only T5 show i've been to was Against Me! and i had absolutely no problem with the venue. I actually thought it was pretty nice
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 6:20 PM
T5 is fine if it's not sold out.
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 7:18 PM
I haven't been to a show at Terminal 5 yet and I'm wondering what it'll be like to get there from the subway, and vice versa, when it's freezing. Those of you who went: How hard was it to get a cab after the show?
Posted by Frostbite Freddie | December 3, 2007 7:57 PM
It's a long as walk from the subway. try and catch a crosstown bus. as for catching a cab, good luck. picture yourself with 3000 other folks exiting a venue at the same time that has NOTHING around it.
Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2007 8:06 PM
Cripes, I just looked at the schedules for the M31 and M57 buses and it seems that late at night, you could wait as long as 15 minutes for a bus, and that's if it's on schedule.
Google Maps says the distance from Terminal 5 to 56th St. & 7th Ave. is seven tenths of a mile. That's not too bad, unless the wind chill is as low as it is tonight.
Posted by Frostbite Freddie | December 3, 2007 9:58 PM
Lemme splain: No, no, is too long. Lemme sum up: bad sound + crap drink policy + overpriced swill + slow unprepared staff + bunk balcony layout + no matter how awesome vibe/band/music is = venue still sucks. There are many ways this place could transform into something great. Clean up the mix, first. Get rid of the side tables on the balcony - they only serve the purpose of pushing people out of sight of the show and onto the already overcrowded floor. There is an amazing amount of space in this club that is devoted to not watching the show. Oh, and move it to at least 8th avenue.
Posted by Mok | December 3, 2007 11:19 PM
I’d say it’s fine to bitch a little about missing part of the show despite having arrived after 8. We all are used to the norms of live music performances – they usually start late.
But, Ween is amazing awesomeness, so that was good.

I saw ween's sound guy, jamie landry, do sound for this group pale nimbus at annex last month for the nme magazine party and they blew me away. Jamie's doing their sound again this Friday at Luna Lounge. definitely check these guys out. They've only been performing for the past two months but they've been playing in the city every week packin places.

I was one of the people scanning ID's on Friday, and I completely agree that they had a shitty system in place. Mandatory ID check for everyone before they enter the club sucks... but people are also pretty fucking stupid about it. We yelled every four seconds at every portion of the line for people to have their ID's OUT AND READY TO BE PRESENTED, and of course 80% of people did no such thing, which confounded the process even more. Also, what the fuck is the problem with the scanners? More than half of the people going in seemed convinced that we were stealing their personal information and submitting it to the government, which is asinine. Even when I showed people what the scanner does (shows me the person's age and name), people got all pissy and made comments about OMG BIG BROTHER OMG. The paranoia is completely without merit and is exactly the sort of thing that was keeping people from getting in faster.
Posted by gt | December 4, 2007 2:44 AM
why do you need a scanner to read the age and name that is printed right in front of you on the id?! that does not make sense. the information is going through for other reasons and it is right for people to be suspicious
Posted by Anonymous | December 4, 2007 5:36 AM
I was told that they were using the scanners because it is about to become a law that they have to be used in all nightlife places in NYC. All bars will be required to keep a record of who is in the place in case another teenager is murdered at a club or something. this is all part of the "something must be done" crap from the city after last year's problems. In fact, they are pretty close to making all venues 21+ to enter. The nightlife association has recommended this policy. They sold out all of the places that aren't shitty dance clubs that already require 21+.
Posted by Anonymous | December 4, 2007 7:58 AM
First of all, the machine saves no information whatsoever. It's not being sent to anyone and no permanent record is kept on the machines. They serve the following purposes:
-Making sure peoples' ID's are legit by reading the barcode
-Displaying the person's age in plain numerals so we don't have to memorize where the DOB is on every state ID and squint looking for it... simply a timesaving procedure... or at least it would be, if people would cooperate.
The reason they're using the scanners has nothing to do with an impending mandatory law as far as I'm aware, and we've been told nothing of a sort. The only reason they started with the scanners was a matter of convenience, same reason they started scanning tickets instead of tearing stubs. But seriously, the scanner is not a complicated device, the data is not "going through" to anywhere, and I can't think of any reason to be worried about it anyway. If you think the government is going to hunt you down because you had your ID scanned at the Ween show... that's pretty ridiculous. We didn't even do anything to the guy who was selling rolls at the door.

"doesn't sound like mud at Roseland"
.......really.

it may not be dangerous to a ween fan in this situation, but the precident that it sets is highly desturbing!

I have been to hundreds of shows and I have to agree with some of the folks here that Terminal 5 was hands down the shittiest venue I have ever been to. Bands should boycott that place as much as fans. It was awful - 50 minute wait, asshole door guys, frat boys cutting the lines, and once we did get in - yeay another 15 minute wait for a shitty beer. New York has got to do better than that...Awful!
Posted by bam | December 6, 2007 11:20 AM
FYI - the band was dissing the venue hardcore backstage.
Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2007 11:32 AM
it's "the shittiest venue you have ever been to" because of "frat boys cutting the line"? Is that the venue's fault?
The lines were a little slow the first night, but not the second night.
Bunch of dramatic whiners here...
Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2007 11:43 AM
Terminal 5 is not good, it has left a bad taste in people's mouths not seen since the concert hall debut of... Webster Hall.
Has anyone looked at the schedule for MHOW? They have like 10 shows total between now and mid-March. And the debacle of opening night over there...
How did Bowery Presents lose their advantage so quickly? I'm almost rooting for Live Nation these days, since the Bowery people have so blown it.
Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2007 12:02 PM
this venue is shit. i'll never go back to this shithole. ween kicked ass. fuck terminal 5

"Terminal 5 is not good, it has left a bad taste in people's mouths not seen since the concert hall debut of... Webster Hall."
Webster Hall is one of the oldest venues in NYC (I remember going there in the '80s when it was the Ritz). Clueless or just being sarcastic?
Posted by Anonymous | December 7, 2007 11:39 AM
I think most people who comment on BV are either clueless or have a personal beef they want to anonymously pursue. Terminal 5 is actually a great place to see a show... period. You try getting 3000 people into a building in less than 45 minutes.
Posted by Anonymous | December 7, 2007 1:07 PM

don't play dumb to make your point - you know what he was referring to - the Bowery presents debut of Webster Hall, complete with brutal security and awful sound. Terminal 5 sure seems a lot more in that bad spirit than in the vein of Bowery Ballroom, which is nearly unanimously cherished.
Posted by Anonymous | December 7, 2007 1:21 PM
i like the guy defending this venue. it clearly sucks. i've been to a LOT of shows and venues in nyc and california and terminal 5 SUCKS. who's paying you to write that bullshit?
Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2007 11:10 AM
who's paying you to write that it sucks? Why don't you just not go there then? I don't think it sucks any worse than any other venue of it's size.
Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2007 1:47 PM
On the sound comments. Gotta think about more then just the venue. A band this big has there own engineer. Its all on him. Not on the venue. I saw John Bulter there and it sounded amazing. If its a good band engineer it will sound good.
Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2007 3:27 AM
hey, seeing as how ween is a fairly popular band (assuming it was sold out?), was anyone able to get tickets before the show ?
im hoping to score tickets for a show next month. yes, regardless of the venue. :)
Posted by hey | December 11, 2007 9:10 PM
I call bullshit on the guy who says the sound issues are all the sound engineer's fault.
if a room sounds like shit and has a porly designed sound system, then all a sound engineer's charms will be useless.
That's why there are jobs for people who design sound systems and architects who design music venues with acoustics in mind.
Terminal 5 is a shitty dance club that Bowery Presents arbitrarily turned into a music venue because it happens to hold the right capacity of ticket holders for their efforts to compete with Clear Channel.
