the ET gang, Vineland, NJ, 1983 (CRED)

"We're not against having the concert, or doing things for the kids, but don't put it in a residential neighborhood," said Pete Steenland, a Hance Bridge Road resident who helped organize NARCS, in a telephone interview Tuesday. "If they wanted to drop 50,000 people in your neighborhood, you wouldn't like it, either."The article goes on to say that the final contract necessary to have the festival will be voted on "sometime before March, because that's when the promoters would like to make the announcement of what bands are playing." Show your support for the festival at a public meeting in Vineland tonight."We won't be able to leave our homes that whole weekend because of both the traffic and safety issues," added Steenland. "We have gangs here in Vineland. Are they going to come to the festival to try and compete with the people there? It's possible." [NJ.com]

Have you looked at Vineland on a map? We're talking SOUTH Jersey. Somewhat equidistant from Camden and Philly. Yeah, that crowd should be a lot of fun.
Unless this lineup absolutely blows me out of the water no way will I be making a trek down to the fucking pit of NJ.

But I assume that since the gangs are already there--the residents have a problem with violence now. So, if 50,000 outsiders show up, it is more likely that gang members will jack concert goers than poor residents, so the residents should be happy . . .

10:29 - good point. Bring it up tonight at the meeting.

It's long been an issue that gangs are entering what were supposed to be "safe" suburban neighborhoods.
I live in NJ, and I don't know why they want to have a festival here. Sure, I love this state and all, but come on- South Jersey people are some of the weirdest people you will ever meet. I'd rather they try to do the festival in PA, but I'm just happy there is a festival in the works, period.
Not all of us can cough up hundreds of dollars in airfare for SXSW.

that little army of ET's could take all those Crip and Blood cock gobblers. Gangs are GHEY!

What are the people like in Manchester, TN where Bonnaroo is ? or Indio California where Coachella is This is closer to two major cities than either of those other festivals. So I don't think its really "for" the people of south jersey, more for drawing from all states and big cities within 3 hours , which there are many
I tend to think the "gang" members will be a bit outnumbered and wont be attending, not at $150+ a pop (which tickets will likely be)

This is my hometown and while there are in fact gangs, they are nowhere near the concert site. At worst there will be a few dudes hanging out selling pot and blow. But they won't be jacking people or starting fights. The whole NARCS thing is hilarious in so many ways.

emaline, so then just drive to bonnaroo you cheap bastard
also i wouldnt be comparing these festivals to SXSW
Posted by Anonymous | January 10, 2008 12:07 PM
the people in both manchester and indio are very welcoming..im sure the people in vineland are just as nice, but this is probably a small group of about 20 people that are putting up a stink. they wont win.

South Jersey is a very scary place. They refer to the 'city' as Philly. What a joke...

people who live in the suburbs always refer to the closest city as 'the city'. whats your point?
Posted by Anonymous | January 10, 2008 12:23 PM
Whats wrong with these people. Arent they american? Good americans should be setting up hotdog/lemonade/pot stands or renting their gardens for parking. Clever locals make bank at this stuff. If its going to be that bad, go to 'the city' for the weekend.

Philly's more of an urban environment than The sprawling Disney/Starbucks/yuppie condo expanses of New York. What a joke. Much higher violent crime rates/gang activity per capita than NYC. Just saying.

Check out the comment thread on this local paper. Looks like there are some sane people in the area.

awwww, waaaah, how do you think I felt when I was living in Philly during Live 8...or anyone in Manchester, TN every year, or in indio, CA
if you don't wanna go, get out of town for a few days or hole up with a bottle of jack and a bag of weed...your choice...but quit whining and let the magic of commerce and industry happen for your little asshole of a town...I'm sure it could use it.

I'm not saying Vineland will in any way be comparable to SXSW, but it would be nice to have something close by...
Cheap? Why, yes I am, I'm a college student :-)

idk anything about this vineland place, they should just have it in north jersey.

"Somewhat equidistant from Camden and Philly."
Camden is just across the river from Philly, so every point on the fucking globe is somewhat equidistant from the two.

do we even know who is playing at this festival yet?

here's the most fucking hilarious part of the mess: there's a major concert venue in camden called the tweeter center some of you may have heard of. they don't even have problems at shows there and it's on the waterfront fairly close to some seriously fucked up neighborhoods to the north and south. there's also shows all over philly. as far as more mainstream venues in areas some people aren't comfortable in, like parts of north philly, one good example of a popular club up there is the northstar. the worst thing i've ever heard of at either of these places is somebody passing out tripping balls and another guy getting his jaw broken walking back to his car cause he wasn't black enough for some reverse racist piece of shit's taste. both these things are equally likely to happen anywhere else your average american can afford to live. if gangs get involved in a festival down here it will be to sell dumb fucks drugs at inflated street prices. don't worry you cnn watching christian faggots, ok. this is age old american small town bullshit where conservative locals drum up scare tactic fallacies to support points they're not educated on. they're probly scared that if they have an annual festival there will be a headshop on main street next year. the fact is they should sell parking on their law like my man said and get their piece if they want it or take a fucking trip to the poconos or something if crowds scare them that much. i for one am not interested in some fratboy bullshit of a festival, like most festivals are since you have to be mainstream/commercial/lame as hell to book the acts you see at these kind of things and pay out the ass for admission. why can't americans stop fucking dry humping corporate music and then we might have some rad festivals like the euros with atp and such. you guys want to debate a fucking festival go check out the philly international noise conference coming up. you'll never listen to jack johnson again, i hope. one last thought here on the narcs being retarded-if they had a successful festival in town they'd probly stand to gain property value since exposure is the only way that happens. i live in collingswood and the fascist local government is taxing old school residents out of town to bring in new richer yuppies. a festival could get this to go down without the advert money coming out of the town's pocket. that's what blows my mind about bumblefuck towns not wanting to grant festival permits. it just seems like everyone involved in the this situation is a smacked ass. no wonder woodstock (the original) was the last good thing to happen in the northeast. the modern world fucking sucks dick because people are so full of shit anything that's good gets cannibalized unless it stays well off the radar. have fun at boneroo

I won't get into all the inter-regional (or inter-city) arguing here, but I'll just say that Vineland should be a pretty good location for the music festival. It's centrally located (roughly between Philly and Atlantic City, people), has the space, and is just rural enough to allow a Woodstock/Bonnaroo feel. As for "gang" problems, any of those would likely be imports from out of the area; however, as one person mentioned, the cost of the festival (around $150?) likely will keep away any but serious festival-goers.

To clairpetrol - can't sell lemonade without permits, which by the way - only 10% of them will be available to anyone other than the concert promoter.
To hoodrat - better take 8th grade english and grammar class over. Your grammar, run-on sentences, improper punctuation only exemplify your ignorance. Additionally, Tweeter DOES have problems. However, this would be a better suited venue for this festival since Tweeter already has facilities for parking, restrooms, security, etc.
Bobby the rookie - to better quantify the opposition to the festival site (we are not opposed to the festival itself, just the location) there were over 150 local residents present at a recent meeting to oppose this. This in spite of the fact that all the direction signs to the meeting location were either destroyed or stolen by supporters of the festival. Theft is WRONG. Property vandalism is WRONG. If that is the mentality of the people in favor of this event, would you want them in your back yard?

Festival was originally to be held in Fairmount Park, PA. Environmental impact study de-railed this plan.
If Philly doesn't want it, why should Vineland?

Vineland Music Festival cancelled. Sorry to thos who wanted it.
Why not pony up and head out to a real festival - try burning man.....

Hey Anonymoooooose,
DONT ATTEND! PLEASE DONT GO! I assume you're an American, and with that, you have a freedom of choice. If you dump on "the f*cking pit of South Jersey", and wouldn't allow yourself to come down, unless "the lineup absolutely blows me out of the water" ,then please stay home. I also assume that when you write "making a trek down" that you're obviously a New Yawker, from North Jersey,or from New England somewhere. Maybe PA. Those northeastern biases always get in the way of judging what places outside of you're little insular bubble are really like. Try getting out once in a while. I, as many others do, highly recommend it. SJ happens to be on one of the nicest places to live, raise a family, visit, and put on a killer festy on the entire eastern seaboard. Please do us all a favor, get your tix now, and attend your local Shakespeare in the Park festival. We'll have fun with the 50,000 other music, art, and education fans at our festival. One less Anonymous Moose is good with us. One extra tic available for kind people. "Down here" we do it for the kids...not for ourselves. With you being a northerner and all, I guess you really wouldn't understand that...yet. Later Moose.
