All Points West Festival, Liberty State Park, Jersey City, NJ
aka "Coachella East", Aug. 8-10, 2008

In April 2007, Ken Tesler attended the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, Calif., and met that event's producer, Paul Tollett, for the first time. They haven't announced any of the Jersey lineup yet, but Radiohead and Jack Johnson are already rumored to be playing. In the meantime, they announced the lineup for Coachella (proper). The conversation turned to Liberty State Park in Jersey City, where Tesler's Liberty Event Management company had produced boat shows, the 2006 Cheap Trick-headlined LibertyJAM concert and other events. He said that, historically, immigrants who came to Ellis Island would go to the Central Railroad of New Jersey terminal, which is still on the park's grounds, then board trains for "all points west."
"Paul looked at me and was like, 'What a perfect name for a festival,'" he said.
Tesler, who had been thinking for years about producing a major multi-day rock festival at Liberty State Park, and Tollett, who has had a similar dream of bringing a Coachella-style extravaganza to the East Coast, are now partners. On Aug. 8-10, they, working in conjunction with the New York nightclub the HighLine Ballroom, will mount the first All Points West Music & Arts Festival at Liberty State Park.
Dozens of pop and rock acts will perform on three or four stages, though the co-producers are not ready to announce the lineup. They anticipate crowds of 25,000-30,000 per day.....
.....Tesler said he and his partners had selected Aug. 8-10 as the weekend for All Points West before they knew about Vineland, and that they don't view that festival as competition, even though it's just a few hours away.
"I really think it's two separate markets," he said. "Technically it's in New Jersey, but that's really a Philly market." [NJ.com]

I'd go to that show ;)

flaming lips headlining over MBV and portishead? no way that is believable. at least i could leave before flaming lips go on.
Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2008 10:09 PM
i'd swim to that show
Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2008 10:13 PM
obviously the first post is BS.
Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2008 10:15 PM
Anon 10:09pm....obviously you've never seen The Flaming Lips.
Portishead = trip hop at best
MBV = Who knows how they're going to sound after all these years....
At least you'll have a great time with the LIPS....guaranteed!
Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2008 10:21 PM
flaming lips are just annoying.
portishead's set at ATP in december was unbelievable and i'd take my bloody valentine playing solely from "this is your bloody valentine" over anything wayne coyne could cook up.
Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2008 10:26 PM
you know how i know the first post is gay? because it does not include jack johnson
Posted by wers | January 21, 2008 10:26 PM
Oh god are we gonna now have a million posts like the first one on this thread. Idiots like that monklish guy and the other coachella dopes trying to say they are in the know about which bands are playing. It really is sort of annoying.
This should be exciting but unfortunately Liberty State Park will not have the same surroundings as Coachella but at least I will not have to travel far.
Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2008 10:39 PM
i think the first post was meant as a joke, a sort of response to all the hype that all these festivals have been attracting. unforuntately, no one here has a sense of humor.
Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2008 10:43 PM
true statement about the surroundings but hopefully the better acts(mbv, radiohead, etc.) will play minus jack johnson. now that would be a good lineup as long as he isn't there.
Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2008 10:45 PM
As long as there's not Jack Johnson, I'm down.
Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2008 10:47 PM
Actually, I'd go to that show, but if you add Underworld I'll go w/bells on!
Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2008 10:48 PM
how much will tickets be? this year coachella is close to $300.
Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2008 10:49 PM
i'd be fine with jack johnson if there were other good bands...that song that's like "it seems to me that maybe.." is pretty catchy shit.
Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2008 11:13 PM
oh man, usually to see bands I have to go out of NJ to philly or nyc but for once I'm getting two big festivals in my state on the same weekend. I'm so excited, and if MBV play I will die happy.
Posted by Ellie | January 21, 2008 11:22 PM
its to fucking hot in aug.
Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2008 11:28 PM
i am mucho excited, i've not been very hopeful about a ny area festival since the failed Field Day and Bonnaroo shows. too bad no camping at All Points West.
Posted by stad | January 22, 2008 12:05 AM
The correct URL for the festival is APWfestival.com
Posted by Spookymonster | January 22, 2008 6:58 AM
This seems like the Coachella folks are trying to muscle the Glastonbury folks out of America. I love how even music festivals have become bastions for corporate one-upmanship.
Posted by Josh | January 22, 2008 7:35 AM
so: $300 a ticket? who can afford that? I can. I'm in my late 30's and would LOVE to go to a festival. But for that money I don't want to stand for 14 hours, sweating, or soaking wet from rain. All to be packt in like sardines in a crushed tin waiting 6 hours so you are close to the stage.
I prefer to see my bands separately, with a seat, and minus the teenyboppers getting lame tattoos. Those muddy crush fests are for kids only. Guess they'll get their parents to pay.
Posted by Steph | January 22, 2008 8:57 AM
To all the haters.....Shut UP!!!
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 9:25 AM
I know I'm old, 'cause I just read Steph's comment above and completely agreed. I don't mind going to GA shows, but it's getting harder and harder to handle these large festivals.
Pathetic....isn't it?
One thing that helps ameliorate the conditions for us old folks is springing for VIP tickets (if they are available). I went to the Sasquatch Festival last year and for $500 per ticket, I had access to a separate entrance, preferred seating, catered food, a full bar, air conditioned bathrooms, etc. It was a splurge, but worth the trip.
Posted by Dan | January 22, 2008 9:32 AM
Steph,
in your late 30's have you lost your geographic bearings? The rain that would be required to create mud in Indio hasn't materialized EVER during Coachella. All the other things you don't want to do with your $300, are self inflicted not a by product of purchasing a ticket, your poor festival management skills shouldn't be a basis for panning the festival but rather the absolute SHITE line up. Get out more....
Posted by B | January 22, 2008 9:32 AM
To all the lovers....blow the dust off that brain and actually use it for once.
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 9:34 AM
Dan-
I didn't know VIP tickets would be available for this festival. Sounds like a great alternative. In the live footage of most festivals though, I have never seen seating anywhere. Just a crowded mash of dirty people. Now I am really considering going to APW.
B-
I appreciate your well-phrased response (not the typical 'YOU SUCK!'). In fact, I do get to MANY concerts - I even planned a small trip this summer to be able to see Interpol multiple times (love 'em). Northeast rain wreaks havoc. Obviously Coachella is in the desert so its a completely different situation. Now, RH as a headliner is not shite- they'd be a main reason I go (in addition to seeing them alone this spring). But Jack Johnson is a buzzkill - my 7-yr old love him though...
Now, if I can just get passed the beach balls and crowd surfing.. it is about the music, right? Ok, so maybe I am old!
Posted by Steph | January 22, 2008 9:54 AM
Stay away, grandma and grandpa; shouldn't you be having kids or be worrying about dying or something? Use your $300 to buy some stocks or something responsible, leave summer festivals to people who aren't susceptible to arthritis yet.
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 9:58 AM
There's some kind of contest going on to find unknown bands to play the festival. The contest is supposedly being held on talenttrove.com

GET OFF MY LAWN!
Posted by Lady Liberty | January 22, 2008 10:08 AM
Hey Anon 9:58.....LOL. My sciatica is acting up just reading your comment.
Seriously though, I attend on average one show each week, so I'm not completely over the hill yet. The all-day festivals are tough though.
Steph, thus far, Coachella has never offered a VIP ticket option. Sasquatch offered VIP tickets, and the 3 day Langerado Festival taking place in South Florida this March is also offering a VIP option. I'm just hoping that Coachella and APW jump on the VIP bandwagon.
Posted by Dan | January 22, 2008 10:10 AM
@Dan...yes coachella has offered VIP...as long as you have an AMEX card.
Posted by Mike | January 22, 2008 10:13 AM
The VIP bandwagon is a very bad thing

Christopher Lloyd aka Doc vs. George Carlin aka Rufus.....who was a better time-travel mentor?
"anon 10:09 - with jack johnson headlining over the verve and the breeders, anything is possible."
TRUE - Anything IS possible. Dan Deacon might still be remembered by the time the festivals roll around...Dang, I sure hope not!

first big festival on the east coast and it has the word "west" in it's name? WTF?!?!!!
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 10:30 AM
i can ride my bike there from the apt i live in now. luckily i am moving to the east vill in july. but I will still have friends in the JC apt.
i am excited no matter what.
philly scene? what is that?
hahaha
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 10:33 AM
Lollapalooza in Chicago also does the VIP thing, but it's pricey. If you know people in Chicago to stay with, it's a decent festival. Unfortunately no camping, which is the funnest part of Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Sasquatch.
Other good fests are Voodoo in New Orleans, Vegoose in Vegas, Noisepop is SF, and SXSW and ACL in Austin. So don't lose hope because Coachella dropped the ball. There is plenty of other shit out there.

Posted by cdubya | January 22, 2008 11:31 AM
It's going to take 3 strong headliners to pull me in for the 3 day pass, if not I'll just pick and choose one or two days, also this is on the same fuckin weekend as the vineland music festival, I think APW has the upperhand by far, maybe i'll split the days up 2-1
I really hope that Queens of the Stone Age, Radiohead, and maybe interpol play
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2008 12:13 PM
Hey Steph--
I realize that in your late 30s it's really hard to get the stamina for all-day concerts (poor baby). And honestly, I haven't been to any all-day events recently. But I've gone to a number of shows at BB, WH, Irving, Warsaw, Hammerstein, etc. in the last few years--also Summerstage and the Pool-- and concerts with seats will never give you the experience of jamming up front in a GA crowd. I concede you will probably encounter some bad human behavior up there, but it's the only place to experience the music properly. I've tried it both ways, and seats just don't make it. I will definitely give this festival a try if the lineup looks good (Radiohead, Spoon, Rilo, National, Portishead, Okkervil, BSS, anyone ???).
PS -- I am in my 50s. Oh, snap.
Posted by David z | January 22, 2008 12:42 PM
man i hope that's not what my late 30s has in store for me. bonnaroo and all the east coast festivals (or rather, nj festivals) that are popping up now just won't be the same if i paid for vip and sat my ass down.
hopefully the apw lineup kicks vineland's ass. although camping would be a major draw over the freakin PATH, i'd rather not camp in south jersey with philly freaks and the jersey devil.
Posted by mid 30s | January 22, 2008 1:26 PM

How can you make fun of the festival for being under a dirty Jersey sky. Does the sky suddenly change when you travel 5,000 feet across the Hudson River?

It wasn't meant literally, dumbass.

Save your ticket or receipt from the concert and for the rest of the season save $10 per guest off our sailing charters.
Take the Liberty Landing Marina Water taxi it is only $7 each way as opposed to the Concerts Waterway ferry which is $50 round trip.
Visit www.sailthehudon.com for info and directions.
Have fun and don't let them take so much of your money.
